Ansel Elgort still hasn't texted me back...
A coming of age movie that reminds me of that line in The Virgin Suicides that goes something like, "Obviously doctor, you've never been a 13-year old girl".
Thanks to this I now know exactly what it's like to be a 16-year old white girl played by a (then) 21-year old actress.

#Watching THE HOST

Bong Joon Ho's monster movie based on a true story shows the true dangers of owning a food stand so near to the water.
Funny and thrilling, it's everything you'd ever want from a Korean monster #movie and even some things you don't like smarmy white people doing nefarious things.
One of the best #movies of the aughties and as a professional archer*, I'm glad to see my sport represented.
Host a watch party and see this again and make the mhost of your time alone. Maybe prepare yourself some thost.

PLEASE DON'T DESTROY THE TREASURE OF FOGGY MOUNTAIN

You laugh more than you think you will despite yourself.
On the upper half of full length movies from SNL cast members and alums. Some scenes feel like sketches that needed one more polish but there are enough hits to win you over.
A lot of dead spots and a lot of times you can't help yourself but chuckle at the stupidity.
If the the Please Don't Destroy guys never make another movie...on Peacock at least there will always be Three Sad Virgins.

I admit when it comes to knowledge of Peter Straub's work, I am lacking. I know of him thanks to his collaborations with Stephen King (The Talisman, Black House). When Straub passed away last Sept, I felt I had missed something by not enjoying his writing while he was still on this earth.

Many said at the time that Shadowland is his best work. I'm reading it now. Slow going, but good so far.

#Watching WELCOME TO MARWEN

One of those movies that's been on my watchlist forever but just now choosing to see it.
The real story behind the movie is compelling enough to make this watchable, even if it is directed for maximum schmaltz by Robert Zemeckis...the director of Forrest Gump. rolls eyes
The acting is subtle. Everything is on Afterschool Special mode to the nth.
A relatively quite performance by Steve Carell keeps everything grounded until it isn't.
Female characters literally reduced to dolls.
Worth a watch. Once. So much syrup going down but you'll get through it.

DUMB MONEY

Crowd pleasing Fuck-the-Man dramedy based on true events but sanitized for easy to root for good guys and one-dimensional villains.
Wasn't that long ago that the Gamestop frenzy happened so some of it may still be fresh in memories, but the film efficiently navigates the basics while making finance seem sexy.
Some facts fudged for drama.
Pete Davidson shows up and plays himself.
Get roused. Get angry. But some stock. Sell some stock. Anything but dumb.

PITCH BLACK

My favorite of the three character Vin Diesel plays that really just Vin Diesel...but with GOGGLES!
Takes us about a year before he began droning on for a generation about "FA-MUH-LEEEE".
Some very tense moments and creature design, even if the premise makes no sense (a creature that evolves to live in the dark on a planet with three suns that has an eclipses every 22 years? Sure...)
Keith David is here and you still wonder if MacReady is the one infected.
Still waiting for the Pitch Black Pitch Perfect crossover event.

IT'S A WONDERFUL KNIFE

As someone who's not a fan of Christmas (if you had my name you'd hate it too) this put me in the mid-November Christmas spirit because onscreen people died.
A comedy that leans into the comedy. Barely over 80 minutes long so it's not that much of an investment.
Justin Long doing another version of his J-Lo sleazebags, though his capped teeth are the scariest things in the movie.
You wish it were a lot scarier than is. Murder + Christmas = Wonderful.

NYAD

The story is amazing...

The itself a generic sports movie in which every scene fits into the Triumphant Sports Genre template, but the two hours just breeze by.
It also helps to have two powerhouses like Annette Bening and Jodie Foster as they carry you through all the clichés.
Since you know how it ends but you might not know the journey to the end Nyad is compelling enough even if it feels like you're hitting screenplay beats (not...the SHARK!).
A good movie of an incredible accomplishment. Diana Nyad swims 100 miles while we sit on our couch and watch it on Netflix.
