I am not really sure about how much I shared on the internet. So. I need your help. Can you tell me the place I was born, using my data that might show up at weird places?

Larvitz,
@Larvitz@burningboard.net avatar

@jwildeboer According to https://www.genealogieonline.nl/en/bismeijer-family/I64599.php you were born in Zwartsluis, Ov, The Netherlands (I don't know that website or how accurate their data is)

@jwildeboer One more (last) guess from some even less reputable source, is there a chace it's Zevenaar ?

Das Ergebnis verwundert mich so gar nicht.

Die Partei in der ich einst Mitglied war auf Platz 1 und die ganz unten.

Würde sagen das Ergebnis passt ganz gut.

I need a new place for my domains/DNS. is becoming too expensive. Where would you move your domains when you want to be sure it is in the EU and allows for full control of even weird DNS records, ideally by just uploading a BIND zone file? No discussions, please. Just suggestions. I think that 10-15€ per domain/year should be the max.

UPDATE: made my decision, domains are moving.

Larvitz,
@Larvitz@burningboard.net avatar

@jwildeboer I have all my domains at internetbs.net which is currently 11.34€ for a .com

They offer all the things, I had on my checklist:

  • I can specify custom DNS servers with DNSKEY/DNSSEC records

  • Decent payment options

  • Whois privacy by default for no additional charge

When all big tech companies decide to go super villain, how much of your “identity” and “content” do you think still belongs to you?

Notice I said “when” and not “if”

Larvitz,
@Larvitz@burningboard.net avatar

@ayo I self host almost anything by now and use free software where possible. E-mail, calendar, contacts, bookmark sync, social media (mastodon) and much more. It’s definitely some work but I have control over my data and it’s my own responsibility to keep it safe. And container technologies made parts of self hosting easier and less time consuming in recent years.

Which one is the best (GNU) distribution?

Larvitz,
@Larvitz@burningboard.net avatar

@darth depends heavily on the intended use 😅

@Larvitz@burningboard.net avatar

@darth Awesome. Didn't know you had a yt channel. You now have a new subscriber 🙂

Larvitz,
@Larvitz@burningboard.net avatar

@darth I watched your video and here is my take on distributions:

Newcommers/Beginners: Ubuntu or Manjaro
Enthusiasts: Fedora or Arch Linux
Servers: CentOS Stream or Debian
Containers: UBI or Alpine

I personally use Fedora on my development Notebook, Arch on my gaming rig and CentOS Stream 9 on my CoLocation servers.

Larvitz,
@Larvitz@burningboard.net avatar

@darth I went all-debian for many years (2011-2021) but then I started working for a company with a slight preference for "headwear" and due to collegues influence and personal curiosity, decided to give Fedora and CentOS Stream a try and really like the experience so far.

Larvitz,
@Larvitz@burningboard.net avatar

@darth IMHO, RHEL shines on a server but Fedora is the modern equivilant on a desktop computer (not everyone probably approves that but that is my personal experience). I currently run Fedora 40 KDE/Plasma on my Thinkpad that I use for Python development and it's absolutely a breeze

Larvitz,
@Larvitz@burningboard.net avatar

It's so sad to see popular Fedi accounts specifically made to help new users with Fedi nuances, spread fear, uncertainty, and doubt regarding Threads federation.

Someone who is supposed to foster goodwill across Fedi is actively engaging in fracturing it....🤦‍♂️🤬

Hello 40 ! :)
Finally upgraded my last machine (and my daily driver) to a release distro.

is a very great experience even in it's current pre-release state. Many thanks to all of the folks at Fedora for making this awesome distribution! :fedora:

One of the KDE Plasma features I use almost in daily basis is the MouseMark.

Go to your settings, in Desktop Effects, Enable the MouseMark (you can change the settings of it in the button in front of it). Then press Meta+Shift and move your mouse to doodle, or press and release Meta+Shift+Ctrl to define beginning and end of an arrow (it will draw the rest.

Interestingly enough, it have been in Plasma for the past 16 years:

The webpage of kde.org in Firefox tab, on which I have drawn two red arrows pointing at the "Plasma" word, and hand-drawn a check mark over "for Linux".

Awesome feature, however, the arror part doesn't work for me. When I press Meta+Shift+Ctrl and move the mouse, it looks like this:

Larvitz,
@Larvitz@burningboard.net avatar

@Mehrad @kde @kde Doesn't really work for me. Sometimes, a random arror appears that point nowhere near the mouse cursor position and most of the times, just nothing happens. 🙁

@Mehrad @kde @kde On my Desktop computer, running Arch Linux with Plasma 6.0.0, it works correctly. On my laptop with Fedora 39 and Plasma 5.27.10, it is bugged and doesn't work properly (Both running under Wayland).

Anyway, a great feature! Thank you very much for pointing it out.
