The staggering electricity demand needed to power next-generation technology is forcing the US to rely on yesterday’s fuel source: coal. Retirement dates for the country’s ageing fleet of coal-fired power plants are being pushed back as concerns over grid reliability and expectations of soaring electricity demand force operators to keep capacity online.
US slows plans to retire coal-fired plants as power demand from AI surges, Amanda Chu, The Financial Times, 2024

Tell me, alongside degrowth, which energy sources do you favor as we abandon fossil fuels? Are you in the nuclear-is-green camp?

I've lost track of the current state of which energy technology is the most effective with the least destruction/emissions involved in its production.

I saw a post from someone saying goodbye to the kids on the school that she had driven for several years and expressing happiness about her new job driving a truck where she will earn double the income.

Like education, management is a very important thing. But still, the thought that we value driving trash around twice as much as driving kids around... It's a bit bleak.

There are few professions I respect more than librarians. We need them.

I respect them, but I also reserve the right to fetishize them a little. Naughty librarian. Flirty librarian. 👀

When we talk about how Republicans have been attacking the institutions and norms of our democracy, this is a great example. The norm was that these issues are ironed out as a matter of course. Suddenly, they are not. Like the norm was that Congress certify the Presidential election, until Republicans decided it was not, and we had Jan 6th.

(Colorado trying to keep Trump off the ballot for insurrection - also not the norm. But neither is insurrection!)

Microsoft's jaw-dropping nauseous greenwashing

Microsoft’s AI Push Imperils Climate Goal as Carbon Emissions Jump 30%

The company’s goal to be carbon negative by 2030 is harder to reach, but President Brad Smith says the good AI can do for the world will outweigh its environmental impact.
https://revealnews.org/article/what-california-can-learn-from-saudi-arabias-water-mystery/

Ah, Brad, Brad, pull the other one, fella. Maybe for once in your life could you be honest? It's the good AI will do your stock price. That's all you care about.

Also, the chair we sold you is taking pictures of your butt. No worries though, it's only to train better chairs.

"ChatGPT consumes a lot of energy in the process, up to 25 times more than a Google search. Additionally, a lot of water is also used in cooling for the servers that run all that software. Per conversation of about 20 to 50 queries, half a litre of water evaporates – a small bottle, in other words."

AI is predicted to consume twice as much energy as the whole of France by 2030

Training GPT3, took 1,287 MWh (Megawatt hours) of electricity.

"What is needed and what are the basics? Who will decide? 🫣"

That's the real crux of it. I read and agree in part with many of Mr. McGovern's posts and boosts, but I disagree about AIs utility. Were I choosing, many other things would get cut before AI. Who chooses?

But many (most, really) of the individuals In the machines that comprise those corporations are also concerned, environmentally-minded, socially conscious people. I don't want to count them out. I feel as though we are at a time of reckoning with capitalism's ethical failures that would occur even without the urgent pressure of the climatic doom we've sown. Wishful thinking maybe.

The sheets are folded by sprites when I'm not looking and I try not to inquire into their business too closely. People disappear that way.
