#TIL about #IPFS shortcomings in an interesting article by fiatjaf. I also encountered its massive slowness, while trying to to download archived files last year. This critique goes into a number of interesting details beyond that: #P2P https://njump.me/naddr1qqyxgdfsxvck2dtzqyghwumn8ghj7enfv96x5ctx9e3k7mgzyqalp33lewf5vdq847t6te0wvnags0gs0mu72kz8938tn24wlfze6qcyqqq823c8y87ll

This is a machine for network protocols. Initially in pursuit of a social forum focused on link sharing.
as and free projects alike rush to implement some RFC adding only 'but on the web'. I aim to define a modular protocol server which can support an arbitrary number of network protocols as a network daemon. Our POC in this endeavour will be to build an -like protocol daemon which gateways to storage. The content held in this system can be consumed by arbitrary clients; a web application presenting -like services would be just one of many potential clients, although it is likely that Gnus for Emacs will be the first one.

As a fun little experiment, @damon and I worked together to get a instance up and running that stores media on ! It was an interesting learning experience.

I don’t think we’re ready to announce anything yet, as this was in service of another project in development. But, there’s an increasing number of ways to host content on an IPFS node service, and tie it back to platforms like Mastodon using an S3-compatible API for Object Storage and some proxying.

This is all pretty rudimentary, but the big-brain realization is that a more robust version could be done by pairing Minio to s3x if we wanted to self-host an IPFS node with those specific features.

I expect more of this, not just re #IPFS but as #p2p systems are happening, storage models will change for the better. #Autonomi is the project I'm most familiar with and they have already talked about this and have partners ready to upload their data. They are not yet revealed, but I wouldn't be surprised if replacing AWS was in there.

I'm working on a demo myself in the area of web publishing and browsing, and am very excited about this whole area, so I wish you luck.

@deadsuperhero I don't get why you see so "few narrow applications". IPFS storage could be used to store the media (videos, sounds). We then could hope that every instance where someone follow you will get the toot and store the attachments in their local IPFS node. So, the more popular your content become, the more it is available, à la BitTorrent. You then can selfhost on your instance and no longer need costly CDN, S3. Benefits seems obvious to me but I may miss something 🤔

dillo, the perfect web browser for the #smolweb has just released a new version (9 years after the previous one)

Interesting new features:

  • floating HTML elements
  • support for OpenSSL, LibreSSL and mbed TLS for HTTPS
  • and more css rules support

Detailed change log:

Did you know that you don't need to commit to an entire @agregore browser to make use of it's tech? If you already have installed you can run agregore-compatible modules from your cli over any protocol supported by the browser. (e.g. or )

npx agregore run hyper://blog.mauve.moe/example.js

With this you can share code between applications and command line utilities.

@privacyguides would you be interested in also publishing on Autonomi, a privacy focussed p2p network?

I'm putting together demos but have not yet thought about 'real' websites so your toot got my attention.

It would be great to have existing sites there, and ones with a privacy focus would be perfect.

Launch is set for October so there's time to get things together.

InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) is a peer-to-peer (P2P) network and protocol for storing and sharing files via the internet.

IPFS is an alternative to the HTTP protocol.

HTTP maps data by where it is stored.
IPFS maps data by the content.

IPFS users ask for a file and the system locates and delivers the closest copy.

A cryptographic hash function verifies data integrity.

Specifically, as evolves to be run as more of a commons network

Very interesting thanks. I've been following/helping #SafeNetwork and was wondering about connecting with #IPFS (maybe as a way to host content permanently) so started following the hashtag today and reading up. But it's such a big project!

Your blog is very interesting, and seems similar to ideas for compute on SN. I'll be following your work. Good luck.
@everywherecomputer

boris,

@happyborg thanks!

Happy to talk more about IPFS. It’s actually not about permanent storage, but rather permanent, immutable identifiers - content addresses - that point to self verifying data.

From my POV — permanent, global content addresses are a great starting point to build lots of things on, and collaborating on a commons network is part of that.

Ok so I think the IPFS is probably the most coolest and futuristic decentralized server project I have ever seen by far, huge game changer. The fact that you can host an entire HTML site free of charge is insanity to me. Think about the possibilities hosting your own indie musics, comics, arts, stories and games. It may not replace social media but it's great for creating personal website :BlobhajBlanketBlue:.

TechpriestBaunach,

@trinityparadox
The concept is really cool, but give it a try, it's not terribly smooth unless you're using a high power machine on a really fast connection. Hope it develops into something amazing, but it's got some rough spots at the moment.

happyborg,
@happyborg@fosstodon.org avatar

@TechpriestBaunach @trinityparadox
Also keep an eye out for #SafeNetwork which is coming together. Initially for perpetual data storage but websites will follow. Truly automous #p2p, so no gatekeepers, servers etc.

Uses content addressing like #IPFS but acts like one big server, so no need for you or any particular device to be online for your data to remain secure and accessible from anywhere.

I think 2024 is already a very exciting year for p2p networks. Can't wait for the apps.

I’ve been aware of this collaboration for years, but it is so cool that they are announcing successful experiments. The Interplanetary File System is no longer just a clever name. It can be used to send data to nodes on satellites in space. Next, the moon!
