I didn’t shop the Model Y in 2021 because Tesla never bothered to show the car with the hatch open to tell if Rocky would fit. In 2023 with ID.4 awaiting contactors for an unknown period, I scheduled a test drive after discovering local sales and service here. And I brought along a tape measure. Overhead clearance is good.

Model Y has a sloping arched boot good for Missy. Tight for Rocky. The boot is hinge at the seat back and slops a foot or so at the sill.

Yesterday's toots about serial/parallel hybrid cars vs. trains are really pushing me to make a video about hybrid car tech.

Here's the thing lots of people don't seem to know: the most efficient hybrid powertrains also do the trick of keeping the engine at optimum RPM/efficiency but the engine can still contribute directly to the spinning of the wheels

It's the technique that makes diesel-electric efficient but even more so because it largely skips conversion losses.

Some years back, a 757 startup had developed a hybrid gas turbine generator set for military use powering air defense, command posts, etc that promised to reduce the fuel being schlepped to operate the installation. I don’t see them but did find these folks. Series example.

Also of interest, the US diesel submarines could divide engines between motor bus and battery bus and couple the two with a tie breaker for submerged operation.

Missy: Fall in Dismal Dominion is my kind of weather. Rocky working en-suite patrol. Missy Good Girl stands her neighborhood watch shift as the sun rises on a glorious low country fall day — crystal clear with a splash of crisp, like 20C and calm.

Sun rises off stage. Spooky Tree and Doug’s Mobile Holiday Cottage (elderly motor caravan) back Missy up on neighborhood watch. Streetlight is still on but the sky is robin’s egg blue. Not a hint of color in Spooky, a maple.

President Biden’s McCain Library speech impressed me deeply this morning (0-dark-30, don’t ask). The speech was in part, a tribute to a dear friend and a denunciation of the behavior of a significant segment of our fellow Americans caught up in the fever swamp that is the MAGA cult and it’s grievances.

As I was listening to this speech, I had the feeling that Joe Biden would use many of the themes and quotes in the coming presidential campaign.

    Local congresswoman Nancy Mace said: “How in the hell do you lose an F-35? How is there not a tracking device and we’re asking the public to what, find a jet and turn it in?”

    It's a stealth fighter! Adding a tracking beacon would be self-defeating: if it's made intentionally easy for the USMC to find, that can be used by enemies.

    @ai6yr @theeyewallwx @WXFanatic is about 500 miles across for tropical storm winds. That will cover North Carolina and Virginia. Lee will make a big mess up there with coastal and river flooding. Probably a better deal than freezing rain!

    Nantucket storm surge — dotted line is the model. Blue is the gage reading. Nantucket is a very exposed offshore island. This is just a warm winter storm for this area. Remember “The Perfect Storm”? It all depends on the wind direction. Is the wind pushing water into the bay? How much fetch?

    The Eyewall folk are sleeping in Wednesday the 13th. That is probably wise. appears to be drink-driving his way up the western Atlantic toward Nova Scotia. I rather like this image. The entire Gulf of Maine will likely experience tropical storm force winds. The wind gets all the headlines, the storm surge and extreme rainfall flooding do all the damage and killing.
