When I lived in England, in a meeting between people in the US and England, I had to explain that "tabling" something has the opposite meaning in both countries, and so I ended the comedic discussion that was going on. The other 4 words/phrases mentioned in the article, I wasn't aware of.

Interesting that the article doesn't mention "fanny" as being an opposite as well, at least in its physical location on the human body.

I never buy anything made by random Chinese companies any longer. There's a reason their stuff is so inexpensive. And, yeah, I had to be burned a few times before I learned this.

@jeff Same here, except for items I'm confident will not be counterfeit. For electronics, I always buy, if I can, directly from the manufacturer. Amazon, to me as well, doesn't seem much concerned about counterfeits.

I'm new and excited to be here? I've been looking for ways to be connected and have services available, but keep privacy and security top of mind. My efforts have been focused on my home network, but I'm starting to broaden that to social media. I've always had a beef with SM and have hated how irrelevant it can be.

Enter Mastodon.

In many ways this is just an experiment, but it is one that I hope takes off and is, for me, successful.

A bit about me: I'm a nerd, pure and simple. I love Star Trek, reading (anything), science/tech, DnD (Monks for the win!), woodworking, and astronomy. I'm currently looking for ways to combine hobbies (like building a 3d-printed & wood framed telescope).

I am a former member of a cult...long story. and am in a lengthy process of discovering...we...me.

@nek I'm in no way an expert, but my issue with Passkeys is the unreliability in the implementation and that they're saved in silo vaults.

Twice now, I tried using a Passkey on my Pixel, only to get the message that "something went wrong." This is scary. It's a good thing I don't depend only on passkeys then. A fallback is necessary.

I think keeping passkeys in Google or Apple, etc., is a mistake, as they don't share them. I use 1Password for cross-platform availability, but now must have it installed wherever I want to use it.

Hence, I'm forced to fall back to TOTP and physical keys (Yubico).

Physical keys can get lost or forgotten, so they are not ideal. TOTP is said not to be as secure as passkeys and physical keys but are needed for a reliable fallback.

TOTP then is the weakest link in my security chain, hence passkeys, for me, are not the answer since given my setup, regardless of my using them, I'm no more secure than I am just using TOTP.
