Moss on a stone

Looks like lots of green lanterns glowing on this clump of moss. The light was catching the spore capsules just right.

Still finding trees toppled by the storms on walks. Hoping that the resulting clearings will allow new tree growth, and that the dead wood will stay in place to create habitat.
Moss spotted today on one of the fallen trees on the hill behind us.

In London and I walked past a shop with this outside. While taking the picture, a woman to the side of me was also looking at it and said to me, "I wonder how you get on these things?"

Me: Funny you should ask…

[After a few minutes of me talking about penny farthings, I did allow her to leave.]

@ruari
Also, how do you get on them? And off again ?

I liked the way the sun was shining through the moss capsules on top of the stone wall.

How do you feel a sense of tangible progress in life other than more money & prestige

Hellybootwader,
@Hellybootwader@mastodon.scot avatar

@impactology good question!
I think for me it’s in leaving something better than when I started.
And by better I mean better for everyone- so eg. increasing biodiversity in a space, helping work/ others be more sustainable. Making someone happy.
Having a positive impact on someone else gives a sense of achievement.
Money is not a goal, it’s a tool. You need enough to survive but If you have more money than you can use it’s only a symbol, and not helping anyone.

Uk folk: As we move into spring/summer, and you notice some pretty verges blooming with wildflowers, please remember to contact your council and say how much you like them & how good they are.
If they only hear from people complaining it looks untidy, they will cut it back.
If there are no verges left long, write & suggest they should be
Plantlife (UK charity) has more info
https://www.plantlife.org.uk/our-work/road-verges/

If not in the uk you can do this too, I just don’t know who you would contact

Managed a bit of environmental education yesterday talking to someone wanting to “tidy up” a patch of nettles and put down some grass seed.
They had no idea that the nettles were an important food source for caterpillars.
Even got into the whole food chain with the caterpillars being needed for the birds.
Was a positive and useful conversation, it’s easy to forget that what seems obvious to me is down to what I’ve learned over the years & not everyone has the same knowledge base.

Late walk yesterday as the light was fading (but the rain had stopped) enjoying the raindrop/moss combo.
Am I just noticing the moss more or is there more moss about this year after our wet warm (at times) winter?
I’m wondering if the climate changed future includes every surface covered in a mosaic of moss, soft and springy and a little damp. Epiphytes growing out of it, cleaning the air and drawing down carbon.

oil and gas lobbyists have deep pockets and access to politicians, but an eu ban could be in the pipeline.

I’ve never seen such a large lichen round here (Fife, Scotland) before.
Look at the size of that thing!
Must have been blown off a tree, it was lying on grass and looked like some fungal damage in progress.

It’s been fed back to me (offline) that some of you here are finding my relentless negativity too much. I know - have been conscious of that too (i really have had a bit of a dip), and I am sorry.

So in an attempt to be more positive again: we had a lovely rainbow 🌈 here in . I shared a picture on our street WhatsApp group and so many others shared theirs and we decided to see it as a sign of hope!

@pvonhellermannn
I hope you come out of this dip soon, it is a completely valid feeling to have, so I get it.
I think it’s a grief of a lost possible future (the one you imagined for yourself/the world) and comes with all the different stages of grieving. None of them linear.
Take care of yourself too.

    @NatureMC I love moss, I think it’s because it really shines in winter and provides the positive green boost my brain needs when lots of other plants are dormant.
    I’ve been peering at plants since forever, and taking photos of them (including moss) since phone cameras made recording memories that way easy (and easy to record for iNaturalist too).
    Like anything, the closer you look, the more you see, and the more interesting it gets.

    Yes it’s true, we do have several (lots?) of pots of sphagnum moss around the house & garden. Mostly they are for growing our insectivorous plants. But as the moss grows pretty well it’s in some extra pots of just sphagnum too.
    I’m not sure if the red sphagnum is a different variety or just a variation on the moss we have. It’s very pretty either way.

    Edit: there are three species of sphagnum in the photo. thanks @kaarne for the info (in comments)

    @lilithsaintcrow a buzzard flew beside me for a bit on the cycle home today.
    I never used to see buzzards round here when I was growing up, they are much more common now.

    Forgot to add this winter heliotrope to on Sunday when I took the photo, it is still lovely today though.
    Still impressed at it’s spreading power, apparently we only have male flowering plants in the UK. Needs a cutting or piece of root to move to another place. This one grows beside the road at the end of the Tay Bridge.
