One of the most frustrating and discouraging parts of working on open source software is you get a bunch of people saying, “X is the most important thing to work on. You only work on Y, you never listen to your users”. So you focus on X and you work really hard and you make meaningful progress on making X better and you release it and a bunch of people go “Z is the most important thing to work on. You only ever do X. You never listen to your users”. And you do this forever
@danirabbit I wouldn't know the details of this, but I have used you're work. It's the smoothest experience among distros out there. And the most innovative.
@danirabbit I know this is a sacrilegious question, but do you think you'd be better off working a corporate gig? Or do you think you are simply incapable of letting go of your passions?
@arstechnica What the fuck are they not ticked about? They are like the Fun Nazis. 'Zis is ze only way you shall have fun! How Dare You! How Dare you have fun your way? You will only have fun within ze boundaries we have set!'
I have to admit that "Starman" (1984), is a wonderfully sweet little film about a benevolent alien who comes to Earth, takes human form, and is hunted by authorities. I have a soft spot for the film, even though the reality is that any aliens that are actually out there (if any) are far more likely to exterminate us, enslave us, or (at best) treat us as pets if they ever show up here.
@lauren I see so many similarities between the alien of Starman and the father of Starlord from the Guardians of the Galaxy. I wonder if there is a direct connection.
In this week's #Linux and #OpenSource news video, we have a plan to add support for HDR and Variable Refresh Rate on Linux, chips from AMD that surpass Apple Silicon, and more dominant position abuse from Microsoft, plus updates on #LinuxMint 21.2, some new #GNOME apps, progress on #KDE Plasma 6, and more!
And also, I'm trying to replace the "walls of scrolling text" with more focused snippets so it's a bit more entertaining to watch! Let me know what you think!
@danirabbit Jeeesus Christ! What a horrifying, bigoted and hateful thing to say to your grandchild just because you are confused and maybe scared?
If that ever happened to me I'd have to take multiple deep breaths and remember to forgive people multiple times before I could face that person again.
Oftentimes trans folks are challenged to defend how we really know what our gender is and we’re held to a high standard of having deconstructed gender and in having an ability to articulate and defend it. So here’s a thought experiment for cis folks:
How do you know that you’re really the gender you say you are? Can you articulate why you are your assigned gender at birth? At what age did you know? How long did you have to spend identifying as your gender before you were sure it was right?
@danirabbit My gender is Clint Eastwood's cowboy characters. I knew this when I was a kid and watched the movies with my dad. I sometimes also identify as Keanu Reeves' Neo from Matrix.
@rikefranke WTF? Might as well go slap the Polish Prime Minister for good measure incase that statement didn't already piss the poles off. What, did he a short position on EU shares?
My brain must have fallen out of my head while making dinner tonight. My broccoli was over cooked, my chicken was undercooked, my pasta sauce was soupy. Just awful, inedible. Apparently a sign from the gods to order out
@zorangrbic The erronious assumption is that humans are critical components of the economy. It's merely a collection of entities engaging in trade of goods and services.
Today its comprised of human corporations and consumers, tomorrow it will be AI corporations and consumers.
As Yuval Noah Harrari says, there is something worse than being subjugated and exploited, to be left out and excluded.
Feelin’ myself in this random selfie I took while walking haha. I’m in this like awkward phase where I don’t recognize myself in my old photos but I’m also like in awe still that I get to look like this. I get to be a girl. Fuck yeah science bitch
@boilingsteam What would be the games that the japanese audience would want to play on it? VNs don't really tax the system but I suppose there are no other ways to play them on the go. DMC? The popping home made games on the steam store?
“"If we go on the offensive this year and retake our land, then we'll win," he replies. "But, if that doesn't happen, then we don't have the resources for the war to go on for another five to ten years."
I've scheduled an open space to discuss maintainer burnout, how to survive it, and maybe how to prevent it. It's something I struggle with privately, and I don't have the answers, but I hope sharing experiences helps. Sunday, 10am, room 250C @PyConUS#PyConUS
