Yes it’s time we had a dedicated and paid disaster relief force: Defence disaster relief ‘shadow workforce’ role puts national security at risk

It would be much more useful given our disasters seem to multiply.

@Tooden @luciedigitalni @kcarruthers if you want to "win" armed conflicts, boots on the ground are the only way to take and hold positions, and as we're seeing with Ukraine, if you have excellent SAM presence, the airspace is highly restricted.

The odd thing about working for a large and older corporation is that every now and again we get a message like "please celebrate X for their 45 years working at the company!" and its a statement I feel is so alien to people of my generation onwards that it might as well be seen as landing on Mars in terms of our chances of ever managing the same thing in any role

Found a nest of these ants in the front yard. Haven't seen them before. Can anyone help ID them for me?

Ants with red front and black bum.

Taco_lad,
@Taco_lad@aus.social avatar

@phocks @JesseRowell @futurebird yeh they're meat ants, they make big fuck-off nests maybe a metre in diameter, and will be the best local dead animal disposal service. They tend to stay away from houses, don't hurt too much if they bite, and are pretty common in NSW and further south, so much so that I thought they were ubiquitous throughout Aus

Taco_lad,
@Taco_lad@aus.social avatar

@alcootatooter @futurebird @JesseRowell @phocks they do roam pretty far from the nest to get food, usually in big long lines to the nearest carcass, I've followed a line of them for at least 100m from nest to a dead bird once

Taco_lad,
@Taco_lad@aus.social avatar

@alcootatooter @futurebird @JesseRowell @phocks they will go anything.
Fair bit of Youtube content on it, I remembered they're also called 'Kickboxing ants' sometimes

i don't compute how we're supposed to make demands of our elected officials in any way other than threatening to not vote for them unless we have the money to threaten to withhold bribes

Taco_lad,
@Taco_lad@aus.social avatar

@NoraReed preferential voting is a neat solution for this imo.
You can have my vote first go - if you're the least worst option.

If you don't meet quota, you don't get elected, we recently had an almost guaranteed 2-party preferred candidate get replaced with an independent because preferences for the other '2nd party' stacked up and prevented their election.

They were very upset at basically being fired.

Taco_lad,
@Taco_lad@aus.social avatar

@jpm @NoraReed it's been an absolute joy to watch the active rejection of 2 party politics, but it wouldn't be possible without the compulsory voting bit, because disengagement doesn't deliver the votes in weaponised form against the 2 party drongos

"A Mississippi slaughterhouse that supplies chicken to Chick-fil-A is directly to blame for the death of a 16-year-old worker who was sucked into equipment in July and killed within minutes."

I work with teens every day and can't get this story out of my mind. Despite this the push to weaken labor regulations continues.

This is where all those "right to work" for teens laws lead.

Children should be in algebra class, goddamit.

Taco_lad,

@ddmgmgh @futurebird another one that would be hilarious to witness would be mandated unionisation (fees paid for by fines to the business ) of the workforce of any industry that causes the death of an employee in the course of employment - Union shops have much better safety records.
That way one company fucking up and murdering someone makes every other company in the industry safer.

WebMD’s parent company, Internet Brands, released a cringey and abusive internal video threatening their employees to . “We aren’t asking or negotiating at this point”, the CEO says. “Don’t mess with us”, the video reads at the end. The video features employees dancing and celebrating RTO (at gunpoint? or at least under threat of firing by HR?).

I know corporate videos are all kinda crappy, but this one is…spouse-beating levels of terrible.
