my cis female nesting partner has never once had her estradiol levels tested and she's been to doctors about chronic health issues for almost a decade.

imagine being a trans woman and never having your hormone levels checked.

honestly, this is one of the ways that cisnormativity likely hurts cis people; she should have had her levels checked years ago!

RainofTerra,
@RainofTerra@terra.incognita.net avatar

@terraboops @jenn everyone, cis or trans, should have a hormone panel done in their late teens or early 20s so they have a basis for comparison later in life. If that had happened to me I’d have had my pituitary tumor (prolactinoma / pituitary macroadenoma) diagnosed 12 years earlier before it completely wrecked my endocrine system.

Layering fishnets over opaque tights is my latest “she’s just wearing the clothes she would have worn in the late 90s and early aughts” personal trend I think.

RainofTerra,

@alda do you have a specific place in Scotland you like to answer with? Maybe “what place in Scotland most represents you as a person?” is something everyone should spend some time thinking about.

"The best way to fight Nazis is to shine a spotlight on their beliefs and debunk them."

It's a popular idea.

The notion that exposure and rational argument will inevitably triumph over bigotry and hate.

But history tells us - it's bullshit.

We've been down this road before.

It was called World War II.

Court about to begin. The defense table, from left to right: Blanche, the defendant (ie Trump), Bove, and Necheles (notably farthest from Trump). Gaggle of photographers shoot Trump, inches from his face: he maintains an implacable and dour expression. ADA Josh Steinglass and his team now enter: Steinglass is very much the lead here.

Fallacies of Distributed Computing: Automotive Edition

So our 2016 Subaru Outback has been having horrible battery drain issues for a couple years now. We got the attached service bulletin recently that explained the issue.

It turns out that the Data Communications Module that powers Subaru's Starlink service (emergency assistance/safety/etc. service) now causes a battery drain because it is trying to talk to a 3G network that is no longer there, and it just tries its little heart out.

You can bring the car in to get the DCM reprogrammed to not do this anymore which will fix the problem, and they will also cover batteries killed by the issue.

But my favorite part about this is that this happened because they didn't account for the first Fallacy of Distributed Computing:

"The network is reliable".

A bunch of vehicle computers each connecting to a home network sure sounds like distributed computing to me. 🤷🏻‍♀️

At the dealership, let’s see what they do.

RainofTerra,
@RainofTerra@terra.incognita.net avatar

Well the dealership wouldn’t touch the DCM thing soooo instead I used a tap to bridge the DCM fuse to another fuse that was empty but wired as an accessory fuse (confirmed with a multimeter) and now the DCM only gets power when the ignition is on (either in accessory mode or actually started). Works for me, the only reason we need it powered at all is that it powers the hands free mic and the front speakers. 🤷🏻‍♀️

RainofTerra,
@RainofTerra@terra.incognita.net avatar

@masukomi we installed a non-OEM head unit a couple years ago and they hand wavy blamed that even though there was a service bulletin and even though I explained to them I’d already measured the parasitic drain on the DCM circuit 🤷🏻‍♀️

ZachWeinersmith, to random

One of the weirdest modern things to me is this obsession with generations. Maybe I haven't read the right stuff, but you pick up a 19th or 18th century book and they talk about the past, or conflict in families between old and young, but never this weird cohort-antagonism thing?

Could be it's random culture shit, but maybe it's because people have fewer kids, so they don't span generations? Or maybe tech acceleration means cohorts have more differences that are real?

RainofTerra,
@RainofTerra@terra.incognita.net avatar

@ZachWeinersmith I just assumed people used to die too fast for it to matter

A reminder that the engineer who invented STP also wrote a poem about it:
“Algorhyme” by Radia Perlman:

I think that I shall never see
A graph more lovely than a tree.
A tree whose crucial property
Is loop-free connectivity.
A tree that must be sure to span
So packets can reach every LAN.
First, the root must be selected.
By ID, it is elected.
Least-cost paths from root are traced.
In the tree, these paths are placed.
A mesh is made by folks like me,
Then bridges find a spanning tree.
