I'm writing a longer (as it seems) article on the lock-in effect of solutions like #Obsidian that are using open formats like #Markdown for storage. The file format is not the only thing that might lock you in.
I did already start with a list of arguments but also want to collect your ideas so that I don't forget a good argument.
Please, no emotions, just facts and objective arguments.
Reply here in this thread and I'll collect ideas from it. 🙇
Wenn du noch nicht viel über die Themen weißt oder noch unschlüssig bist, solltest du dir das mal anhören - gibt einen guten Überblick über diese ziemlich ausgereiften Powertools.
Looking forward to setting up my used #thinkpad with #linuxmint next week. Looking for recos for easy syncing, mainly for my #emacs and #orgmode stuff. What have you used that you could recommend? I do have GDrive working well on my Windows machines, so could go that route,, though not familiar with how to do that on linux. Thanks!
I really have to say that this is a really good tool once you switch from the #markdown default setting to the much better #orgmode syntax. 😉
I'll migrate the #Joplin data from my previous testrun over to logseq and go with that for the moment.
Don't worry, I'll probably never leave my Org setup. It's for another person's management and knowledge base where #Emacs was no option, unfortunately.
In my "play time" with #Obsidian as an #orgmode user I haven't felt like I trust this app for many reasons. One is that I have installed too many plugins and now it’s overly complicated/bloated - I don't even want to open it. Time to dumb it back down and if it still doesn't stick then keep using #orgmode. The only reason I've been testing it out is a desire for a better iOS experience with my notes.
They're working on a DB version in parallel that will provide better scalability, performance and realtime #collaboration (#RTC). They'll charge for RTC.
Unfortunately, this seems to be the end for #orgdown markup as they are implementing #Markdown only now and a conversion feature later on. 😞
Therefore, logseq is not an option for me any more and I'll need to think about a migration strategy for my wife.
One Big Text File Sure Sounds like OrgMode
Reading through Ellane's look at One Big Text File it seems to me that most of her issues could be solved with OrgMode. You can resurface notes on a set schedule with the Agenda feature. Events are simply headings with dates, and tasks get TODO added to the front of a heading.
I know this may be a dumb question, but: are there any guides about using #orgmode? Not about how to use, they key bindings but rather how to it effectively - like how big files are best and so on. I know this should come from experience, but since I'm only 6 months in #emacs, having some inherited knowledge would be very useful!
Today I spontaneously went on the empty #ArtAndPlay stage on #37C3, plugged in my laptop & started to silently demo #Emacs#orgmode to the surrounding people in full-screen so that people were not able to realize which tool I'm using.
I demoed the syntax (lists, tables, ...), spreadsheet functions, export to PDF & docx, task headings, bi-directional links, task dependencies, babel, PlantUML integration, ...
After a while, people started to come to me on stage and asked me what tool that is. 😃
I asked Khoj (https://khoj.dev/) to summarize how I org in 2023 speaking in the style of Dr. House MD.
> Ah, another human seeking to understand the mysteries of... adjusts glasses ...org-mode! chuckles Well, well, well. Let me tell you something about this "exocortex" and "second brain" business.
Falling further down the #emacs RH adventures.... just discovered #orgmode and that might be the clincher for me. My writing is very much outline-driven, and I've always wanted an outliner with movable sections (had something in the early PC days that did that). When you combine all of the other functionality, #emacs gets more and more attractive. Key binding memorization is overwhelming but just saw some good advice: use M-x and functions at first. So we continue.
Hey #PKM people, as it seems fashionable here to humblebrag by posting screenshots of graphs: What exactly are the benefits of a graph view? Aren't bi-directional links just simpler and thus more effective?
#emacs#orgmode#orgbabel#phloggersgarage#gopher
A silly phost in which I try to use ansi escape codes in orgmode, ultimately not really succeeding (well, I produced a form that could be C-j'ed that used ansi-color and insert that technically did it, temporarily). How?
I'd like to use a workflow where each #Mastodon message that gets bookmarked by me is automatically screenshotted to PNG, archived in a local directory and its text content + image descriptions get added to a text file (preferably #orgdown) together with a link to the screenshot and the original message URL.
#emacs people: Is there an easy way to customise org-capture (and perhaps org-agenda) to just use the same window and leave my window management alone?
I’m knee-deep into stack overflow posts and wasting way too much time here. This is one of my most longstanding annoyances of #orgmode
(This is actually one of the reasons #orgrr does not use org-capture for new notes.)
