Gift Article from Washinton Post: Chile’s deadly wildfires wiped out neighborhoods. One stood unscathed.

ai6yr, to advice

Good from Colleen Hagerty here:
"Disaster preparedness advice often focuses on stuff, offering lists of material items to stock in your house or car. And while this is certainly important, there are a number of ways that you can up your readiness and resiliency through relationships rather than adding something to your cart."

This morning's home project: retrofitting the bird-sized eave vents with intumescent, fire blocking vents. Missed a bunch the last time around, only noticed it when I got access to the interior space they are connected to. Wildfire risk mitigation.

ai6yr,

Here's a full primer on wildfire vents from the University of California. https://ucanr.edu/sites/fire/Prepare/Building/Vents/

ai6yr, to hiking

Report from one of the students of my wilderness first aid class this weekend, that he realized how useful it was to take the class already: one of his hiking club members apparently had a heart issue yesterday (on a hike he was not on) and ended up airlifted to the hospital.

Professional crew appears to be working through the neighborhood again this year. Usually they come once in spring... after all the rain, apparently the city has had to send them out for a second time. (all the brush is back up around my neighbor's houses... I cleared out behind my house myself a month ago, though new stuff is sprouting again....)

Burning Man: "We're people! Honest!"

Everyone Else: "You're only acting like a people to get something."

Burning Man: "We're special."

Everyone Else: "We know. We're also aware of how often you pretend to be people in your everyday."'

Burning Man: "Rescue us!"

Everyone Else: "From what? Yourselves?"

LaNaehForaday,

@YakyuNightOwl

I apologize but your ignorance is showing. I know its very popular to be down on Burning Man for a wide audience of people.
HOWEVER, have you ever taken even a second to look at their website??

Because this is one of the most highly organized events that happens in your lifetime. Where else have you ever known this number of people getting together to do WHATEVER so successfully that it continues to draw these numbers since 1992.

This was an epic storm system and if any of these people need help, it is NOT because they think they are "special".

'children of young primary school age as soon as they start school, effectively … going to be doing lessons and in schools, which was a era practice… like stripping down and learning first aid and if people go to university, starting in September of this year, there's going to be a compulsory programme of Russian taught at university level and also military training.'

We know we will have a better chance at a fresh start when we take time to pare down possessions and pack treasures before a move. To bring unsorted junk from every place we've ever lived would be a total disaster!

So why do we do this with relationships?
