Question for @histodons In literature there is often reference to a character having £1000/yr or whatever amount, presumably proceeds from an estate, rents etc, but how was it paid and how often? How did that economy actually work day to day.

If you read large print or dyslexic font paperback books do you prefer this to be indicated on the cover (say on a banner at the top) to help you identify the accommodation?

I compiled a quick poll based on different perspectives I've read.

@BZBrainz I am very interested in the results of this but don’t want to skew it by voting. Please share when the poll is over.

Beginner question for @knitting Everyone says knit a swatch for gauge but there are logistics to that. What do you do with the swatch? Is it included in the amount of yarn a project requires or do you frog the swatch and reuse it? Do you keep a record of yarn/needle gauges so you don’t have to keep doing it? As a beginner should I be getting 3 needle sizes for the project- the recommended ones and 1 bigger 1 smaller?

Incredibly I didn’t manage to take many photos during my trip to Vancouver, but what I did take is probably worth a few threads here.

(I’ve already briefly covered the unexpected “bus rapid transit” air-side at Calgary if you’re interested: https://mstdn.ca/@heliomass/111959889788562370)

@jfmezei @heliomass nope. Hwy 1 between Calgary and Banff is 4 lanes. 2 in each direction (mostly)

Rib stitch continues to baffle me entirely.

Tried at least 3 times on this one, at least twice k1p1 and once k4p4. None of them worked.

Is the aim to do the opposite stitch on each row, or the same stitch? So if stitch 1 row 1 is knit, is the stitch 1 row 2 supposed to be knit too or purl?
@knitting

A knitted rectangle in light blue and white thread.

PedalHoppy,
@PedalHoppy@mstdn.ca avatar

@alexisbushnell @knitting You are not alone. I had the same issue because knit the knits and purl the purls refers to the stitches as you are looking at them, not as you made them. Seed stitch is also lovely, pretend you meant it that way.

OMB I think the “new” signal on 42nd at 1st St e might be opening tomorrow!!! There was a new signal sign and lots of men working there right now. Thinking of taking the day off to just push the button and cross the road repeatedly.

PedalHoppy,
@PedalHoppy@mstdn.ca avatar

Nope. Not yet They are still working on it. That is okay. I w have more time to go push the button later in the week.

View across train tracks to a traffic light that is not yet operational. A little red bobcat is parked in the foreground in front of the train tracks.

PedalHoppy,
@PedalHoppy@mstdn.ca avatar

It’s working! The big square signal is for when there are trains and not a diagonal bike crossing like I hoped. Bikes are expected to double cross so a new delay on the route but at least a lower expectation of being run over.

    @heliomass @0li The first couple of years I kept a log of what the conditions were and what I wore and whether I was too hot or too cold. It took quite awhile but now I have a costume chart and I am good. I find that if I am not a little chilly at the start I am going to be too hot if the journey is any more than 15 mins.

    @bookstodon I just reviewed SO LATE IN THE DAY: STORIES OF MEN AND WOMEN, by Claire Keegan. This is a trio of stories which explores the relationships of men and women, and what they want from each other, in very engaging prose. Keegan has a lot to say, and her message is sharp-edged. The writing is top-notch.

    Cover image is almost a psychological test: a blood red sky, an uninterrupted line of buildings to the edge of the island, and a slice image of a ferry on the water. Is the ferry approaching the island, or moving away from it? I say it's moving away, because of the effect of the stories. You may glean something else.

    My favorite election night coverage of all time was 1997's Election Night Armistice, where Armando Ianucci and co put on three hours of live "alternative" coverage for the UK election with a ludicrous array of brilliant comedy devices

    My favourite detail: they recruited Handy Andy from DIY show Changing Rooms to make their infographics out of balsa wood

    Just found out the whole thing is on YouTube https://youtu.be/c-ZAIcjN0uM

    "Address terms" — the words we used to address people — are becoming more inclusive. For @TheConversationUS, linguist Scott F. Kiesling analyzes the different terms that are emerging, their origins ("dude" comes from the "doodle" part of "Yankee Doodle Dandy"), and why we can say gentlemen, but not ladies. Which do you think is the most inclusive address term for a group?

    I'm hearing people who have been regular blood donors in are no longer going in because the centres don't require masking. And donors don't feel safe. I'd like to hear more about this. Anyone else experiencing this?

    @AskPippa @Dragon A person I was with at Calgary film fest didn’t have a mask but wanted one (peer pressure works?) They went to the blood bank to see if they could get one and the donation centre DID NOT HAVE ANY MASKS

    @chad This question just popped into my head. How will Canada's Bill C-18 affect Mastodon? Is the platform small enough that it won't have to pay to share links to Canadian news outlets?

    PedalHoppy,
    @PedalHoppy@mstdn.ca avatar

    @jfmezei @chad I think that is mischaracterized. It’s not that the government doesn’t want them to carry it, they want them to pay a royalty. If they just agree to compensate there is no problem.

    Eek!

    Temporary accommodation is covered by the additional insurance of each owner, but only under certain circumstances such as:

    • a lawful evacuation order by the authorities (not the case yet here)
    • an insured event that caused the unit to be uninhabitable.

    I don't think finding the building was poorly built nearly a quarter-century ago, but not yet collapsed due to a storm, etc is something that is insured against.

    @jfmezei @Hiker_Scott Gotcha. Makes sense. There have been periods in AB boom bust cycle 1981 ~2000 and again 2007 where a not insignificant proportion of was built was pretty shoddy

    My latest video is now live on YouTube.

    After 5 years in the Netherlands we still love it here. Here are some examples of the great urbanism we've seen all over the country, even in towns and small cities.

    https://youtu.be/ztpcWUqVpIg

    PedalHoppy,
    @PedalHoppy@mstdn.ca avatar

    @notjustbikes I keep saying that small cities and towns in Canada can become this way very quickly if they only tried, and whoever does it will quickly set off a rush of copycats. Pedestrian only Banff (in summer) is now much more pleasant, Canmore is doing lots too, but I think that because they are tourist towns, people haven’t seen it for the improvement it is for the residents. A small town or city can keep a lot of its economy local if it can facilitate active transport for its citizens.
