America: You need to have health insurance!

Me: Cool, that makes sense, but it's going to cover my whole body, right?

America: Depends, do you use your teeth and eyes?

MargaretSefton,
@MargaretSefton@writing.exchange avatar

@RickiTarr I remember calling my doctor because I had fallen down a flight of stairs. In order to assign a code for the purpose of insurance, the admin asked: Well, what part of you hurts? I said: I fell down the stairs. All of me hurts. Well, could you tell me what part? My whole body, my whole body hurts. etc, ad nauseum.

What kind of high-school experience did you have? Were you in a clique? Were you popular, unpopular, the coolest kid in your Homeschool? Did you have a sweet jean jacket with patches, or maybe a leather vest? Were you an evil villain or a Mary Sue?

MargaretSefton,
@MargaretSefton@writing.exchange avatar

@RickiTarr I did achievement-oriented things, and ergo was not popular. Most of the popular kids partied all day during school and one had an affair with her teacher. Sometimes teachers toked it up with students. I was clueless about these things, a goody two shoes, trying to please my impossible to please parents. It was lonely, but I did have a small set of friends. We did things together, which was nice. I wouldn't go back for anything.

I love when the public bathroom toliet is in a fully enclosed little room, so no one can look at my feet or peak through the cracks. Stay away you bathroom voyeurs!

@RickiTarr When my sister and I recently went to Buc'ee's and picked up a brisket taco for my Dad who is in SC, I told my sister I must have a Buc'ee's tchotchke. I am jealous of your stuffed Buc'ee but will work hard to rectify the situation. ❤️ A picture will be forthcoming.

If you would like an editor, be in touch. I've noticed there are people who self-publish longer works, as well as short stories and memoir pieces. I am a gentle person who would want you to feel good about what I say. I can give big picture thoughts or last-minute touch ups before you publish. I have taken some editing coursework with the University of Washington and the University of Chicago. I have a BA in Literature and an MFA in Fiction. I am open to a low flat fee based on ability to pay.

As a woman, receiving the command/wish to smile, however gently phrased and well-intended, feels like an overwhelming burden. It also reminds me of performing for the family business---the ministry. So, let's just say, I don't want anyone messing with my resting face. lols.

"I want you to think about how you would react if another man asked you to smile, especially if you didn't want to. Besides, wouldn't you want a woman to smile at you because she wants to?"

La Llorona is a popular ghost story that is prominent on Día de los Muertos. Having drowned her own sons out of despair over an abusive, cheating husband, or neglecting them and so they drowned by accident, a woman named Maria, aka "La Llorona" --"the weeping woman"-- is forced to wander the Earth searching for her lost sons. La Llorona's siren-like wails are said to lure adults and children to their untimely deaths: “Mis hijos! Mis hijos! ¿Dónde están mis hijos?” (Britannica)

I published a short story to my dark fiction journal this morning, a story that was originally published with Quail Bell, a Canadian journal. (I am providing the friend link, no paywall.) If you are interested in publishing a dark fiction story, be it a horror story, a tale of unease, a ghost story, an original folk or fairy tale, please keep A Dark Wood in mind as a possible venue. 🖤 💀 #darkfiction #ghoststory #shortstory #writingcommunity

Every time I tell myself, "Ok, today is the last day I'll post to Medium for a while," I later find myself posting to Medium. A motivator is having started a dark fiction publication. I'm working to find contributors while posting example stories of my own. Cheers, everyone. If you know of someone who publishes dark fiction, please send them my way. 🖤 https://medium.com/a-dark-wood/unease-in-muck-city-a-story-and-an-invitation-05b7f163114c?source=friends_link&sk=838ee2eda25aef566991805813a1dc56

Up late at night, hoping sleep will call for me. I suggested edits on a story and am reading a book I purchased from Thrift Books. I read Alice McDermott's Charming Billy for a book club moons ago and loved it. Now I am reading her book The Ninth Hour.

I've learned from experience that death and tragedy do not change the dynamics of a family system entrenched in narcissism and conservative religious beliefs. As much as I want the Hallmark movie ending, I do not hold illusions. Sometimes I think Hollywood does us no favors. Then again, we have darker literature and movies which deal with certain realities often swept away by those in a triumphant religion. It feels good to have access to cultural product that is more realistic.

Jamaican Easter Traditions:

In the past, it was traditional to set egg white in a glass cup on Holy Thursday evening. On Good Friday morning, predictions would be made based on the pattern or shape of the egg white. For example, a ship meant travel.

We used to have a dogwood tree in our yard in South Carolina where my father had been a pastor. When I asked him about it a couple of weeks ago when my sister and I went to visit, he said the cross had been made of dogwood. Here's a little more about the legend, some of which he conveyed to us. I liked reading about Jamaican traditions. (One of my fave cakes to make was Hummingbird cake--Jamaican I believe?)

We swam with water moccasins, rippled surfaces with stones, dreamt under blue skied blankets, rocked to wave rhythms slapping undersides of boats like persistent mothers, their concerns a muffled backdrop to bugs, the feel of silt, a blade of grass, a cloud, a song, a taunt, the flesh of fruit.
