@enobacon No, it appears pretty grim from my angle too. :/

Me: I'm gonna volunteer more this year!

Org: you must enable javascript to view our site

Org: location of volunteer event is secret. You have to RSVP to get the location

Org: In order to RSVP you must create an account on this 3rd party website.

Damn, I just wanted to help pull some invasive weeds at the park. What the hell.

work party Saturday 9am "planting native plants that provide food and habitat for our native critters"

Karstan,
@Karstan@urbanists.social avatar

@enobacon What's with requiring folks to set up an account on a 3rd party website just to volunteer?

Karstan,
@Karstan@urbanists.social avatar

@enobacon That site won't load without enabling javascript 😁 so I'll pass.

Between orgs like this and the ones who's only active web presence is a private FB page and a barely monitored email address (coughcough looking at you Food Not Bombs coughcough), it's increasingly difficult to volunteer in this damn city.

Whatever, I'll just go down to the park with a trashbag and pull ivy or something.

Karstan,
@Karstan@urbanists.social avatar

@enobacon Already done! :) In retrospect I could have been a bit more... positive. But dang, it shouldn't be this complicated.

I've considered doing some guerilla maintenance in the past. There are some sections of trails by me that are in desperate need. But we all know how well the city reacts to folks trying to fix things on their own in this damn place.

I'm so glad Carmen Rubio is running for Mayor of for two reasons: 1) the alternatives are terrible and 2) most importantly, it's time for a woman to be in charge of this city. Men have had their chance for the past 16 years (no offense to my dudes out there) & I don't think we can say we're better for it.

https://www.portlandmercury.com/news/2024/01/09/46971825/carmen-rubio-enters-2024-portland-mayors-race

Karstan,
@Karstan@urbanists.social avatar

@greendesignek @enobacon I agree that she's less terrible than the other two. But I've generally been unimpressed with her on the council. Perhaps it's just the bias of the media covering for her, but I've never seen her speak out against the more draconian actions of her fellow councilmembers unless at least one other has already spoken out.

Hey weather nerds. I want an outdoor weather station. Or at the very least an outdoor thermometer. Preferably something durable and not something made of cheap plastic. Also no "wi-fi enabled" devices. Suggestions?

Just got an email from a recruiter basically saying "You have the kind of experience we're looking for but we only want to pay mid-level salary. Are you interested?"

No. No I am not.

Look at this absolutely gorgeous vintage propane stove I got yesterday at an estate sale!! It was still in it's original box!! If this was ever used, it was only used once or twice.

The same box now opened, showing a grill, two vk tage propane tanks, and fold-in wings that can be opened to prop the lid open and provide a windscreen. There are pieces of cardboard still under the grill from it's original packaging

Karstan,
@Karstan@urbanists.social avatar

@enobacon the burners are immaculate! The propane connections appear to be identical to the ones on modern propane cylinders.

Blowing your leaves into the street (or hiring someone to do it) is a Class C Misdemeanor offense in , especially leaving them in lanes.

"detracts from the natural cleanliness or safety of property by intentionally
a) Discarding or depositing any rubbish, trash, garbage, debris ... upon any public way or ..."

https://oregon.public.law/statutes/ors_164.805

Karstan,
@Karstan@urbanists.social avatar

@enobacon Fun fact! I've seen this law used to prosecute "undesirables" for spitting in the street.

Karstan,
@Karstan@urbanists.social avatar

@enobacon Report the emmereffer!

I didn't mean to detract from your point. It's just a memorable law for me. My very first case back when I was an attorney was defending a protestor who was accused of violating this law when she spit in the gutter while at a protest. I've got like, an uncontrollable urge to point this out every time I see it mentioned.

Karstan,
@Karstan@urbanists.social avatar

@enobacon It was about a cop being pissed off that he was being "disrespected." He thought the spitting was about him and not the fact my client had a cold and was hocking a loogie. So he arrested her and found a law that he thought fit. The DA knew it was a trumped up charge and reduced it to a violation so we couldn't take it to jury trial.

Throwing this out to Masto: How hard is it to swap over parts to a new frame? My frame shit the bed yesterday.

Regardless of build quality, if I do this it will go to my shop for a tune-up.

Karstan,
@Karstan@urbanists.social avatar

@Dseitz With the proper tools and a compatible frame? Fairly easy. However, you'd need specialized tools for thr bottom bracket and potentially other parts and there are many different standards for frames/parts.

Was thinking about joining a group bike ride today to kick off 2024. But the only two that I could find in Portland? One costs $40 to join, and the other was described as "riding around rich neigborhoods and blasting EDM."

So I guess I'll be doing my typical solo ride 🙂🚲

I'm trying to figure out when there's gonna break in the rain to make my bike trip to the grocery store less damp. My weather app is telling me that it's not raining outside. But it is most definitely raining outside. 😡🌧️

Karstan, (edited )
@Karstan@urbanists.social avatar

@enobacon "Weather," an open source app from F-droid. It pulls the data straight from the national weather service so I don't know why it's wrong so often.

Edit: scratch that. Everything I just said is wrong. Not sure where this app came from?? Privacy friendly weather app that pulls from OpenWeatherMap

What's the worst thing that your boss has ever done? Mines would probably be the time I worked for a law firm and the owner wanted us to clear out the upstairs of a dusty ass building that he owned to look scrounge for office supplies (literally not in my job description at all) and as we're clearing things out he tells us that they're going to come back and clean up the asbestos in a few days.

Karstan,
@Karstan@urbanists.social avatar

@BlackAzizAnansi I worked as a on-site apartment manager. Boss fired me (which included an eviction) and then expected me to continue working for the rest of the month. When I didn't do so (because I'd been fired), he contested my unemployment benefits.

@Karstan@urbanists.social avatar

Oh neat! Not only does Enlighten solar kind of suck (it requires an internet connection to work so they can steal/sell your info), they literally just sold my email address. (Well, that or they were hacked.) I use SimpleLogin for email aliases and the one I used for Enlighten is starting to get spam. 😡

Karstan,

@enobacon I was thinking about this the other day while I was out and about. Obviously it won't work on ice. But did you get a chance to test it out when the snow was still powder?

Karstan,
@Karstan@urbanists.social avatar

@enobacon Yeah, I was thinking along those lines. I was wondering what a little plow attachment might look like but I'm not sure it would work for 2 wheels?
