What is your Mandela Effect Memory?

If you aren't sure what I'm talking about here's a reference:

QuietLurker,
@QuietLurker@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr Outside some of the popular ones like Jif/Jiffy, the Sinbad Shazam movie, or the Bernstein bears spelling, I swear the word “grok” came out of nowhere for me. I went decades never having seen or heard that word then sometime in the past several years I started to see it all the time on social media. Maybe it’s recently become popular, but to me it’s new and it weirds me out every time.

How much abuse do you think people should take?

Is the number zero?

Guess what, you're people.

QuietLurker,
@QuietLurker@mastodon.social avatar

@roknrol @RickiTarr Here’s a test for you. Does the abuser treat everyone in their life the same way? Their family, their boss, their friends, random people in public? Do they temper themselves in certain situations because they know it would be socially inappropriate to act that way? Most abusers are able to control themselves selectively if it is advantageous to them. Don’t give them a pass to treat you differently just because they’ve justified it to themselves.

    I’m not on beige because I had no idea I was doing when I chose so I went with the largest and figured this one won’t get shut down. However I’ve noticed I like a lot of the beige accounts that come across my feed. It has that silly, fun, old Twitter vibe to it (in a good way). Seems like you guys are having a cool party over there.

    Name a film you've seen that left you with the thought, "This is art." If you want to explain why it made you feel that way, that would be pretty cool of you.

    QuietLurker,
    @QuietLurker@mastodon.social avatar

    @RickiTarr The second act of Triangle of Sadness blew me away. I can’t say the whole film was a masterpiece for me, but that second act was perfection. The absurdity of it. The slow burn building of tension that culminates in the most glorious explosion of revolting chaos. For better or worse, it does not hold back. It gives you everything and destroys the characters you’ve probably grown to despise in the most humiliating of ways. I only wish act 3 was as strong.

    Anyone else wonder if first-class flyers have more risk than others? They board first and, during the boarding time when there's no/little air filtration, they sit there as the rest of passengers slowly cycle past, breathing on them the entire time. It might be tough to study, since these passengers also have money (which means more likely to WFH and have access to better healthcare), but I do wonder about things like this. Anyone else wonder the same?

    QuietLurker,
    @QuietLurker@mastodon.social avatar

    @augieray They’re also less cramped together though. I know it’s airborne, but I imagine you’d fair better if you didn’t have someone coughing directly on you the whole flight.

    QuietLurker,
    @QuietLurker@mastodon.social avatar

    @augieray That’s a good point. Perhaps it’s best to board last in that case unless they board from the center like on some international flights. In that case most would not go through the first class cabin.

    Via Griffin: It's up to 5: Secs of state in NB, CA, Wash state, GA, OR have all confirmed that election offices in their states have received threatening letters and said law enforcement — including the FBI — is investigating the matter.

    The envelope's contents in at least one instance included a page that said "END ELECTIONS NOW."

    The message also warned the recipient to "STOP GIVING POWER TO THE RIGHT THAT THEY DON'T HAVE," saying, "WE ARE IN CHARGE NOW AND THERE IS NO MORE NEED FOR THEM."

    @RickiTarr Is this why Costco bagels got so bad? They used to sell Einsteins and they were so good. Now they sell the Kirkland brand which are bready and very tough. My jaw hurts trying to eat them. I’ve been wondering how you screw up a bagel.

    Okay, what movie/TV show/ book has the best take on time travel and why?

    QuietLurker,
    @QuietLurker@mastodon.social avatar

    @RickiTarr Some of my favorites are already mentioned in the thread, but I’ll add The Time Traveler’s Wife and The Seven Lives of Lea. I like tragic romance and raw, honest human relationships. Both bring a more feminine view to time travel stories. Overall, Dark was probably the best in my opinion, and I’m still angry 1899 got cancelled as it had an intriguing premise.

    I think any time someone gives us unsolicited advice, we should get to ask them for money to fund it.

    You'd look better if you wore makeup

    Okay, you have to give me $500 to buy makeup.

    You should talk to a therapist.

    Cool, $300 a week, please!

    @RickiTarr As someone with a family member who likes to buy me “gifts” to “improve” things about myself unsolicited, I still don’t want it. Backhanded gifts are still insults.

    QuietLurker,
    @QuietLurker@mastodon.social avatar

    @misc Probably a viable alternative that functions in a similar way. In the year after the takeover I saw a lot of people announce they were leaving only to come back weeks or months later stating the alternatives just didn’t scratch the itch. I don’t think they’ll get what they want for various reasons, but EM might run it far enough into the ground that it’s virtually unusable and/or a paid subscription model. I won’t be going back, but I can’t say I don’t miss what it was.

    @augieray@mastodon.social avatar

    People when they talk privately to me (since they know I'm cautious): “Oh, we take it seriously and are being careful.”

    The same people on social media: “Here I am a crowded concert, crowded bar, crowded restaurant, at a conference, and traveling without a mask!”

    I can't tell if people tell me what they think I want to hear or self-deluding themselves into thinking that being safe a couple days a week means they can do high-risk activities the other couple days.

    QuietLurker,
    @QuietLurker@mastodon.social avatar

    @augieray People seem to logic themselves into doing what they want to do. I don’t know if they are lying to themselves or just me, but I’ve heard all types of silly justifications. I have more respect for someone just saying they don’t care or they’re okay taking the risk rather than claiming they’re cautious and then acting in a contradictory manner. It mostly bothers me because it seems like they are telling me they are cautious so I trust them into letting my guard down around them.

    YES.

    White House spokesman Andrew Bates responds to the Republican Speaker:

    "We absolutely reject the offensive accusation that gun crime is uniquely high in the United States because of Americans' 'hearts.' Gun crime is uniquely high in the United States because congressional Republicans have spent decades choosing the gun industry's lobbyists over the lives of innocent Americans."

    QuietLurker,
    @QuietLurker@mastodon.social avatar

    @GottaLaff Interesting how the people the speaker is referring to with “bad hearts” are people who almost exclusively share his ideology. What does that say about him?

    Something I appreciate more and more about the book publishing environment (writers, publishers, editors, bookstores, librarians, etc) is that no matter how corporate things get, the world is filled with people who actually care about the product being good. I mean they'll publish "Celebrity Has Life Advice For You" because they have to make money, but they really do push actual good stuff as hard as they can.

    I think the lack of this is what I've come to dislike about most social media.

    QuietLurker,
    @QuietLurker@mastodon.social avatar

    @ZachWeinersmith What I don’t understand is why those celebrity books make money in the first place. Who is buying these books and why? Are these all just mass purchased situations where the books are given out as freebies at events? In the era of social media and a decline in status in terms of what it means to be a celebrity, does anyone even care anymore? Especially when everyone knows most use ghost writers.

    Elon Musk and pronatalism: His fight with Grimes is more than media spectacle.

    The billionaire is now funding academic research—and revealing his interests in a future where women exist to have lots of babies.

    @QuietLurker@mastodon.social avatar

    @ppatel Choosing to have children is an act of hope. These people so concerned with birth rates make choices that hinders hope. You cannot make life on this planet so miserable and difficult for the majority, make the future as bleak as possible, and expect people to willingly, in mass, choose to subject more people to it. Attempting to force it will result in more people fighting it. They just want slaves/soldiers to serve them, but what good is that if the world is uninhabitable?
