@purplepadma I get it and I empathize. My dog was the best, until I was sad, hurt, or sick, and then he would totally abandon me and spend his time in another room. I guess I admired that he maintained firm boundaries lol!

@RickiTarr I live on an island. How to get here? Boat. Plane. I once asked a tourist couple how they arrived. ‘We took the tunnel.’ There is no tunnel but they were adamant. They had arrived at the mainland ferry terminal—yes, ‘ferry’ on all the signs, a huge ferry prominent in its berth—and insisted that, from that point, they had continued via tunnel under the sea. My guess: they imagined it was a Chunnel situation & had stayed in their car on the windowless lower vehicle deck!

So, there is a group of people on Mastodon that I have a lot of trouble relating to and understanding, that I somewhat lovingly call "The Misanthropes". They do a few things that boggle my mind a bit. The first is constantly announcing how they don't like humanity, and don't really want to be around people, which is okay, I guess, I can understand that, except you're doing it on SOCIAL media. If you just want to read articles, and look at pictures there are tons of better sources than social media, so why are you here? If you really hate all of humanity so much, you have the option in this one area to avoid it completely, why don't you?

Another thing is no matter what question I ask or how innocuous it is, someone will question the validity of why I'm asking it or the entire foundation of the question. So, why?! If you read a question and it doesn't apply to you or it doesn't interest you, don't interact with it, these aren't compulsory. Or I will ask What someone's favorite color is, and someone will say purple, they will tell that person that purple is traditionally the color of royalty, and ask them Why they are supporting the Monarchy, or if someone says yellow, they will let them know that yellow is hideous, and they shouldn't like it. Most of my questions are opinion or experience based, so the answer doesn't really matter, I am just trying to learn what people are like. What do you get out of making other people feel bad about themselves over basically unimportant things? Does it make you feel better about yourself or superior in some way? I really want to understand. Overall, most people are interesting and pleasant and just want to connect, what do you want?

@RickiTarr A former lifelong friend—now an anti-vax, crypto-loving, prepper conspiracist who recently dumped me for living in ‘clown world’ like a chump—admitted to trolling as an actual hobby. She’d make a drink after dinner, and spend hours happily replying to social media posts with the express intention of stirring shit up. Just a middle-aged, wealthy, white woman who found joy in making people mad or miserable, on purpose. I don’t miss her.

So, does anyone know anything about the band Mayapple Weather? They're a Canadian (probably, based on limited info I have) folk pop/rock act from the early '00s. I have an EP I downloaded decades ago to feature in a free download column for a paper I was writing for, and recently I found another song of theirs on Bandcamp, as part of a compilation, also from the same era (that's how I determined they were most likely Canadian).

Why do so many desert-dwelling ants from the southern areas in Africa have fuzzy gasters? These are basically very similar to carpenter ants from other parts of the world, in most places there is a species of Camponotus this size, often black with majors and big colonies, but in the desert they get so lovely with their fuzzy bums.

These ants are common in South Africa. Camponotus fulvopilosus queen and a worker holding a pupae. These ants are a dark matte black with light brown fur on their gasters.

I've been kicking around pitching an idea for a course, tentatively titled “Introduction to Legal Writing for Public Consumption."

I'd like to marshal the fedihive mind and borrow the brains of folks much smarter and more experience than I -- does that sound like a law school course, or a journalism school course?

My experience of law school was that sort of writing wasn't even considered. Does that make this idea a feature or a bug?
