As someone working in , it will never cease to amaze me how easy it is for people to misunderstand each other when the word "mode" enters the discussion.
(To be fair, the proper definition of "mode" in is far from obvious and/or trivial.)

Geo,

@j_bertolotti It is trivial in statistics: Pick a number of observations and the mode is the most frequent value observed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mode_(statistics)
So yes, it is very, very easy to cause a misunderstanding.

A new study has found a terrible bottleneck in human ancestors about 900k years ago. There were as few as 1000 individuals left ... if this is verified further there was a time when we almost didn't make it.

@futurebird As terrible as this would be, it would be yet another reminder that at the end of the day, all over 8 billion of today's world are close .

Right now if you search for "country in Africa that starts with the letter K":

  • DuckDuckGo will link to an alphabetical list of countries in Africa which includes Kenya.

  • Google, as the first hit, links to a ChatGPT transcript where it claims that there are none, and summarizes to say the same.

This is because ChatGPT at some point ingested this popular joke:

"There are no countries in Africa that start with K."
"What about Kenya?"
"Kenya suck deez nuts?"

Google Search is over.

I just volunteered to lead a stargazing thing at my local library, which should be exciting - mostly I use big telescopes that professional observers run for me, because I'm a spoiled professional astronomer.

So, hey astronomers (especially amateurs with small scopes)! What are your favourite targets to look at in the sky with a small scope at this time of year? Bonus points if they're pretty easy to find! (It's a just-after-sunset observing session, last quarter moon, so no moon, darn)

Geo,

@sundogplanets I'm often not good at actually finding them, but these are a few I like to watch if I can:
Andromeda - the farthest object visible to a human eye.
Sirius - the brightest star in the sky.
The North Star.
Planets, if you can find any (maybe Saturn will be visible).
Maybe you might even see the Perseids.

Geo,

@Ihazchaos @tagesschau Unübersichtlich? Was ist daran unübersichtlich?

Give a million average people $600 and they will spend it all in the economy. If a million people give $600 to a billionaire, he has another $600 million to sit on.

This is why we have inflation. When we create wealth it eventually gets hoarded instead of recirculated, devaluing our currency.

If we tax excess wealth and support workers by legislating better wages, and bust monopolies instead of unions, that would fight inflation. Return the money to the people.

Geo,

@ned So many people don't get that an is different from a single .

The failure of the Internet to deliver its promise is particularly noticeable when you hunt for repair manuals for a product from the 90s. Used to be, the information would either be there or not there, finable or unfindable.

Now, there are hundreds of algorithmically generated sites claiming to have it just because it appeared in their search logs, generating potemkin village content traps with endless paging, broken-thumbnail named-like-the-file-you-want but actually-just-ebay-photos bullshit

Geo,

@ArneBab @james @bioluminescently @eaton I use Wikipedia so often because I think this is a big issue in general: Assume I want to compare, for example, software. I don't know anything about it initially. Wikipedia is often one of the few useful sides because all other ones are created for marketing purposes, not information. It is surprisingly often easier to find basic facts about a product on than on the product's webpage.

Was tun?

https://scilogs.spektrum.de/fischblog/anthropozaen-holozaen-epoche-erdgeschichte/

Geo,

duckweed, to linuxphones

can an average person use a linux phone?

@linuxphones

I've been reading some articles about mobile Linux and many of them state one must be an "advanced user" or that the software isn't secure. How true is this?

I already use Linux on my laptop, but I'm not a software developer or anything like that. Would I be able to slap a new OS onto an old Android phone and be on my way, or would I run into problems?

Geo,

@duckweed @linuxphones There are numerous Linux versions for smartphones (Android itself is linux-based). I use /e/ OS for privacy reasons. It was pre-installed on my phone, so I can't talk from experience about installing it, but if you'd be interested in looking at the process, it is different for each phone and they have a list here: https://doc.e.foundation/devices
/e/ OS works well for me. LineageOS also has a list: https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/ (But I don't know anyone who uses it).

Geo,

@duckweed @linuxphones So I think, about having to be an advanced user - it highly depends on your phone. Installing is far easier for some than for others.
About : There is an ongoing debate about it. /e/OS is probably not the most secure system in existence, but I think it is at least as secure as Android. The criticism probably comes from specialized circles - they developed some very secure systems, but they are often only available for few phones, like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GrapheneOS

Does anyone have any good resources to learn ? Unfortunately, I only know the commercial variant so far, but I'd like to use open source software for my future map-related projects.

What an asinine headline

Who cares how much the investigation costs?

Not doing the investigation will cost us our democracy

Trump’s golf trips have already cost the American taxpayer over $144,000,000.00
His 31 trips to Mar-a-Lago cost $60,138,000
And to Bedminster $23,515,000

Lock that douche bag up with his golf pants half down 🇺🇸

Geo,

@flexghost Law enforcement and also prison tend to be expensive in general. I'm willing to bet that the police even in fairly small cities costs more than 9 Million on average each year, especially in the US (from the impression I got, their budget is extremely high).
