Kein Telefonica.
Hello everyone, so at my new job I'll get a MacBook snd until #AsahiLinux supports the security processor I will be a good girl and use #macOS. For someone coming from a setup mixing #ArchLinux, #Fedora#Silverblue / #CoreOS, even some #NixOS and does weird stuff with #podman sometimes: Are there some general recommendations from other #Linux exiles (I use vanilla #GNOME nowadays mostly, so maybe not too much lol?)
I currently plan to use the mac as mostly a shiny looking physical terminal + some vscode/vi, that should be mostly trivial. As such I'm mostly worried about things like a proper keyboard layout (I use us altgr-intl, caps mapped to ctrl, tab to esc).
Otherwise I'm thinking of grabbing #Firefox and activating Lockdown Mode. I've seen nix-home and will try setting that up for day-to-day tasks/tools.
Coming from Evolution, is Apple Mail decent? Any other "classic" GNOME tool I'd miss? Currently looking for trustworthy replacements for Nick's YT downloader, Warp (Wormhole GUI), Frog (OCR tool), Obfuscate (picture obfuscator/censoring tool), Characters (searching through Unicode symbols/emoji). Anything else I may take for granted but is different? ¹
¹ I already know the cli differences w.r.t. bsd based tools, but my personal scripts are mostly posix/ksh8x compliant anyway :D
(Posted this on LinkedIn because that audience probably needs to hear it a lot more, but why not here too)
Remember that every year you go without a raise that at least matches the rate of inflation is an effective cut to your salary.
If your bosses tell you that "you have to earn any raise with exceptional performance", what they actually mean is "I want to trick you into accepting a pay cut for no reason."
Example: If you started at 100k€ salary in Germany in 2018, by 2022 your effective yearly salary has dropped by more than 12k€.
@dentangle Darwin in this case refers to the unfree userspace of macOS.
You can get a VM running for it but that's of questionable legality and a bit more involved. I don't think you're expected to support it as a non-user.
This rather looks like a little call for help; whether you've seen an error like this before and know what could cause it.
If we figure this out, it'd be great if you could still accept the patch. It might very well be an issue that affects free platforms aswell.
I consider this to be obvious, but the correct way to design (laptop/desktop) UIs for most applications is a slick, snappy graphical UI with completely keyboard-based and discoverable navigation.
Interestingly I know no application which does this, although it is certainly doable.
Note that Emacs is far more than a large window with monospace text. GUI Emacs (the preferred way to use it) supports variably sized fonts (both horizontal and vertical) images and more.
Emacs users prefer text-based interactions as they're easy to navigate with a keyboard but even text-based UIs can do quite a bit more than you might expect.
Check out (heh) #Magit for example.
Whether Emacs' UI is "slick" is subjective but it's certainly more than a monospaced grid of characters.
Will #NixOS allow me to keep #Xorg instead of forcing me to adapt #Wayland in the upcoming years?
Any opinions on that?
Background:
I do like x-forwarding within my LAN. I work on business machine, ssh to my personal host and simply start any application which pops up on my local machine. This also worked with sound forwarding.
I never play computer games and so I do think that Wayland doesn't necessarily offer me much advantage over Xorg while I've read that x-forwarding won't be possible.
@publicvoit I think you may have misunderstood some things.
Wayland is not for gamers. If anything, that's the audience that benefits the least from Wayland currently because almost any game will be running via Xwayland anyways and pretty much all wayland compositors force mailbox presentation mode which is pretty meh for input delay.
I find it highly unlikely that Xorg support will be removed from #NixOS any time soon. More things will default to wayland though (as they should).
