I'm writing a longer (as it seems) article on the lock-in effect of solutions like that are using open formats like for storage. The file format is not the only thing that might lock you in.

I did already start with a list of arguments but also want to collect your ideas so that I don't forget a good argument.

Please, no emotions, just facts and objective arguments.

Reply here in this thread and I'll collect ideas from it. 🙇

Every year or so, I try using #obsidian for #notetaking and such, but after a day, I always come back to #orgmode . There are just way too many extras you get being in #emacs #evil and org mode.

@stdevel machte mit @fabrik42 @knoppi und mir eine spannende #FocusOnLinux #Podcast Episode zu #Emacs und #Orgmode.

Auch der #vim kam durchaus öfters vor.

Wenn du noch nicht viel über die Themen weißt oder noch unschlüssig bist, solltest du dir das mal anhören - gibt einen guten Überblick über diese ziemlich ausgereiften Powertools.

Looking forward to setting up my used with next week. Looking for recos for easy syncing, mainly for my and stuff. What have you used that you could recommend? I do have GDrive working well on my Windows machines, so could go that route,, though not familiar with how to do that on linux. Thanks!

Today I evaluated #logseq for a couple of hours.

I really have to say that this is a really good tool once you switch from the #markdown default setting to the much better #orgmode syntax. 😉

I'll migrate the #Joplin data from my previous testrun over to logseq and go with that for the moment.

Don't worry, I'll probably never leave my Org setup. It's for another person's management and knowledge base where #Emacs was no option, unfortunately.

Do your emailing in org-mode like @robhicks https://youtu.be/RlZsCKN6cqc

My flow is a bit more org centric than email centric, but still a good example.

"Did I make the right choice by using Emacs and Org mode instead of something else? With the book in my hand, I can say yes." → https://arunmani.in/articles/publishing-book-emacs/

As a small addition: supports #+import statements so you can merge multiple documents into one cleanly.

In my "play time" with as an user I haven't felt like I trust this app for many reasons. One is that I have installed too many plugins and now it’s overly complicated/bloated - I don't even want to open it. Time to dumb it back down and if it still doesn't stick then keep using . The only reason I've been testing it out is a desire for a better iOS experience with my notes.

Good news and bad news for users if :

They're working on a DB version in parallel that will provide better scalability, performance and realtime (). They'll charge for RTC.

Unfortunately, this seems to be the end for markup as they are implementing only now and a conversion feature later on. 😞

Therefore, logseq is not an option for me any more and I'll need to think about a migration strategy for my wife.

If you're using with encryption, you need to read https://irreal.org/blog/?p=11827 by about the current issue with 2.4.1.

I noticed the bug myself already in . 😔

In this case, it's good to have still a Debian machine not running the latest versions.

Each time I want to improve my / setup, I'm hitting such a complexity wall that I always start rethinking that choice… Org mode is the best thing that happened to my notes and todos capture, but emacs is the most complex software I've run in my life… And loosing so much time for small things (and often not succeeding) is making it less and less worth it for me… And that makes me sad :/

honest review

🟢 with AGPL license (in theory)
🔴 In reality it depends on a closed source module responsible for sync, dubious legality and misleading
🟡 Developed almost privately by a Venture Capitals funded company but accepting small contributions on GitHub and donations on OpenCollective
🟢 Store notes in (or in less supported ) locally
🟡 Forces indented lists in .md files and it doesn’t support normal paragraphs at all
🟡 Introduces syntax that breaks Markdown in a very bad way instead of using code blocks where possible (in Advanced Queries?)
🟡 Based on Electron, NodeJS and NPM
🟡 UI and business logic mixed together, it forces you to always run the whole UI, including for sync
🟢 Available for Linux on FlatHub (unofficially)
🔴 AppImage is the only officially supported way to install on Linux
🟡 No official reproducible builds but unofficial Flatpak ones are reproducible
🟡 Not in F-droid (and the closed source sync feature wouldn’t be allowed there anyway), you have to grab their APK manually or automatically
🟢 Supports Wayland but not by default
🟢 Custom CSS
🟡 Fixed UI, no tabs, no split view
🟡 Multi-window means multiple conflicting whole instances
🟢 Plugins platform
🔴 Plugins marketplace based on GitHub
🟡 Poor integration of plugins especially from UI/UX PoV
🟢 Very interesting concept of PDF annotations
🟡 PDF annotations not stored in the .pdf as standard annotations
🟡 PDF annotations stored in their own .md files with odd names
🟢 LaTeX formulas support
🟡 No native PDF export and in general problematic
🟡 Too many menus, command palettes and other redundant UI elements
🟢 Queries with simple syntax and UI
🟡 Advanced Queries are too often needed
🟢 Datalog query language in Advanced Queries
🟡 Very broken aliases feature
🟡 Inconsistent requirements of capitalize, lowercase etc in query syntax and elsewhere that even break some functionalities
🟢 Macros
🟡 Macros don’t work with most syntax, including Advanced Queries
🟢 Supports HTML and Hiccup syntax
🟢 Supports embedding Web pages using iframes
🟢 Sync is e2e encrypted
🔴 The code for e2e encryption can’t be audited because it is closed source
🟡 Tons of functionalities must be configured by editing a EDN file that it is very easy to break
🟢 Forum based on Discourse
🔴 Use (and abuse) of Discord, even release announcements are made there
🟡 Some Matrix bridges

Concept: 8/10
Execution: 5/10

I've seen the hype and warned the users of long-term lock-in effects. Then OneNote failed and people lost (parts of) their data.

I've seen the hype and it happened again.

Now, I see the hype. (At least the file format is an open one.)

🤷

If you want to spare yourself some effort, think of starting with a solution with no lock-in: https://karl-voit.at/orgmode/

Working on at mentions for so you can @ a headline with autocomplete to add a link.

This is very similar to how Notion provides inline linking which I quite like.

I can't figure out how to customize the corfu completion overlay to only show the headline text rather than the org link brackets, ID, and all.

Any ideas?

One Big Text File Sure Sounds like OrgMode
Reading through Ellane's look at One Big Text File it seems to me that most of her issues could be solved with OrgMode. You can resurface notes on a set schedule with the Agenda feature. Events are simply headings with dates, and tasks get TODO added to the front of a heading.

OrgMode is easy for taking lots of notes under a heading

Bibliography in Emacs.

  1. I found a Zotero guix package: https://github.com/guix-science/guix-science/pull/27/files

  2. @goku12 mentioned https://github.com/mpedramfar/zotra emacs package, which can use zotero translators without zotero client itself!

  3. There is org-capture-ref package. https://github.com/yantar92/org-capture-ref, which is similiar to zotra, but more ad-hoc.

  4. It's seems that a good solution will be to package zotra and translation-server and setup org-protocol handler for capturing bib entries from browser.

Today I spontaneously went on the empty stage on , plugged in my laptop & started to silently demo to the surrounding people in full-screen so that people were not able to realize which tool I'm using.

I demoed the syntax (lists, tables, ...), spreadsheet functions, export to PDF & docx, task headings, bi-directional links, task dependencies, babel, PlantUML integration, ...

After a while, people started to come to me on stage and asked me what tool that is. 😃

I think that is great, and being able to use my preferred formatting for posts awesome, but I have to admit, the combined markdown for links is perhaps a /little/ over the top e.g.: [[{{< relRef other-page-name >}}][Link Text]]
I almost feel sorry for the round brackets who somehow weren't invited to this bracket fest, but perhaps the round brackets were already occupied keeping my running.

I know this may be a dumb question, but: are there any guides about using ? Not about how to use, they key bindings but rather how to it effectively - like how big files are best and so on. I know this should come from experience, but since I'm only 6 months in , having some inherited knowledge would be very useful!
