My thoughts on the Self-dx/official dx conversations.

Hands up any OFFICIAL Dx'd individual who DIDN'T first think they were Autistic/ADHD BEFORE they went down the official route?

anyone? precious few I bet.

I imagine few to none woke up one day and decided to partake in a long drawn out and upsetting process to prove they weren't autistic then were surprised to find out they were.

It seems to me that we're ALL self-DX at SOME point and the ONLY difference between self and official DX is one has a piece of paper that essentially says "Yeah, you were right all along!"

It's 100% valid and ok to self-dx. I would propose that most of us do.

And any Dx is not set in stone. They're fluid and in flux. I am fortunate and privileged enough to have an official diagnosis of Autism.. But I suspect I might be more ADHD or AuDHD at least. My paper diagnosis won't change what's written on it but my personal diagnosis can change.

It's 100% valid to say you're autistic then veer to saying you're ADHD and back again until you find somewhere you fit.

And in the end it's just a word. You exist within a fuzzy space surrounded by others in their fuzzy spaces. Sometimes those fuzzy spaces overlap, sometimes those fuzzy spaces are separate but no two fuzzy spaces are 100% alike.

You define your identity. Not a piece of paper.

To reiterate once more , SELF DX Is 100% valid

In all seriousness, I think it's time to accept that web search is currently broken as an idea, and we all need to go back to sharing our favorite links on personal websites. And we need to make personal websites a thing again, too.

RickRae,

@rollingguyam

Agreed. I don't think the idea of Web search is broken so much as it's been subverted.

Maybe we need a search platform that detects SEO tactics and downgrades those results. Recognizes the hallmarks of AI-generated garbage and delists it. Ranks weighted by incoming link count, combined with recognition of junk domains so those links can't be faked.

I suppose that's not profitable, though...

Texas' government just spent $31.7M in the middle of a heat wave and energy shortage.

No, not to provide fresh shelter to the homeless. Neither to install booths with free fresh water. Neither to increase the number of public spaces (outside of shopping malls) where people can gather, instead of burning energy to keep their homes cool 24/7. Neither to boost its investments in renewables and pivot away from the oil that it keeps digging.

No, the government just gave that money away to Bitcoin miners to convince them to turn off their energy-hungry machines, so everybody else can also use energy to keep themselves cool.

Let that sink in. Even a life-threatening heatwave can't get miners to behave cooperatively and turn off their machines, whose only purpose is as pointless as randomly guessing a number whose SHA256 hash satisfies a certain arbitrary numeric constraint - and they skim some profits out of these pointless puzzles just because someone decided that putting up a system with such perverse financial incentives was a good idea. In order to get them to behave as someone who's not a complete selfish sociopath and evolutionary failure, the government had to compensate them for the losses that they would make by turning off their computers.

I guess that today's capitalism is that system where it's actually ok for the government to spend public money - as long as that money goes to those who need it the least.

If the chili oil is for heat and you can add that elsewise, try substituting (roasted) sesame oil sometime. It's a lovely flavor profile if the proportions are right.

(I love experimenting with sauces and often have just a bowl of cubed extra-firm tofu with an off-the-cuff sauce.)

    I'm toying with the idea of setting up at home. I've already got a Pi4 running some plex software for in home streaming, so I figued I could tack onto that. Outside of initial setup, can anyone give me an idea of how much possible tweaking may be needed for personal family use? Any big things to note before starting? I use as much adblocking layers as I can already and simply despise ads.

    RickRae,

    @hush404

    Just an individual here, but I only had to add a couple of additional blocks/allows to meet my needs, and am otherwise running the default lists. I rarely have to touch that part of it.

    Beyond blocking ads, also consider stopping Smart TVs and such from phoning home (there are lists available for that sort of thing as well).

    RickRae,

    @hush404

    I have two TCL TVs (Roku OS) solely for computer monitors, and a Roku in the kitchen that links to my network-attached tuner/OTA DVR. The mothership wouldn't get anything useful anyway, but they don't need to be hearing from my gear or pushing ads at me. Connected for updates only.

    A family setting might be different; what do you do when a family member complains a site is blocked? (E.G., history.com is legit but they started routing everything through click trackers).

    RickRae,

    @hush404

    Yeah, that's why I made it clear I'm an individual; I have free rein whereas you'll have to accommodate others.

    The logs are pretty good about revealing the issues (right in the Admin interface) and there's an easy "Add this to the {block|allow} list" function, so it's usually pretty straightforward.

    Me, I've just gotten cranky enough to say, "You know what? No." and walk away from a site. But family members likely won't look at it that way. :ablobcatwink:

    RickRae,

    @hush404
    If there's any screenshots (or whatever) I can do for you (after work tomorrow) to clarify things or answer questions, just let me know. Happy to help however I can.

    RickRae,

    @hush404

    Completely understandable. I just thought it might help you judge if "maintenance" would be straightforward enough (e.g. showing allow/block actions), before going to the effort of installing/setting up.

    The only other real "maintenance" are system updates (which you already know how to do) and Pi-hole updates. You're alerted to the latter at the bottom of your main admin page, and it's (usually) as simple as logging in and issuing (if I remember correctly) "pihole -up".

    RickRae,

    @hush404

    Hah... well, I'm far from a Pi-hole expert (more just a user) but ask away. If there's an issue we can't noodle out between us there are others who can lend a hand.

    Smooth sailing... err... surfing to you! Let me know how it goes/what you think.

    Any good tips for printing TPE (88)? I see a lot of contradictory info - some say heated bed, some say unheated, some say textured PEI is thre worst material to print on but that's the only material I managed to print something at all on (smooth or textured glass is worse). 10-20mm/s, no difference, it just loosens on layer 2, and is generally gummy and disgusting (even dried in dryer!).

    Please only direct experience, articles contradict each other.

    RickRae,

    @stooovie

    "Gummy and disgusting" is outside my experience and definitely doesn’t sound right. Was the one foot you managed to print also "gummy"? Did that happen to be the first print from a freshly opened spool? I'm wondering if there are some moisture issues at play.

    I'm probably no help with adhesion; all my TPU printing was on an older pre-PEI machine. That one used a borosilicate glass plate coated with hair spray. The bed was likely 60°C but I'd need to load up the profile to verify.

    RickRae,

    @stooovie
    Huh. And the one foot you managed to print, does that one also feel "gummy"? Different in any way from the various failures? I dunno, maybe I'm getting hung up on something that doesn't matter.

    Losing it at the second layer... how does the first layer look/feel? Is it laid down evenly, does it look (and feel, if you run your finger over it) smooth, is the thickness right?

    Speaking of which, how about first and subsequent layer heights (0.4 nozzle), something conservative?
