I love the covid-aware community, but goddamn if I am not bored to tears from hearing about how few people y'all saw wearing masks at the grocery store.

It's been this way for years now. We know! We get it!

The question is, what are we doing about it?

@longcovid @novid

Njord,
@Njord@peoplemaking.games avatar

@pixplz @longcovid @novid

I think masking in public is the best thing that we can do.

My mother resumed masking, after she saw a handful of people wearing masks at the grocery store, for example. So many people seem to decide whether to mask or not based on social cues instead of science

The easiest question to answer is, "Should I be wearing a mask right now?", because if the question even occurs to you, the answer is always an emphatic yes!

So, this n95 mask is expensive, even with the coupon... but it is insanely breathable and comfortable, and mark nerd had recommended it after his fit tests, and it did great on them. Im going to try with my pickier family to get them to wear them. This is my new favorite BUT I will probably only wear it in certain situations because it is more expensive. I so rewear them though, 48 hours between each use til they wear out. https://www.globalindustrial.com/p/4800-4800n95-series-airwave-n95-particulate-respirator-ov-ozone-relief-m-l-8-box

Can’t wait for the “actually LLMs are a worthless scam” articles in 2025 and all the people that pretend they never fell for it

Njord,
@Njord@peoplemaking.games avatar

@thomasfuchs I used an llm to do a rough draft of my cv, and it really showed what they can and can't do.

It wrote a pretty serviceable cv, and most of it only needed very light editing, except for the part where it wrote about my career as a famous yachter, despite the fact that I haven't ever been on a yacht, much less been part of a champion yacht crew.

So, yeah LLMs can write a decent rough draft of formulaic writing. They also make horrible errors on a regular basis, so they always need their work checked before using it.

Naturally, all they hype claims that they can do all sorts of things that they obviously can't, because that's how you get investment money, sadly.

It just amazes me that people keep expecting me to fly all over the place for conferences and seminar lectures. I've gotten uninvited to 2 conferences in the last couple weeks by politely asking if I could give the invited talk remotely instead. This is dumb, we need to change.

Njord,
@Njord@peoplemaking.games avatar

@sundogplanets Conferences and conventions are just pure madness right now. The CDC's own conference had a 13% infection rate, and each infection has between a 7.5% and 41% chance of giving the person long covid, with 1/4 of long covid cases being SEVERE ( on par with terminal cancer or a major stroke in terms of disability.)

So, yeah in person conference attendance is, at best a .25% chance of being fully disabled. That makes it less safe than activities such as base jumping, bull riding, and mountain climbing.

Njord,
@Njord@peoplemaking.games avatar

@sundogplanets You're welcome. The CDC website has all sorts of great data hidden in plain sight in dusty corners.

Does any one know if any studies were done with multiple doses of any of the Omicron vaccines?

I'm curious, since it took 2 (and later 3) shots to provide > 90% protection from infection, back when vaccination provided that level of protection.

I think I'm just going to start offering minimizers like $500 if they can prove to me, with primary sources, that I'm being silly for wearing my mask. It forces them to look into the science and they'll never get my money.

@upol The Vitlight has the same type of accuracy and sensor, but isn't as feature rich ( no wireless, no app, smaller battery, etc.)

It also costs a lot less.

The more I read about gut stuff, the more I have no patience for the fatphobic people who claim Americans are fat and it’s all their fault. (Also fatphobia is bad pls don’t be like that)

There is something very seriously weird with the food supply in this country. In this study, the gut microbiome of Hmong immigrants changes almost immediately upon moving to the US.

Njord,

@skinnylatte IME there's definitely a difference in the food supply in the EU vs US.

The meats and veggies and fruits seem fresher and more flavorful. And, like a lot of Americanswho move abroad, I lost weight with relative ease. About 10kg in my first year without significant other lifestyle changes, and, in fact, less excercise
