HALLOWEEN ENDS

As far as the end of a saga goes, Ends is pretty okay. Nothing that bloodies your pants.
Then I remembered I've seen the limp Hellraiser reboot and the derivative Smile and Halloween Ends is at least as watchable as those two.
H20 still has the best ending but with managed expectations, this is completely adequate.

THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER

Finally getting around to finishing this as I didn't feel like binging due to the repetitive structure to the episodes (ANOTHER Usher dead, again?).
Haunting of Hill House is still my favorite Flanagan limited series.
Like this more than Midnight Mass because of the Poe callbacks and the very creative kills.
Unfortunately, like Midnight Mass, there are narrative-killing monologues and exposition dumps. You can hear a character (usually Bruce Greenwood) start a navel-gazer, call DoorDash and by the time the Very Important Monologue finishes, your food will be there.
You feel like you should be taking notes like you'll be tested on this later. Every performer is well cast, especially an against-type Carla Gugino. Mark Hamill gives good growl.
8 episodes where you could have done 6 if it weren't for the speechifying.
Took it long enough to fall.

EILEEN

Thomasin McKenzie's Baw-Stun accent is just like Daniel Craig's Mexican accent in Glass Onion.

MAY DECEMBER

Julianne Moore way moore, um, more unhinged than when she was playing Carrie's mom.
I got more involved with Natalie Portman reading a letter than sitting through the entire season of Ridley Scott's Napoleon.
Todd Haynes lifting the rock and watching the cockroaches scatter in the seemingly mundane. A color blasted Persona with a soap opera score.
Safe is still my favorite Haynes/Julianne Moore collaboration. May December is a close second.

LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND

A wonderfully tense bottle filled with photogenic stars.
Mahershala Ali and Julia Roberts used to laugh at Ethan Hawke when they'd play the "Which one of Us Has an Oscar?" game and Hawke would always come up empty. Even on set visitor Julie Delpy had a field day laughing and pointing at him. Seems unnecessarily mean.

CANDY CANE LANE

Requisite Eddie Murphy family : Christmas Edition.
With a two hour running time, it tests your patience with subplots that should have been jettisoned and sequences that should have been trimmed but then you remember you're watching a Christmas movie and you don't care about things like that but at least it's not one of those Stepford White People Hallmark .
From the director of Boomerang.
The Amazon corporation teaches you the true meaning of Christmas!!!

THE BLOB

This B-movie classic shows us the dangers of being attacked by the world's largest serving of cherry pie filling.
There's nothing particularly scary about any of this, though you can't help but smile at everything you see on screen.
were 80 cents a ticket. Wow.
This is the whitest town I have ever seen. I thought I saw a black person during the scene where everyone runs out of the theater but I couldn't be sure. Maybe that was Mayor Goldie Wilson's aunt or something.
Watch it...if you dare.

SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS

Martin McDonagh's crime is entertainingly breezy and easy enough to forget after it ends. A-list looks like they're enjoying themselves chewing on grindhouse dialogue and so does the audience. A Guy Ritchie if he wasn't a hack. My favorite psychopath is #4.

PAINT

A minor masterclass in deadpan humor.
Thought this was a Bob Ross biopic but after the first couple of jokes I realized this was...something else.
Far from perfect as, other than Wilson's Carl, no other character rises above the level of sketch and you may not be into this kind of humor.
A bunch of comedic actors don't do much but at least everyone gets one good line or reaction.
A perfect change of pace for when you want something off center.

THANKSGIVING

I like this more than I like this actual holiday.
Wonderfully mean spirited and with enough gory kills to get you through a middling second act.
The movie's best sequence is its first and there's a drop-off intensity after but nothing that should dampen your enjoyment of watching people getting killed with carving tools.
Eli Roth's most unsettling movie since he did that kid's film with Cate Blanchett and Jack Black that I never even finished. shudder
Gets you into the holiday spirit. Give thanks for something like this released in November amidst Oscar bait and Hunger Games movies.
Patrick Dempsey's clam chowder accent sounds like me doing my Judi Dench accent from J. Edgar.
