Oh I see the blah ranch house in my neighborhood that sold for $2M in June 2022 and was relisted after they "upgraded" it into vulgar fanciness for $3.9M in April 2023 has still not sold and they've had to successively drop the ask price down to $2.8M now.

Very normal housing market. (I rent)

@inquiline it’s a good thing that salary in California’s public and private university system is keeping pace … 😒

Never noticed this amazing tag on Elizabeth Eisenstein's NYT obit:

"This article is set in 8.7 point Imperial and was printed on one of several presses, including the Goss Colorliner. It is also published, permanently if intangibly, at nytimes.com/section/obituaries."

An interesting and entirely unscientific data point today: my largely European journalism and political communication masters students today said they got most of their news from Instagram by following individual journalists directly.

These NYT Biden-Trump poll results are a living nightmare.

@VCP it was a real mindf**c

Chanders,

@VCP honest to god though this makes no sense. Biden and Trump are EVEN amongst younger voters?!?

Bought some books - mostly again with Daunt Books Marylebone (@DauntBooksPub) 📚

(And yes, asking about whether I read out the ones I bought before would be extremely impolite 🙃)

Chanders,
@Chanders@sciences.social avatar

@vicgrinberg @DauntBooksPub such beautifully designed books.

@aram people know but don’t care. It’s like expecting media scholars to make well informed media consumption choices which we all know we don’t do.

I just don’t see how they can put up with the performative nonsense and algorithmically generated outrage all over again. It’s possible people just had a very different experience of twitter I did as a power user who tends to take things personally. But I don’t know. I so don’t miss that crap.

Chanders,
@Chanders@sciences.social avatar

@aram like -by the time I left Twitter I had been angry (periodically, nothing permanent [i think]) with multiple real life friends. I had one or two honest colleagues tell me my Twitter personality drove them crazy. And now people want to do it all over again!?

Chanders,
@Chanders@sciences.social avatar

@MediaLawProf @aram where I’ve landed - after a year of the multiple stages of grief- is that twitter was bad for me* …. But everyone is different and is in a different situation so I’m not gonna judge.

*(it was also bad for the world but that claim violates the second part of the above thesis) 😉

In any pre-Trump era, this alone would be grounds for resignation.

“Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, apologized for accusing military and security officials of lapses that led to the Hamas massacre but declined to accept responsibility himself.”

I’ve been off here awhile while tending to a bunch of other stuff but yeah, as y’all may remember from my #immaculategrid antics, I’m kind of a nutso Texas Rangers fan. A very happy one tonight!

When Tom Friedman writes about Israel and the Middle East, he's worth reading. Here's a free link. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/19/opinion/biden-speech-israel-gaza.html?unlocked_article_code=1.4kw.0RYp.F5DXzAJyd1k1&smid=url-share

@dankennedy_nu it’s kind of amazing how inane he sounds about almost everything else and how worth it he is on this one topic.

    A social media app where one story- no matter how important- does not dominate the agenda to the exclusion of everything else is a far healthier way to live with media, and far closer to how human life is structured.

    “Google built a business around getting people off its site. The company grew and branched out, but I suspect you still use that core tool regularly, if not daily. It was perhaps the best encapsulation of a mantra I first heard from web pioneer Dave Winer: The more you send people away, the more they come back.”
