Gonna try something new for a while and see if it catches on.

Attach the above hashtag, and teach something you know. It can be something useful or just some random knowledge you have acquired. 🏫

Please boost for a wider audience and response. There's so much negativity at the moment. Let's remind ourselves what makes social media great - learning from each other!

Frustrating start to the day. The Lancet puts out a study saying one in three women are likely to experience long-term health problems caused by childbirth. MedicalXpress publishes a press release (https://medicalxpress.com/news/2023-12-women-health-problems-birth.html).

None of the wires cover it — not Reuters, not AFP, not AP, not Bloomberg.

One in three women is (roughly) one on six members of the human race. No news agency thinks long-term health issues affecting one in six people matter.

Maybe 1/5 of world's population? More women than men so not quite 1/6

John Mastodon: a mythical tech wizard in Silicon Valley where only the most senior engineers dare reverently whisper his name.

Some say he was a child prodigy turned reclusive genius, who ghosted the tech world to avoid his own innovations being commercialized. Rumored to have created, then destroyed, the groundbreaking 'Mastodon Framework' in a secret Norwegian lab.

Today, he's Silicon Valley's favorite tech phantom – a legend... more meme than man.

This is the end of Guilani. He's broken and finished.

It's also a warning to people who want to spread lies about others.

(Adding: Whatever Giuliani has, the plaintiffs will take.)

Also adding: I don't know anything about collecting judgments.

Also, cynical comments don't make you look worldly or clever. They make you look either cynical or naive as if you think we live in a fairy tale world.

Typical CDC! It issued an “official health advisory” to healthcare providers that “Low vaccination rates, coupled with ongoing increases in national and international respiratory disease activity caused by multiple pathogens, including influenza viruses, SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes #COVID19), and RSV, could lead to more severe disease and increased healthcare capacity strain in the coming weeks.”

But it tells the public: Wear “a well-fitting mask if you choose to wear a mask.” Why “if”?!?

Scotter,
@Scotter@newsie.social avatar

@augieray
Why do they let people off the hook? Probably don't want to sound 'bossy' so there isn't backlash.

They really need to warn people about prevalence of viruses going around

As we hear more stories like the Cox abortion case in TX & the miscarriage felony case in OH, I am very much hoping people begin acknowledge & understand what a gauntlet of risk and pain pregnancy very often is.

Our current rose-tinted, soft-focus image of pregnancy does not serve birthing people.

Scotter,
@Scotter@newsie.social avatar

@gwensnyder
It irritates me when people say their baby is a 'miracle'. Every pregnancy is challenging. Everyone who carries a baby (or babies) works very hard for 10 months (or as long as possible) to ensure a good outcome for their baby (or multiple babies).

The place where I had lunch today had a particularly fine option on their sandwich menu: a roast beef sandwich, which came with a handful of roast potatoes and a small jug of gravy. I love roasties but almost never cook them, so it felt like a real treat to have four for lunch. The sandwich was also very good, though could have done with some onions or something.

Scotter,

@sheepnik
We had sandwiches out yesterday and was shocked by the price. Beef is noticeably high, even in Texas

So, I went to CVS to pick up the prescription they've sent me 4 texts about. It wasn't there. They said it was at a different pharmacy that I've never, ever used. They had to transfer the prescription back and then told me the drugs were out of stock and to come back on Monday.

[I'm gloomy about this. The supreme court is overloaded with hard-right Catholics and that bunch has shown itself to be radically anti-abortion]

Supreme Court to decide whether abortion pill will remain widely available

The high court said it will hear a case brought by a conservative group opposed to the drug.

If this is an accurate poll, then it's proof that misinformation is spreading, and disinformation is winning. Idiocracy is here, and it's time to see if Ireland will take me in.

Pretty shocked to see that this poll shows LGBT people supporting Trump.

Today's feature is Doc Savage paperbacks of the 1960s and '70s from Bantam Books. They're reprints from Doc Savage magazine, a pulp from the '30s and '40s published by Street and Smith. Nearly 90 percent of the initial Doc Savage stories were written by author Lester Dent. Kenneth Robeson was a house-name owned by Street and Smith.
Adventure awaits!
