Apple has a fun example project for depicting earth with a satellite in orbit:

https://developer.apple.com/documentation/visionos/world

This code is REALLY nicely written with discrete entities and systems for modeling the math needed for a convincing depiction

So I tore it apart to build a hologram inspired by ’s opening titles and futuristic 3D UI design, with hundreds of ships swarming the planet marked with their transponder codes

For the past couple of years, I have been watching TV shows and movies on the iPad.

The worst thing to happen to me was the introduction of multitasking. Since then, whenever there is a slow part in the movie, I would open a social media app and scroll. And then, if I found something good, I would stop the show.

A 2-hour show takes me about six hours to watch over a week or so.

With vision in theater mode, I found myself without any desire to multitask and can now finish shows on time.

@Migueldeicaza What about battery time with Vision when watching movies? Apple says 2.5h (?) which is "barely" just enough to watch a full-time movie, and some of them - won't fit in 😅

But maybe video playback gives more battery time?

I wonder, if Sony opens the up to be used on the PC… Might they be willing to open up their excellent VR Controllers to be used on the Apple ? It's missing from the platform, Apple won't do their own controllers, and they already have support for the DualSense. Positioning is done with with accellerators/gyroscopes in the controller and an IR ring around it that the cameras can see. Could all be done with the hardware, I think.

Just found out two things:

  1. apparently just uses Sidecar as the Mac screen mirroring mechanism, which makes sense when you think about it.
  2. You can not use Continuity Camera and Sidecar at the same time.

Is that a battery in your pocket or…kidding aside, this bit about the on the recent made me chuckle.

@gruber: “We are powering it with the best battery anyone has ever made.”

@adamlisagor: “This is an ingenious solution to a design problem, and look how we’ve figured it out. And it’s called…Battery.”

Gruber: “The best place to put a big battery is right here, in your pocket.”

Sure, some folks who bought the Vision Pro are returning them. You'd expect them to do so within Apple's 14-day return window..

But I have one question I haven't seen answered by any of the coverage about this so far: is the Vision Pro return rate disproportionate, or higher than any other new AR/VR product?

Things you now hear that you never would have heard before:

“Oh, shit, I almost tripped on the App Store.”

cvb, to VisionPro
@cvb@techhub.social avatar

thoughts.

  • hoopla will die down by March.
  • devs will be discouraged with little downloads and start mulling what’s the point?
  • influencers will start talking more about what it’s missing. Like iPad!!
  • hardware will likey be on a two year revision cycle like iPad. People will be impatient.
  • articles will start to appear about it’s lack of killer games and apps.

I wish Apple soaked it into making a better Mac and iPad.

So I've got something a little more sophisticated I want to build with 's 3D canvas, and the biggest hitch was figuring out how to snap an object to a detected plane.

Thanks to some REALLY complicated sample code from Apple, I built up a proof of concept that raycasts from the device's position and orientation and projects a dropzone onto detected planes

You can see it moving from the desk to the top of the encyclopedia here

https://developer.apple.com/documentation/visionos/placing-content-on-detected-planes

video/mp4

danilo,
@danilo@hachyderm.io avatar

My plane plopping code is at last working

Apple’s sample code was quite helpful, if also tightly coupled and baroque. This is a bit more generalized, and working with SwiftData

has me right back to the beginner phase, though. I can't estimate time or project complexity for shit right now, this was much harder than I expected!

video/mp4

danilo,
@danilo@hachyderm.io avatar

So I THINK I have my brain fully around this problem of plane tracking and entity placement

No hate at all to the hardworking folks at Apple devrel, who surely moved mountains while a rolling boulder chased them toward deadline

But the ObjectPlacement demo project suffered from tight coupling that tangled all its insights together

I BELIEVE a more transferrable approach to the problem is our old favorite, the delegate pattern.

Gonna rewrite it AGAIN and see if I'm wrong
