Today's #homecooked lunch was steamed #okra & fried garlic salt n pepper #prawns. I dipped okra in fermented bean curd sauce(not pictured). Ate both of these dishes with small bowl of steamed jasmine rice(not pictured).
New way to have #okra for me (don't know what it's called)
Okra dumplings - nice crisp but thin shell with soft chopped up okra inside, not too slimy with minimal binder in a slightly (corn/potato starch) thickened dashi. Like takoyaki (or Akashiyaki really) except okra.
Quite delightful really! #Japan#Food
So, @anianimalsmoe has me thinking about my visits to Hokkaido, Japan in the past. One thing I LOVE about Hokkaido is the amazing food - they are super well known for farming and dairy. Hokkaido ice cream, great farm grown vegetables etc.
On one visit we found this super tiny hole in the wall restaurant that had amazing food! 🥘 I think this was from our visit to the city of Sapporo.
Here’s a photo of what I had, and the description from the menu - prices were great, this was about 5 bucks. The vegetables in the bowl had a slimy consistency in common : Natto, I forget the name of the slimy white radish, okra, etc.
I loved the menu description :
“Bowl of sticky and slimy food” 🍲
Maybe I’ll post up some other pics and stories from Hokkaido - I’ve been there in winter when it’s just covered in snow as well as in summer. Very beautiful and amazing part of Japan.
Okra Stew is a beautiful book about food, family, ancestors and Gullah Geechee culture.
Okra Stew is a wonderful read. I love how the author added the recipe at the end of the book, as well as information about the Gullah Geechee people.
My favorite way to eat okra. Lightly fried, simmered until tender with a veggie broth and then at the last 2 minutes fry a couple of cloves of smashed garlic add, stir and squeeze 1/2 lemon for brightness. #Vegan#VeganFood#Okra#WhatsForDinner
@Beckysay That looks good, and I'll to try it that way. I've always cooked it the way my grandmother did: thinner slices (1/4-1/2 inch), breaded with cornmeal, and fried. But that looks very tasty.
Read that #Okra#plants sometimes do not #flower, so it was pretty cool to see the ones I planted on the back porch bearing some. Seems they close when there’s no sunlight. Quite a resilient plant as they were tiny and have survived the heavy rains this monsoon
