I’ve listened to every song in at least four times. So many great tunes to choose from. My short-list got down to ten songs and I would have loved to have enough votes for all of them. I have picked three and put my votes in. I didn’t vote for my own entry because then I would really only be voting for two songs, so my three votes went out to other entries. Best of luck to everyone who entered and thank you to everyone else who listened, got hyped, and votes in , and of course a huge dose of gratitude to everyone involved in organising and running the event.
Big love to you all!!

I hate vacuuming. I hate my vacuum, even though I chose it!

The problem is the whirly-brush bit on the front clogs with the combined hair from me and the cat. I need to spend half an hour dismantling the machine to clean it after a vacuuming session.

The other problem is neither floor type setting actually works as expected.

Perhaps I need a better vacuum, or better yet employ a cleaner!

@snaptophobic We've got a Shark. Seems quite good at dealing with hair.. better than the previous Dysons we had.
Still needs clearing out after a few cleans, but better 🙂

Here in Australia, as you probably know, it’s the future. So it’s Weed Day, 20th April, 4/20 already here. :420: :420leaf:

has released a new track for those who celebrate, called Gettin Stoned, a collaboration with Andre Louis (@Onj).
Last time I announced a release at midnight like this, there were issues with people not being able to play the song until the release date reached their time zone, which was annoying. This time, I hacked the system and released it a day early, so I feel comfortable that everyone should be able to play it immediately.
I present to you the latest in !

Happy Weed Day!

You show up to a technical coding job interview and they want to test to see how well you understand low level concepts and adapting. You are asked to write a simple algorithm that produces a result (eg fizz-bang), but you must write it in assembly. Given plenty of documentation oriented from beginner to expert at your disposal, you have a choice between x86 and 6502. Which are you picking?

Slash909uk,
@Slash909uk@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@vwbusguy 6502 - smaller instruction set, easier to read the docs!

UK Government wanting to ban sale of smart phones to under 16s.

Like that will work. They can’t have a contract til 18 so the adults buy the contracts. Like I’ve just done. All it means is they can’t get one on the shops themselves and can’t get the pay as you go SIMs, nothing will actually change.

So the government live in the real world?

*my kids smartphone has all the parental controls on, contacts limited, limited access to apps etc. He just wants to talk to his friends.

Slash909uk,
@Slash909uk@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@hobbitswife I think it's a PR stunt for them.
Honestly I want my kids to experience and understand how to deal with social media now, so they don't suddenly freak out and make terrible mistakes at 16!
Yes, they just want to chat with their friends and play games mostly.
Yes, I have parental controls on.

I suspect not having any controls is the real issue; I guess lots of parents don't know how this stuff works at all. Maybe mandating easy to manage controls would be helpful?

CatherineFlick, to random
@CatherineFlick@mastodon.me.uk avatar

Can anyone explain to me how these people sleep at night? I just don’t understand how a company that feeds kids can see a profit rise of 30% as anything other than a damning indictment of the quality of their food and treatment of their workers.

Slash909uk,
@Slash909uk@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@Edent @CatherineFlick @choffee interesting, thanks!
As chair of our primary schools PTA, it is always frustrating when the school cannot use local people to provide goods and services and their hands are tied to the county council approved suppliers list.
Good to know there are means for local businesses to get 'in the door' provided the managers of the frameworks are open to this. I'd guess framework agreements work at council level, not per school!

Help mastodon gardeners, setting up my automatic waterer and no matter how tight I screw on the hose end it sprays water everywhere. Am I missing a seal or something? I don’t recall it having one before (this is my replacement timer after I accidentally left my old one out in the cold). I’ve tried some plumbers tape to no avail too.

Edit: going to get an o ring for the timer unit and see how that goes.

Slash909uk,
@Slash909uk@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@CatherineFlick I take it this green part fits into a spigot on the timer unit?

Check there is an o-ring in the timer spigot.. does not look like there is a groove for one on this part of the fitting.

The hose itself seems to be quite tight on the fitting so that looks ok.

HTH!

Slash909uk,

@dgar looks like a scene from the Amazing world of Gumball where they mix up the art styles. I like it! Make the car look like it was torn from a magazine maybe? So the whole thing is like a montage?

In my new column 'The Crazy Ones' over at Every, you'll find a full history of Adam Osborne and the rise and fall of Osborne Computers.

The number of outlets prepared to pay for longform tech history journalism is tiny. So please do read, enjoy and spread the word...

Is this acceptable for 25k euro in 2024/25 ??

Slash909uk,
@Slash909uk@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@Rjdlandscapes no.

I just bought a 1 year old EV with 3000km, 50kWh and 100kW fast charge for that money. Limited edition too 😁

2nd hand market is solid now; new sales will need to compete with older, but more upmarket cars for sure.

Slash909uk,
@Slash909uk@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@Rjdlandscapes even if you don't use it most of the time, the perceived lack of utility would put me off. Would you buy a car without a jack for changing the tyre?
I'd guess it saves them some wiring and the socket? Maybe less cooling? It won't save development costs as they already have their car platform with fast charging in other models.

What was wonderful about MySpace was that everyone got to customise their page. Even normally non-techy people would learn a little HTML and CSS to bejazzle their space.

I would like Mastodon, and ActivityPub, to support the ability for me to customise my posts.

I would like to customise:

  • Backgrounds
  • Have twinkling stars falling across my toots
  • Blink and Marquee tag support
  • Font customisation (comic sans!)
  • Music that auto plays when you see my toot

Absolute no! Other than guide dogs obviously.

What about those of us with allergies? What about those who are scared of dogs due to previous trauma?

Apparently we’d have to ‘have some provision’ for us.

How about not bringing dogs into the office the first place?

Well, SV has been causing malaise (ask the parents whom Zuck was just apologizing to) for and showed disdain (ask the Rohingya) towards pretty much everyone else. And made a killing doing so.

OpenAI said outright it's impossible for them to compensate authors of works they use as "training data". Implying their business model is more important than somebody's livelihood. 🤔
