Chanting “Education is a right, not just for the rich and white,” hundreds of Concordia University students marched down Sherbrooke St. Wednesday afternoon before joining their peers at McGill in the latest protest against tuition hikes targeting anglophone universities in Quebec.
More than 20,000 students at #McGill and #Concordia universities are set to strike for a week on Monday to protest the #Quebec government's tuition hikes for out-of-province and international students.
In October 2023, after months of meetings with Higher Education Minister Pascale Déry, the English universities thought tuition reform would not hurt them. They were very wrong.
McGill and Concordia universities said they were shocked in October when Higher Education Minister
Pascale Déry announced major tuition changes directly targeting the English institutions’ finances, enrolment and reputations.
« #Concordia and #McGill universities are suing the #Quebec government over its new #tuition policies, which would hike rates for out-of-province and international #students hoping to study in the province.
A letter from Concordia president and vice-chancellor #GrahamCarr said the university does "not enter the process lightly" and that it "tried to engage with the government in good faith on the tuition issue throughout the fall" »
I'm not an economist and I can't tell you what the tuition was for this school in 1995 when #AileenCannon attended, but today the annual #Tuition is $49,250 plus assorted fees, $197,000 for four years. This is a HIGH SCHOOL, not a university. Maybe she received a scholarship or had some other form of financial aid. If she did, she hasn't disclosed it anywhere. Cannon arrived from #Colombia and entered an exclusive private HS. Who paid?
«We profoundly reject the polarization the proposed #tuition changes are founded on — pitting students and universities against each other, suggesting the success of one institution must come at the expense of another.»
Reminder that a #student#strike against #Quebec's discriminatory #tuition hike (for non-local students attending English-language #universities) is happening today at 1pm. The march starts from Dorchester Square (Peel & René-Lévesque).
