@Dangerous_beans@aus.social

Generic weird nerd, queer and trans, and blade witch. I'll share various bladesmithing and other projects, but this will probably be 50% cat photos. Very sober

Sense of humor removed to make space for more facts about 1980s Toyotas

Is it appropriate to play with the electric chainsaw on Christmas eve? Or is that a slightly rude amount of noise?

I guess I'm moving my Irregular Biology Facts newsletter. I knew substack weren't perfect, but i just wanted to talk about vole chromosomes not run my own email server
I'll let you all know when i find somewhere else

Dangerous_beans,

Did you know that in some Ellobius genus voles there is no Y chromosome? Instead the genes that trigger development of males has moved to an X chromosome
Other Ellobius voles do have Y chromosomes, so there is an ancestral Y chromosome

A couple of years ago a friend gave me a sous vide kit, I taught myself how to use it, did some fun experiments, and as a result have cooked some of the best steak I've ever eaten. Unfortunately it's kinda ruined eating steak in restaurants as it's usually not as good.

Similarly when I started playing with writing I learned about Chekhov's gun. As result of which it's kinda ruined a lot of movies and TV. Everything's become very predictable...

Oops.

@quixoticgeek I had the same thing when i learnt to homebrew (before i stopped drinking). i was pretty good at it, made some great beer, and became a giant beer snob :P

When I first got my oestrogen tat I wasn't quite out at work, and a bunch of people were asking me about it. One coworker who was a devout Catholic and former organic chemist wandered up to the group, looked at my oestrogen tattoo, looked at me, and just said "oh"
Then he wandered off

The obsession with DeLoreans is weird. If you want that sort of shape there are cooler 80s cars with a similar style. Being mid engine is a plus, but that's all it has
It's only because it was in some movies that nerds are obsessed with

The wood in the photo above is from a firewood pile
I think there's an interesting thing with custom knives, where most of the cost is in the labour and knowledge but it's hard to explain that to those not familiar with the process. The hard parts of that knife are grinding it thin, polishing the hamon, and having the aesthetic sense of the entire piece

If i had used fancier materials (burl, damascus, ect) the blade may look a lot more impressive, but it wouldn't be any better as a knife

However that impressiveness may make it easier to sell, and it's not much more work
$600 for a knife with a firewood handle is maybe a stretch, $900 for the same knife with mammoth ivory is an easier ask

Dangerous_beans, to threads
@Dangerous_beans@aus.social avatar

I think joining the fediverse is a good thing AND we should also all block them

Open standards are good and threads gives people more choice

But also meta are a bunch of dickheads and don't moderate their user base to make them safe for everyone else

So basically they can join but have to hang out with poa.st until they learn to be better

We have an utterly fucked up idea of what counts as technology. Something that projects many of our biases including gender, and race.

To many these days it's only technology if it's electronic, and used by western men. But to take such a narrow definition is to ignore the amazing technology that surrounds us, and upon which our society is built. As such. It's time for a thread. I'm gonna talk about two different items you use every day, and the technology that goes into them.

@quixoticgeek The best food analogy for steel is actually chocolate. You want to mix in some sugar and some milk powder to make it tasty, and this needs to be well incorporated to stop it having a weird texture.
Also getting the right crystalline structure is really important for both good chocolate and working with steel (as you get into later)

Dangerous_beans,
@Dangerous_beans@aus.social avatar

@quixoticgeek There's also a technological aspect in how we run mass societies. Humans are not evolved to handle millions of people, so how do we organise them to get vaccines and help with garbage collection and the like.
IMO, a lot of politics and religion can be seen as trying different social technologies to organising people to different ends

Please help me find a new instance. I'm super sad about @Gargron 's gullibility and poor ethical choices about meta and need some suggestions. I'd like a decent charachter limit i.e. min 1500. And I really want to be able to know exactly who is running it and exactly what the moderation policy is.

Help me fedizens. You're my only hope.

Prediction:

-Threads incorporates to fediverse
-All content appearing on threads becomes property of Meta
-Masto posts appear on threads and become property of Meta
-Privacy ruined
-Fediverse ruined

Is there another possible direction this goes?

Dangerous_beans,
@Dangerous_beans@aus.social avatar

@Toastie I don't see how that would fly legally? Federation is reproduction of the original work, it doesn't mean the ownership changes
