Microsoft's jaw-dropping nauseous greenwashing

Microsoftโ€™s AI Push Imperils Climate Goal as Carbon Emissions Jump 30%

The companyโ€™s goal to be carbon negative by 2030 is harder to reach, but President Brad Smith says the good AI can do for the world will outweigh its environmental impact.
https://revealnews.org/article/what-california-can-learn-from-saudi-arabias-water-mystery/

Ah, Brad, Brad, pull the other one, fella. Maybe for once in your life could you be honest? It's the good AI will do your stock price. That's all you care about.

"ChatGPT consumes a lot of energy in the process, up to 25 times more than a Google search. Additionally, a lot of water is also used in cooling for the servers that run all that software. Per conversation of about 20 to 50 queries, half a litre of water evaporates โ€“ a small bottle, in other words."

AI is predicted to consume twice as much energy as the whole of France by 2030

Training GPT3, took 1,287 MWh (Megawatt hours) of electricity.

"What is needed and what are the basics? Who will decide? ๐Ÿซฃ"

That's the real crux of it. I read and agree in part with many of Mr. McGovern's posts and boosts, but I disagree about AIs utility. Were I choosing, many other things would get cut before AI. Who chooses?

But many (most, really) of the individuals In the machines that comprise those corporations are also concerned, environmentally-minded, socially conscious people. I don't want to count them out. I feel as though we are at a time of reckoning with capitalism's ethical failures that would occur even without the urgent pressure of the climatic doom we've sown. Wishful thinking maybe.

Jake Tapper is in his comfort zone interviewing Republican Israeli war hawks. He confuses that with being a friend to Israel. I am so tired of him. Iโ€™ve been tired of him since the 1990s. It astonishes me when people confuse him with a good journalist.

Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar is not my favourite RPG, but itโ€™s probably one of the most memorable.

Before Ultima IV, every RPG I played was basically, โ€œHereโ€™s a bad guy, go kill him.โ€ But in Ultima IV, you can do terrible, amoral things. And not only that, youโ€™d get immediate gratification from it โ€“ only to realize much later in the game that doing terrible, amoral things was ultimately not worth it.

This is definitely a DOS game that I often re-visit.

To choose over due to age (or really, anything) would be folly.

But to think Biden's age is a political weakness is an honest opinion. He shouldn't have run. People want a younger president not simply from a mental and physical perspective, but from a perspective of generational zeitgeist.

The Dems have my vote. I hope next time they try to get my enthusiasm, too.

The Israel-Palestine situation is a clusterfuck. I don't have any deep insights to add to what more knowledgeable people are saying. I don't like that simply by being American I feel complicit, however diffusely, in either side murdering people.

BUT LET ME SAY THIS. If we plunge the U.S. into Russian-style autocracy because people decide to lay decades of intractable violence squarely on ... How will treat ? He would let erase Palestine, full stop.

The monkeys:

HumanServitor,

What I'm hearing is that in a month and half they got 2/11th of the way to spelling "Shakespeare" (S----s-----)

So I think you really need to scale up either the number of monkeys and computers or the duration of the experiment before you can say anything with certainty! ๐Ÿ˜

I'm tired of hearing about AI, to be honest. I never cared for it. I don't respect people who use generative AI, and I despise companies that sell out people's data to train it. Yes, people will lose jobs to it, but the world will not be better for it. It's just that consequences are rarely immediately apparent in such complex systems.

HumanServitor,
@HumanServitor@mastodon.social avatar

@Gargron

Maybe creating more effective spam and stealing digital art aren't all people are doing with AI.

Looks at users with making use of generative AI to give themselves speech/hearing/vision capabilities they didn't have before.

Maybe we shouldn't draw profound character judgements from a person's use of software.

I'm not sure I could, except for kid things like "Row Your Boat". I know plenty of lyrics but I can almost never remember them in the proper order or on demand.
