Glad to see many quotes from Maggie Helwig. She and the volunteers at St Stephens in Toronto have stepped in where the city has otherwise abandoned people.

Canada’s Office of the Federal Housing Advocate has stated homeless encampments in Canada are a human rights crisis, and has called for a human rights centered approach that:

  1. Stops using police to harass homeless
  2. Invests in short and long term housing
  3. Ensures meaningful participation of encampment residents in decisions that affect them
  4. Recognizes distinct rights of Indigenous peoples
  5. Provides basic services to encampments (water, electricity, etc)

The pandemic is like moving to a new country:

The article reminds me of how some thrive in a new country while others pine.

Those who despair miss the life they used to have. The childhood friends, familiar food, ease of speech, etc.

Those who thrive build new social networks, embrace new activities, new foods. They may miss things about the old country, but don’t pine for the day they’ll return.

Maybe a lesson for how to thrive together in the pandemic.

I've strenuously avoided trying to give advice on protecting yourself from outside of rock-solid NPIs like masks, distance, decreased time in crowds, etc. That said, I've now seen enough preliminary studies to begin using an oral probiotic, BLIS K12. If you're lactose intolerant, you may not tolerate it. But, this throat probiotic is easily obtainable and not expensive, so I'm using it daily. See the links in my next post for the research! (1/2)

@EllieK @augieray Looking online at Canadian sites, the gum seems to sell for about $1/stick, and the tablets for about $0.50/tablet.

Fascinating to see that it’s marketed as a tool against bad breath and cavities.

I’ll probably add it to my arsenal, for higher risk situations. Like when I or a family member are unwell, or going to doctor/dentist.

What’s different about your life now, compared to pre pandemic?

What’s different physically?

What’s different about how you view yourself and those around you?

Do you feel closer to friends and family or more distant?

Are there things you expected to change but didn’t?

Living in fear vs having the tools:

ER Doc reflects after CDC removes 5 day isolation guidance:

  • "Covid is no longer so different from the seasonal flu and a host of other respiratory viruses, an inconvenience for most of us but a dangerous and potentially mortal threat for some."
  • "We have the knowledge and simple tools needed to protect each other."

She doesn't name the tools, other than wearing a mask when sick.

I love backcountry camping. But that means taking precautions like:

  • Wearing long pants
  • Wearing sunblock & sun hat
  • Purifying my water
  • Never storing food in my tent.

When people talk about not living in fear from Covid, I imagine them frolicking naked in the woods, gulping beaver water, and storing bacon in their tents.

At one point does not living in fear become actively chasing sickness?

We can still ride the bus together, even if we’re getting off at different stops!

I’ve seen this before on housing advocacy, and now seeing some of the same w.r.t. genocide in Gaza.

We may not agree 100% on all the underlying causes, and the ultimate solution.

That doesn’t matter right now.

First step in Gaza is to stop the killing. Whether we agree on the second step is less relevant. Let alone steps 5 or 6..

In the most popular tuning system today, each of the fifths is slightly flat - 1/12 of a comma flat, to be precise. That's why you see -1/12 on each arrow in the circle here.

That's not so bad. What's bad is that each major third is 2/3 of a comma sharp! That's why you see 2/3 on the arrows in the star inside the circle.

There's no way to get everything perfect. But different tuning systems handle this problem differently. I've just figured out a new way of drawing tuning systems, to show this.

Next, check out one of the oldest systems: Pythagorean tuning!

Germans learned nothing beyond how to manufacture and promote a semblance of reconciliation in which Jews are a mere transference object through which Germans may be absolved of the crimes of Nazism and the . When we no longer function as objects that Germans can transfer their responsibility for genocide onto — when we no longer serve to act as an insurance policy on their responsibility for crimes of ethnic cleansing, genocide, and the commercial war economy of the imperial core — then suddenly Germans become the victims of antisemitism visited upon the German people by the Jews.

It should give pause to those of us living in settler colonial states, such as Canada, US, Australia and New Zealand as to what level of violence was required to remove the Indigenous inhabitants.

So that the ones that remained were relegated to the least productive areas.

@TCatInReality @indigenous_commentator FWIW, I think the key is for white people to learn that the harms of systemic racism outweigh the benefits. The myth of welfare queens to keep benefits low. Crappy underfunded public schools. Poor labour protections, lack of sick leave, poor maternity benefits, poor healthcare benefits. Lack of unions.

Holding onto white privilege in such a system is like being happy you have stale bread instead of moldy bread. Better than it could be, but not good.

What even is "rock"? And how is it different from "R&B"?

I ask these questions because, every time an R&B artist is nominated to the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame, someone says they don't belong there.

However, I don’t think there’s much of a difference – if any at all. In the 50s-70s, most of the major rock acts described their music as “R&B”. For example, The Who famously described themselves as “maximum R&B”.

What changed is that, as time went on, “rock” became codified as “white music”, while “R&B” became codified as “black music”. And black R&B acts that were once described as “rock” were retroactively described as “R&B”. For example, “Queen of Rock n’ Roll” Tina Turner isn’t even regarded as a rock artist nowadays, even though she was a pioneer. Same deal with Aretha Franklin. Yes, she’s soul – but back in the 60s, people saw soul music as a subgenre of rock, because it was.

Nevertheless, if we get to what rock n’ roll is, at its core, it’s blues with a little extra rhythm. Hence “rhythm & blues” or “R&B”.

If Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin are in the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame, there’s no reason Mary J. Blige, Cher, and Mariah Carey shouldn’t also be in it.

I can't get hold of any sauerkraut juice near me, so I'm back to my usual method of making rejuvelac to be the ferment for my cheeses.
