Almost a month ago we thought we were saying goodbye to Cookie. Cookie was like, not today (if you’re ever in SF needing an emergency vet, Dr Winnie Ybarra at SF AMC is incredible and I believe the reason why Cookie is alive today)

A video of Cookie running

ClickyMcTicker,

@skinnylatte Cookie’s got places to be and smells to sniff!

ClickyMcTicker,

@mfat Depending on how they’re blocking VPNs (i.e. blocking specific ports, or allowing specific ports), you may be able to run one on a non-standard port. As an extreme example, you could run Wireguard on port 80 (HTTP), which is practically the last possible port that can ever be blocked on public internet.

    @caiocgo Which methods have you used and what was the problem? I’m a big advocate of Nextcloud for home and small business. I personally use the snap due to its ease of setup.

    @qlp@linh.social avatar

    With the deprecation of the armv7 architecture in pfSense's upstream operating system, FreeBSD, it looks like pfSense+ 24.03 will probably be the one of the last major releases that I'll be seeing for my Netgate 3100 firewall.

    I'm debating on replacing it with one of their newer appliances (either a 4200 or a 6100, as the 2100 doesn't have any 2.5 GbE ports) or getting a cheap-ish N100 or N300 passively-cooled system and pay for a pfSense+ subscription.

    @qlp Do you need the features provided by the plus version? If not, you could just switch to CE.

    I was telling my wife, imagine life from cookie’s perspective: strangers tell her she’s cute and they love her every five minutes, internet fans root for her, the streets of the world are filled with delicious edible food, even when it’s trash.

    like the very high Californian woman once told me when I was walking her: ‘this dog like, totally looks like she has NO TRAUMAAAAAA’

    (Other than having to go to the vet sometimes)

    ClickyMcTicker,

    @skinnylatte I just like how they say Dog in case someone isn’t sure what Cookie is.

    "An arms race on our streets." Oversized SUVs and pickups are bad for all of us: pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, and drivers. It's not fair that safety testing in Canada is only for those on the inside of the vehicle. Sign the federal petition here: https://ourcommons.ca/petitions/en/Petition/Details?Petition=e-4944

    An excellent article and report about the issue of large vehicles: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-report-from-advocacy-groups-urges-tighter-regulations-for-suvs-and/

    ClickyMcTicker,

    Hard limits on height. (Shave a foot or two off them)
    Hard limits on engine size. (2L is enough for private vehicles. If you want a bigger car you can drive it slower)
    Remove ownership by private individuals (work trucks and rentals only. Larger engines require a license)
    Hard limits on top speed (install speed governing devices that limit them to the highest speed limit in the region)
    You can have your road tank but it’ll do about 35mph tops and accelerate “eventually”

    Loving the Fujifilm X100VI so far, but my hottest take is I so prefer Sony's controls

    ClickyMcTicker,

    @christianselig Sony’s menus may be horridly laid out, but once you understand where everything is they’re incredibly functional. I’ve got most settings dialed in how I want, and the rest of them are on physical buttons (exposure control), the function menu (AF/AE), or the favorites menu (VF/rear, flash settings, the setting that controls whether it shows the actual exposure or boosts (actual for casual shooting, boost for studio flash)).

    1/🧵

    ClickyMcTicker,

    @christianselig
    2/🧵
    As for the rest of Sony’s bodies, they’re incredibly ergonomic despite the small size. I can hold them fine with either hand, even taking portrait photos solo left handed. The wheels are smooth and the dials feel great. Even after a little damage, my older A7s buttons still click okay (liquid and physical damage).

    The JPGs are just fine. A little adjustment of the settings gets them basically to where Fuji is, and how often do you go straight to phone?

    and i want to delete the quotes from all of the files at once

    what's my best approach?

    i use sublime text, and vim, if it helps

    @skinnylatte Since everyone else has given fantastic advice, let me out myself as the monster who would import the data to a spreadsheet, delimited by line, and use complicated formulas to strip the quotation marks before exporting back to the original format.

    @skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

    I have been in a typography class for 3 months. It's more intense than I thought it would be (I thought it was going to be 'how to pick typefaces' but it's 'how to design typefaces).

    I stuck with it because I am interested in learning something I don't know anything about. Today I got my grade: C+.

    My perfectionist self says, 'why C+?'

    My kinder, compassionate self (who is thrilled that I got to do something I never thought I would), says, "yay! you designed a typeface!!"

    ClickyMcTicker,

    @skinnylatte Nifty! Is there a story behind the X and Z? They seem out of place compared to the rest in my eyes, which is a testament to how cohesive everything else is.

    LOL, burglars are now using Wi-Fi jammers in Los Angeles to disable people's entire security setup.

    ClickyMcTicker,

    @mjausson @ai6yr Wired systems are always cheaper than wireless systems, with the exception of the $20 WiFi cameras that act as backdoors while trying to sell you cloud subscriptions.

    $45 is enough to get a quality wired camera:
    https://m.reolink.com/product/rlc-510a

    Wires are easy to run if you’re not picky about appearances, and not hard if you are.

    Snipping wires is an extreme act which is EASILY push alerted on by all quality camera systems.

    For the record, Taylor Swift and her team still implement multiple COVID precautions in 2024 including restricting interactions and activities with people outside of her bubble, and wearing masks.

    https://au.lifestyle.yahoo.com/why-taylor-swift-wont-meet-with-aussie-fans-while-down-under-221016650.html

    ClickyMcTicker,

    @Grant_M @the_q @luckytran I think there’s a fundamental misunderstanding going on here. You’ve conflated Taylor Swift the person with Taylor Swift the business. If Taylor Swift the person gets covid, Taylor Swift the business shuts down operations for 2-4 weeks. That’s upwards of hundreds of millions of dollars, not even factoring if she is out longer. Taylor Swift has zero personal agency in this decision. It’s likely decided by lawyers.

    ClickyMcTicker,

    @harshil @christianselig
    As a former owner of the original: Yes, if you want to use it casually, for traveling, dragging around everywhere you, etc. It’s small, stylish, reasonably high quality, and absolutely not a toy (but don’t dunk it in a pool)

    If you’re looking to expand the hobby in ways that would involve more equipment (other lenses, flash, etc), go with something else. Something like a used Sony A7 with an FE 35/1.8 would provide equivalent or 🧵

    ClickyMcTicker,

    @harshil @christianselig
    🧵 better image quality and functionality for the same price while providing significantly more (aka any) room for expanding your kit. The trade off is a larger camera, Fuji’s subjectively better JPG rendering, and probably a few other QOL differences.

    If you want something that takes better photos than your iPhone, or you have humble needs, pick it up.

    If you want to get into photography and have high expectations, look elsewhere.

    Paramount kept their staff on hand to handle stressful conditions, surely kept lots of folks on-call to ensure the Superbowl could be streamed on their service, had record viewership numbers and then immediately laid off 800 of the people who helped give them that success the next day so that the executive leadership could pocket all the profits without sharing it with the labor force who built it.

    Small Fedi or Big Fedi?

    ClickyMcTicker,

    @tr12345 @msh @evan
    I don’t understand the rabid obsession with a micro-fediverse. There are economies of scale which, if ignored, make the total environmental/monetary cost of the fediverse explode as we go smaller and smaller per instance. I’d rather have admins build to a size that works for them and fill out their moderator ranks to meet their needs.
    Tiny instances run by individual administrators reeks of feudalism and unexpected server downtown to me

    So I understand both sides of the "Threads" debate, and personally fall on the side of "Admins, listen to your users, and defederation is kinda the point of this place".

    That being said ... my emotional response is pretty clear as of about today.

    I was never on FB, always thought it was trashy, never IG either.

    If Zuck comes waltzing into the fedi with gargron's embrace ... I have only 1 feeling about it.

    ClickyMcTicker,

    @maegul A genuine question: how can you have formed such strong negative opinions about the users of Facebook and Instagram without ever having been on the platform? I understand you can have views on Meta based on news articles, but the actual users?

    They’re people. Perhaps not tech savvy, but not all of us once were. Give the people a chance before you decide they’re not worthy of sitting at the table with us.

    ClickyMcTicker,

    @Pete90 @MangoPenguin Bytes (B) are used for storage, bits (b) are used for network. 1B=8b.
    2.5Gbps equals 312.5MBps.
    With that in mind, there are a lot of moving parts to diagnose, assuming you want to reach that speed for a transfer. Can the storage of both machines reach that speed? I believe I saw the NAS’s disk tested and clocked at 470ish MBps, but can the client side keep up? I saw the iPerf test, but what was the exact command used? Did you multithread it?

    ClickyMcTicker,

    @papelitofeliz
    VPN for sure:

    1. Set up both locations with Dynamic DNS providers. DuckDNS is free, but if you’re building infrastructure you may as well buy your own domain and set it up through that (Namecheap is what I use and recommend).

    2. Set up a Wireguard tunnel between both locations. Do not specify an endpoint for either. You could specify endpoints to boost security (barely), but it will cause your system to fail during IP changes, for the duration of the TTL.

    ClickyMcTicker,

    @papelitofeliz
    3. Set up your PiHole on a static private IP.

    1. Ensure both sites can route across the tunnel. Based on your experience level and scope, dynamic routing is not recommended or necessary, which means static routes. Point a route for each side’s subnet to the Wireguard tunnel IPs so your firewalls know how to reach and respond to each other across the tunnel.

    2. Configure your devices to use PiHole for their DNS, via DHCP ideally.
