Currently crossing Germany after a weekend in Vienna and Warsaw 🚄 This would have been impossible without this blog: https://www.seat61.com/ (thanks @jurie!) Which makes me wonder how Europe can do its energy transition. It has rails everywhere, but the trains are unreliable, tickets are ten times more expensive than flights, and the best way to know about a route is a British blog from the 2000s 😑

Just booked a trip to London (from Berlin). BA cost me 250€ return. Sleeper train would have cost 850€. That's just too much, even in return for doing my bit towards saving the planet :(

Taking the SJ from Stockholm to Berlin tonight. The train left on time at 17:34, but we are still in Södertälje Syd because of an electrical failure between here and Gnesta. There is no information on when the train can proceed. Have a cabin, hoping to wake up in Germany. Always exciting to !

I just booked my tickets to !

I'm going to and as usual (save for some floating), by a leisurely 3-night ferry and trip with and .

I'll have about 10 hours to spend in and 12 in , twice. Let me know if you want to meet there or to share ferry/train compartments.

The which owns the company is raising 3 M€ in capital to fund the service from to and .

I bought a few shares because their success would help me . (Also, how cool is it to own a [lease, fraction of]?)

It's a high risk investment. No profits expected for years with favourable track prices. No membership/voting rights under 26 k€ invested. Check bylaws etc. in "legal" and "community" tabs.

It was a huge mistake by Deutsche Bahn to discontinue the Berlin-Paris night train...so it's a wonderful turn of events that ÖBB has led the push to start the connection again.

Will try it out soon.

Again night trains are descibed in an article in the press (Stern) as “Einsteigen, einschlafen, aufwachen, aussteigen”. (“Board, sleep, wake up, disembark”) That is not how night trains work except in lucky cases where the journey is precisely so long that you board at bedtime and arrive around 7–9 or so in the morning. For longer journeys you either are awake for several hours before a reasonable bedtime, or you arrive around noon or even later. And that is how it has always been.

are there any good websites to travel accross Europe, taking into account night trains ? I plan to travel from Bruxelles to København in June, but I can't find much.... (e.g. the one below suggests a travel mainly during the night, but with 5 transfers.. during the night !). I mean night train where we sleep...

Can you travel from to by ?

AVE Seville-Madrid at 6:40 AM
Train has become the default way of travelling this route.

-Barcelona. 3 operators serve this line (, , )

-Paris, high-speed service, 7 hours-trip.

Reaching at 21:18. But the last Paris-Brussels leaves at 21:15... from another station.

Potentially a 15-hour trip, bad connections force you to spend the night en route. No

"The night train revolution has been hailed as an alternative to airplanes. Here’s how that’s going"

I absolutely love the night train, going to sleep in one city, waking in another.

I hope this effort succeeds.

THREE is the magic number (to replace a plane trip with a train trip).
✈ 1️⃣ 📛
🚅 3️⃣ 🔝

A 3h train trip competes with a 1h plane trip (plus going to/from the airport, security screening)

Add to that working on the train in a comfortable seat: trains can compete in 5-h trips.

What about an 8h high-speed service? Then better a night train.

Europe needs more NIGHT TRAINS

We tried another European : the 🇫🇷 Intercité de Nuit, from Paris to Latour de Carol in the Pyrenees. From there, Catalan 'Rodalies' depart for Barcelona. The amazing Man in Seat 61 has further details for this route: https://www.seat61.com/trains-and-routes/paris-to-barcelona-by-sleeper-train.htm

The four of us had a 4-person compartment (=1st class): OK beds, handy sleeping bag, wifi and power sockets on board. Comfort therefore fine, were it not for the announcements, and the lack of coffee....
So a 7/10
