This is how a EZ clamp spring looks like after a decent few months of usage.

As you can see, it's quite compressed now and, as a result, not springy enough to hold the clamp up properly anymore.

That lifespan is not bad by any means (easy enough to re-print) but does that happen to y'all too or is it just me?

It's also just the handlebar one; the other is holding up fine.

I remember seeing a variant of this which had an actual metal spring inside; I might look into that.

After a bit of confusion, I found out why my was being laggy on some website despite me turning off Javascript.

Turns out I had set layers.acceleration.disabled while debugging V-Sync.

What this setting does is effectively disable hardware acceleration for a core component of page compositing; making everything laggy.

Mess with settings in a dedicated guinea profile people!

Kein Telefonica.

Atemu,

@AlexS

Nach meiner Rechnung sind das:

30€/6Mo = 60€/12Mo = 5€/1Mo

16GB/12Mo = 1.33GB/1Mo

Hello everyone, so at my new job I'll get a MacBook snd until supports the security processor I will be a good girl and use . For someone coming from a setup mixing , / , even some and does weird stuff with sometimes: Are there some general recommendations from other exiles (I use vanilla nowadays mostly, so maybe not too much lol?)

I currently plan to use the mac as mostly a shiny looking physical terminal + some vscode/vi, that should be mostly trivial. As such I'm mostly worried about things like a proper keyboard layout (I use us altgr-intl, caps mapped to ctrl, tab to esc).

Otherwise I'm thinking of grabbing and activating Lockdown Mode. I've seen nix-home and will try setting that up for day-to-day tasks/tools.

Coming from Evolution, is Apple Mail decent? Any other "classic" GNOME tool I'd miss? Currently looking for trustworthy replacements for Nick's YT downloader, Warp (Wormhole GUI), Frog (OCR tool), Obfuscate (picture obfuscator/censoring tool), Characters (searching through Unicode symbols/emoji). Anything else I may take for granted but is different? ¹

¹ I already know the cli differences w.r.t. bsd based tools, but my personal scripts are mostly posix/ksh8x compliant anyway :D

Atemu,
@Atemu@darmstadt.social avatar

@ljrk

I can confirm that (after quite a bit of tweaking) the mac makes for a really comfortable terminal + editor + browser client.

Use spaces, disable space LRU and bind keys to switch spaces.

Lockdown mode is unnecessary unless you're actively targeted.

https://github.com/xv0x7c0/osx-us-altgr-intl

Most GTK stuff should just work on mac. We've got most of what you listed packaged in .

-manager works really well. There's also -darwin.

You can use GNU coreutils. The old BSD ones are meh.

(Posted this on LinkedIn because that audience probably needs to hear it a lot more, but why not here too)

Remember that every year you go without a raise that at least matches the rate of inflation is an effective cut to your salary.

If your bosses tell you that "you have to earn any raise with exceptional performance", what they actually mean is "I want to trick you into accepting a pay cut for no reason."

Example: If you started at 100k€ salary in Germany in 2018, by 2022 your effective yearly salary has dropped by more than 12k€.

The Librecast LCRQ (RaptorQ) library just received its first bug report on Darwin (macOS/aarch64) from the packagers.

TBH I forgot Darwin was a thing. It appears to be under an FSF + OSI approved license, so I'd accept patches for it.

I've no idea where I could get access to a box for testing or even how to fire up a VM for it. Anyone working with this that can advise?

https://todo.sr.ht/~librecast/lcrq/8

Atemu,
@Atemu@darmstadt.social avatar

@dentangle Darwin in this case refers to the unfree userspace of macOS.
You can get a VM running for it but that's of questionable legality and a bit more involved. I don't think you're expected to support it as a non-user.

This rather looks like a little call for help; whether you've seen an error like this before and know what could cause it.

If we figure this out, it'd be great if you could still accept the patch. It might very well be an issue that affects free platforms aswell.

I consider this to be obvious, but the correct way to design (laptop/desktop) UIs for most applications is a slick, snappy graphical UI with completely keyboard-based and discoverable navigation.

Interestingly I know no application which does this, although it is certainly doable.

Atemu,
@Atemu@darmstadt.social avatar
Atemu,
@Atemu@darmstadt.social avatar

@maralorn

Note that Emacs is far more than a large window with monospace text. GUI Emacs (the preferred way to use it) supports variably sized fonts (both horizontal and vertical) images and more.

Emacs users prefer text-based interactions as they're easy to navigate with a keyboard but even text-based UIs can do quite a bit more than you might expect.
Check out (heh) for example.

Whether Emacs' UI is "slick" is subjective but it's certainly more than a monospaced grid of characters.

Will allow me to keep instead of forcing me to adapt in the upcoming years?

Any opinions on that?

Background:

I do like x-forwarding within my LAN. I work on business machine, ssh to my personal host and simply start any application which pops up on my local machine. This also worked with sound forwarding.

I never play computer games and so I do think that Wayland doesn't necessarily offer me much advantage over Xorg while I've read that x-forwarding won't be possible.

Atemu,
@Atemu@darmstadt.social avatar

@publicvoit I think you may have misunderstood some things.

Wayland is not for gamers. If anything, that's the audience that benefits the least from Wayland currently because almost any game will be running via Xwayland anyways and pretty much all wayland compositors force mailbox presentation mode which is pretty meh for input delay.

I find it highly unlikely that Xorg support will be removed from any time soon. More things will default to wayland though (as they should).

Atemu,
@Atemu@darmstadt.social avatar

@publicvoit RE: x-forwarding:

I have used X11 forwarding before (to a mac no less) but I don't have personal experience with forwarding on Wayland. Have you tried ?
