Inspired by an office water cooler discussion:

Is there something you need to or wish you could tell someone, but haven’t?

What is stopping you?
How could you overcome it?

@DemocracySpot That sucks. I once wrote down in gory detail longhand on a piece of notebook paper stuff like that, and then burned it. Mildly therapeutic but it didn’t change anything, of course.

I’m generally not one to call for banning things, but I have just a few little ban requests:

  1. Private jets that belong to people who fly in them to climate conferences
  2. Twelve foot (3.66 m) tall decorative plastic skeletons (previous pleas have fallen upon deaf ears). Can we at least limit it to one per family? Is that too much to ask?
  3. The expansion of inflatable lawn ornaments into additional holidays

Something occurred to me the other day that’s a bit painful to admit, but I’ll admit it anyway and maybe you’ll understand why I brand myself as a perpetual social media idiot, I mean, amateur.
As a “professional knowledge worker” (ick, seriously) I have long embraced the practice of Inbox (near) Zero, which means ideally you clarify the meaning of each item that comes into your world and take appropriate action on it, and not leave a bunch of unaddressed “things” lying around that will bite you in the ass later. That’s all well and good and useful for living in this fire hose orgy that is modern life, until you bring that attitude to your social media feed. Then something that’s supposed to be fun turns into another chore. I realized I was subconsciously putting pressure on myself to make sure I had my feed covered while also not expecting anyone to treat my drivel as particularly important. Pretty stupid, ain’t it? 😆

My first and only photo taken and processed in 2024. I’d add the caveat “so far” but I hope that goes without saying. Or not. Life is like that sometimes. Like now. And also, one reason why I like so much.

  1. Original
  2. High-key
  3. Low key

This high-key image shows the steeple of a white church with a clock against a clear sky.

Guess what makes a good book?

Good writing & a story you’re interested in. A novel idea, I know, but in this day & age we are all but told who & what we should be reading. Don’t listen, read what & who you enjoy.

Below are a stack of books by Richard Russo, who I think is an incredible writer. You may totally disagree & that’s 100% alright with me.

@Likewise @bookstodon As usual I have nothing intelligent to contribute to your book discussion, but I am gratified to see that duck with a toys-in-the-attic-crazy expression on the spine of a book entitled “Straight Man”

Read what you like, and let people think you have toys in the attic too, if they so wish. If we live our lives based on other peoples’ opinions, what kind of life is that? 🙂

Here's a little something I did last winter as an exercise. I’m posting this today because I have yet to follow through on my promise to myself to do more of this kind of thing this winter, so I have nothing new to show.

I was reading a book called “Light, Science, and Magic” which I highly recommend. This is a technique it taught for photographing glass in a low key manner. The second photo is the pull-back of my setup, which gets the job done but is less than ideal (I made-do with what I had, mainly cardboard and a desk lamp.) I have the light on one side illuminating the white backdrop somewhat unevenly, as you can see the different levels on the left vs. the right side of the glass. Ideally you try to get full, even illumination on the white part. The black foam core on the left is blocking the light from hitting the glass directly. The idea of the black backdrop in front of the white one is to illuminate just the edges of the glass while keeping the volume of the object dark. You frame it so that the white is juuuusssst outside the image frame.

I learned a lot from the book, and have since forgotten most of it (I do have notes) but if you’re interested in how light behaves on different kinds of surfaces and some techniques you can use, it’s definitely worth reading.

@RiversideBryan Bryan, I think they’re both great shots, but I’ll be a contrarian and favor the second. The shadows of the pilings in the first are very cool, but the composition of the second is leading my eye around the frame nicely—the curved boardwalk in and to the left, across bridge to the right, then down to the starting point again, drawn by the nearest piling that merges with the frame. It has a more finished feel to it to me. And it hides the blown out reflections (which are dang hard to avoid in a situation like this). Print it and frame it, I say! 👍

Cozy mysteries?

I’ve read & enjoyed Still Life by Louise Penny, does that count? I recently found this book, The Thursday Murder Club & it was called a ‘cozy mystery.’ Do you all have any recommendations, do you like this genre or am I’m just 100 years old?

The most precious book I own is not my bible, but my dad’s bible. It was his guide for living, his notebook, occasionally an address & phone book, his prayer requests, & more. The spine cracked long ago, the binding is coming apart, & pages are loose all over the place. What I’m trying to say is that it’s the most beautiful book I own & I hope my bible one day resembles his.

As we all know, used books are the best books.
