It was a beautiful and calm morning as we watched the Sugar Island Ferry taking early risers across the St. Mary's River to Sault, Michigan. It was a beautiful snapshot of everyday life in a gorgeous natural setting.

Saturday, May 11 🌺

  1. Saw a bit of the aurora late last night and discovered that the scent of jasmine perfumes the whole back garden.
  2. Got the dining room cleared for tomorrow’s guests. (Not as easy as it sounds - it’s practically an Amazon annex.)
  3. Making lime & thyme potato salad today, using my very own key limes. Sooo yum!
  4. Bonus: More photos from vagabond son & DIL at Bryce Canyon NP, where it snowed a little on them yesterday (above 9100 feet).

Bryce Canyon’s pinkish-colored rocks with dark green trees and a bit of falling snow.

Wednesday, May 8🌺

  1. Every bush, shrub & tree in my entire yard has been in frenetic motion from WIND 💨🍃all day, even though it’s sunny & warm. I’m hunkering down inside.
  2. Hosting a birthday 🎂 dinner for my grandson this weekend & had to order a crapload of junk food today. Balanced it out with an indulgent package of halibut.
  3. Vagabond son & DIL left Zion NP for Bryce Canyon, which I remember (as a four-year-old) as the land of pink stone castles with turrets. This pic is of Zion.

I loved visiting the different parks in the Milwaukee County Parks system. They were usually big enough that you could often forget you were living in a large metropolitan city. There's a photography technique I use that I never see anyone else do so it's time I share it. I use it to capture action shots of people... typically dancing.

Most people would handle these situations by zooming in, spraying and praying, or being exceedingly patient for that ONE shot to materialize.

Those strategies were too unreliable for me so I learned to move with my subjects.

I pre-focus the lens for a set distance, wide-angle, full manual, and set the camera against my cheek. I move the camera only by moving my feet. If my subject twists, I twist. If they step toward me, I step back so they stay in focus.

Because I’m not using any viewfinder, my peripheral vision is good. You immerse yourself in the scene. When it feels right you shoot blind. With practice, your shots will line up.

You obviously will need good balance and confident footwork for this. I'm reaching back on years of Shaolin Kung Fu. If you've done dance or martial arts, you can get the hang of this.

One of the things that I miss about Milwaukee is the sight and sounds of motorcycles (not just Harleys!). Using my camera, I caught the vibe of Milwaukee's streets and their symphony of bikes at a street festival. I gave my photograph a digital touch-up to really make it pop.
