I took a few Northern Lights photos tonight, Friday May 10th.

These were taken a bit north of Merced with Lake McClure in view.

Here's one, I'll share a few more when I get time to process them.

Thanks for looking:)

Well this is a sexy little number!

Hasselblad 907X camera body, paired with the CFV 100C back

100mp 1Tb SSD, 16 stops dynamic range

Not really in the market for a new mortgage with free camera but..

RCreamer,
@RCreamer@c.im avatar

@Rjdlandscapes I'd really like to have a camera with 16 solid bits per channel of dynamic range. I frequently encounter scenes which can't be properly sampled with my (supposed) 14 bits Sony body due to scene dynamic range. I hate using stacking and HDR, and often, neither of these can be used due to movement.

Here is a quick panorama I took at Lake McClure today, about 20 miles northeast of Merced, CA.

Have you caught Covid in situations where you were wearing a N95 mask?

(Difficult to know for sure, please just answer to the best of your knowledge)

Feel free to boost away!

@elduvelle I never caught it when wearing a KN-95 mask.

REMINDER: ChatGPT, Stable Diffusion, and other large trained neural models are NOT "artificial intelligence", they're just stochastic parrots, remixing and regurgitating what they've been fed. There's no theory-of-mind involved, so no understanding: there's no "there" there. (A real live parrot exhibits more intelligence than this.)

Don't call it AI; call it parrot-tech. That way you'll have a better perspective on what it can (and can't) do.

@cstross I think Peter Norvig shared a post/link on LinkedIn about 2 weeks ago which he claimed was true, albeit nascent, AGI.

@cliffwade yes, with> 20,000 followers. A lot of lessons there yet to be learned by current social networks.

What is your main browser (engine)?

Re-running a poll I saw on Mastodon a while ago, before various migrations. Just collecting numbers, not seeking advice or anything. Please boost for reach.

@isagalaev thinking of switching to Firefox nowadays.

If anyone is interested, I included another GIOMAS plot which shows the extended time series of global sea ice volume (all months together from January 1979 to July 2023).

I'll update it once per month at https://zacklabe.com/global-sea-ice-extent-conc/

RCreamer,
@RCreamer@c.im avatar

@ZLabe thanks all your plots, but it's difficult to actually read this plot's axes' labeling on an Android phone in Chrome. Perhaps lower-frequency tick labels and a much larger font size would help? E.g., maybe x-axis labels every 10 years to make room for the larger font?

RCreamer,
@RCreamer@c.im avatar

@ZLabe no problem! Thanks again for sharing your work:)

I just deactivated my Twitter account. The platform has a lot of good information on it. However, because of disturbing recent and rumoured future changes, it's no longer a net plus to use the platform going forward.

I notice a bunch of new folks following my feed here. Welcome!

Was there another meltdown at the bird site? What brings you?

RCreamer,
@RCreamer@c.im avatar

@heidilifeldman oh, I'm hoping that someday (if I ever make some progress on my software projects) I can show you (to get your feedback) how I hope novel visualization of: arguments + argument elements' provenance, thought/ideation processes, etc. may improve communication and combat disinformation. So basically I'm just a follower who may or may not share some work in progress down the road:)

RESULTS...

Have you, or do you plan to create a Threads "suckware" account and give Mark permission to hoover up all your personal information?

Data Collected by Threads: Health and Fitness, Financial Information, Contact Info, User Content, Browsing History, Purchases, Location, Contacts, Search History, Identifiers

RCreamer,
@RCreamer@c.im avatar

@mastodonmigration - I wouldn't mind giving it a try (disappointed w/🐘 so far) except that I have a very strict rule of never installing any apps on my phone unless they are absolutely required. Plus, I don't use my laptop for casual web browsing, only the phone, so Threads aren't in my future. Almost all apps gather and sell data. About the only apps I install and use are photography lens depth-of-field calculators and browsers.

@TootTropiques @bookstodon so I have discovered. The same applies to those wishing to acquire more knowledge than time permits. And for many who have to work for a living, the creating and learning cannot really start until after retirement, so, truly, very little time is available.

@evan maybe you shouldn't ignore the distinction between AI and AGI?

Teacher appreciation post: My kids returned to school in the U.S. today & I was reminded of how absolutely wonderful public school teachers can be.

In the face of ongoing attacks on education, book bans, guns, uncertainty, budget cuts, huge class sizes, injustice & more, it’s such an unimaginably challenging time to teach.

And yet, incredible teachers still show up for our kids every day. They know the future is in their hands. And I am so grateful for them. ❤️

RCreamer,
@RCreamer@c.im avatar

@Sheril I remember my granddaughter's 2nd grade teacher. Often when driving home from the grocery store in the evenings around 7 pm, I'd pass the elementary school and her car would be in the parking lot and the room lights would be on. This includes weekdays and weekends.
