@dansup I get that direct migration to others Fediverse softwares is still not possible, but I guess at least Mastodon can be used as a bridge, so one could move followers from Pixelfed to, say, Misskey in two moves.
Is it right?

È un discorso non facile. Mastodon, o meglio il Fediverso, è una rete di spazi collettiva. Siccome finora le aziende hanno privatizzato con successo gli spazi per le comunità online, ora fermenta la volontà di riappropriarci di questi spazi, e fin qua tutto bello.

Però, soprattutto i cosiddetti tech savvy, sembrano dimenticare che questi spazi di cui parliamo hanno la sola funzione di accogliere delle comunità, non dei singoli. Cioè: noi non usiamo gli spazi in quanto tali, ma in quanto luoghi in cui è possibile relazionarci con persone che in qualche modo ci interessano o ci arricchiscono. Noi che parliamo abbiamo trovato nel Fediverso una comunità di persone che condividono una serie di valori, legati al software libero, spesso al rifiuto del capitalismo e altre cose, quindi a noi sembra già uno spazio funzionale

Ma l’architettura del Fediverso, che lo rende libero e sicuramente una realtà meravigliosa, non è una caratteristica rilevante per tuttə.
Anzi, per alcune comunità rappresenta una grande pecca che bloccherà il loro ingresso nel Fediverso fintanto che alcune relative problematiche non verranno risolte. Se mai lo saranno.

Questo pippone è solo per dire: ci sono tanti modi in cui la natura del Fediverso viene spiegata o trasmessa “all’esterno”, per esempio joinfediverse.net riesce a farlo in un modo relativamente intuitivo. Ma ho l’impressione che non sia sufficiente. Non finché non saremo in grado di accogliere specifiche comunità che sicuramente trarrebbero beneficio dallo spostarsi qui se solo riuscissero a trovare uno spazio adatto.
@kenobit secondo me sta facendo un bel lavoro in questo senso, ma c’è da dire che le istanze che mantiene non sono che una parte delle sue attività culturali, ed è anche lì che si costruisce una comunità.

Io un parere ce l’ho, ci starei facendo anche una tesi ma se ora è in alto mare: per me il fatto che il Fediverso sia modulare, lo rende perfetto per insegnare alle persone a essere partecipi del web. Secondo me è perfettamente possibile che in una o in un qualche contesto extra scolastico si creino delle istanze dedicate agli studenti, dove abbiano la possibilità di creare e gestire uno spazio tutto loro libero al 100%. E vista la verità di software esistenti per il Fediverso immagino che ci siano millemila modi in cui comunità autogestite come queste possano trovare effettivamente utili questi spazi. È solo un’idea però

Puoi benissimo usare Vernissage, un’app nata per gli account Pixelfed che permette di vedere le foto a tutto schermo senza distrazioni, ma con un account Mastodon o Firefish. In questo modo vedresti la solita TL come fosse una TL Pixelfed, solo grazie all’app

Be aware that this option may not be available depending of the version of Pixelfed installed on your instance

So I gave up on the whole idea. This is not a marketing platform.

It’s incredible how weird this sounds.
I say incredible because the actual meaning of that is:
“A place where people gather to make community, share ideas, have fun and feel safe, is not a place to sell stuff”

AND THAT IS SO OBVIOUS

Once we accept that internet is not a virtual place but a way to experience reality, is so freaking obvious that is not ok to actively try to distract people, to lie to them, to impose a message as a way to sell something in a community place.

Just imagine that happening in a public space. Oh, we surely have ads on the streets (which in fact are
often intrinsically inappropriate), but no one would accept conversations to be literally interrupted and distracted by random ads popping out.
The fact that we are now used to experience that daily on the internet is frankly worrying

However I suppose that might be due to lack of imagination, caused by a kind of “laziness”
In a context in which federated networks are the main way people create communities online, only those realities capable to add value to those communities and maintain a healthy relationship with them are able to build a reputation.
Maybe the ones unable to so are the ones who shouldn’t have started promoting themselves in the first place. Or at least, not in the invasive way every single brand tries to promote itself nowadays.

For example, I suppose some instances could in the future provide the same kind of community space that LinkedIn et simila have created: a network of sellers and stakeholders that could be actually useful and meaningful. And it could work at many levels.

I think it could be, potentially, a better way for promoters to connect to communities, since they will need to state their role and their missions much more clearly, as a way to reach the right audience. In this way, brands selling a products could make their presence online very differently from, say, agencies promoting social services for communities

Just for record, as a graphic designer myself, I have noted multiple times how very different brands and agencies try to get in relation with people online using for sure different expressions, but the same methods, so for me, a user, they all just appear to work really hard to make me a buyer, more than a person.
I never had this feeling when finding promoting posts in the Fediverse, that’s 100% sure

What if Elon Musk is actually in mission to destroy capitalism by impersonating the dumbest millionaire possible? After all he destroyed Twitter but boosted the Fediverse.
The take about Wikipedia could just be a way to boost its fundraising.
Tesla cars being so poor made could be a way to show how bad cars are.

Back to the topic, the peak of the I-love-this-place vibe was the moment I switched instances, landing to a much smaller one, and instantly receiving response by the admin when I couldn’t figure out why migration didn’t worked properly.

He also makes announces like “guys I’m turning off the server for 10 minutes”. I love this
