That’ll teach me to open my mouth about things I know less about.

The tree was valued by locals as a tree, native or not. Cutting it down was just wrong. That’s what should have been the focus of the reporting - not the ‘historic’ or ‘famous’ side of it.

ETA: The BBC rightfully talks about the local impact, not the stupid movie connection:

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-tyne-66952980

The Guardian reports the tree was believed to be 300 years old

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/sep/28/boy-16-arrested-in-connection-with-felling-of-famous-sycamore-gap-tree-hadrians-wall-england

@anathema_device actually I think it's a good example of how the media twists things or looks for an angle to increase 'clicks'.

In a strange way it makes me quite proud, that we loved a tree in this way. (Does that make me odd? It's just makes a change from the worship of mammon!) I can't tell you the sense of shock...

anathema_device, (edited ) to random
@anathema_device@bne.social avatar

Can people keep a sense of perspective about this tree that was chopped down?
It was not (a) historic or (b) anything to do with Robin Hood. It was on Hadrian’s Wall, and it’s famous for being used in “Robin Hood Prince of Thieves”. It’s a sycamore which is (a) not a native species to Britain and (b) wasn’t even that old.

ETA: @TalktoBeverley points out it was beloved by locals https://mas.to/@TalktoBeverley/111145478209658365

Vandalism is horrible, but it wasn’t like he carved his name on the Colosseum.

TalktoBeverley,
@TalktoBeverley@mas.to avatar

@anathema_device perhaps if you lived locally you would understand.

It meant a great deal to a lot of people here. I can't think of anyone who lives in the area who would relate it to Robin Hood. That's not the reason for its fame, at least not to those of us who live nearby.

TalktoBeverley, (edited )
@TalktoBeverley@mas.to avatar

@anathema_device not offended. Just trying to explain.

I think anyone linking it to Robin Hood is probably just joining the 'bandwagon'. That's not why locals loved it. Not that I've taken a poll! Just my opinion and I am from the area if that counts for anything.

There was just something special about the happenstance of its location. I can't imagine how many times it's been photographed. Its image is used on greetings cards too. It's not always easy to explain why something is beloved.

TalktoBeverley,
@TalktoBeverley@mas.to avatar

@anathema_device if he remains local (assuming he is a local) I think he'll struggle to gain employment. And although some will be understanding towards his family, there will be others who will no doubt be aggrieved.

It's the sort of place where people propose... there was a romance about it... I'm still struggling to get my head round the idea that someone would do this.

I'm not going to look at what's been posted online as I can imagine there'll be some horrible stuff said.

@anathema_device thank you.

I'm clueless about this sort of thing. I've not had problems signing these electronically before but I have recently stopped using Chrome and using another browser instead. I guessed that's something to do with it but since I don't understand how such things operate I've no clue how to fix it. Might have to hold my nose and use Chrome so that I can sign.

Thank you for taking the time.

A 'quiet' day so far in The wind has dropped since yesterday (the last couple of days have been fairly breezy). Waiting with baited breath for Storm Agnes.

TalktoBeverley,
@TalktoBeverley@mas.to avatar

@anathema_device You're so kind... Thank you 😽

The last storm cost me quite a bit. Some tiles came off the roof, not so bad you might think. But roofers were so busy that by the time I got someone to fix things, some pigeons had taken up residence. All the loft insulation had to be removed, replaced and the space disinfected... Such a mess and rather expensive!

Hope all's good with you.

For those of you worried about my little black cat, here is Shula finally settled down on top of me. (She bit me a few minutes later because I hadn’t paid enough attention to where I was patting her, but given how inconsolably upset she’d been this morning, I didn’t hold it against her :) )

After my poll this morning, I remembered that next week there is a public holiday and kids are back at school. So I girded my loins (which took some time, I have a lot of loin) and did the errands despite the brain ropiness getting worse (how? I took all the pills today?), I got them all done.

Now I will put everything else off until I feel better.

@anathema_device the person I care for is ASD and won't accept support from anyone but me.

So far no amount of coaxing can persuade them that 'something has to give'.

The guilt at the thought of 'downing tools' and insisting is immense.

My speaking into the void is a sign of desperation... hoping for a miracle. Though I don't really believe a solution exists.

Thank you for responding. 😽

I can see both sides of this but ‘Better behaved than some patrons’ is a pretty low bar. I'd have thought that most dogs behave better than their owners do, and those that don't, have shit owners

‘Better behaved than some patrons’: should dogs be allowed inside all Australian pubs?

A Melbourne council sparked opposition when it warned pubs about allowing dogs inside, citing food safety standards. But some say dog-friendly pubs are just ‘better’

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2023/sep/24/melbourne-dog-friendly-pubs-australia-laws

TalktoBeverley,
@TalktoBeverley@mas.to avatar

@anathema_device where I live, it feels as though dogs are more welcome than people. Owners seem to assume that you will love their pets as much as they do.
It wouldn't be so bad, but pre-pandemic I recall the puzzled look of a waitress who petted a dog and then brought me a cappuccino putting her fingers round the cup rim to stop it slipping in it's saucer! I told her I wanted another and suggested she wash her hands.
Makes you wonder what you don't see!

TalktoBeverley,
@TalktoBeverley@mas.to avatar

@anathema_device oh I make no assumptions. I was just trying to drive home the point to the waitress, who was clearly oblivious to hygiene. The cafe in question is lovely (?), but that incident sticks in my mind. We've no idea what goes on behind the scenes.
Since the pandemic I no longer 'eat out' anyway. I care for a family member who is extremely anxious about infection so such 'treats' are no longer part of our lives.

TalktoBeverley,
@TalktoBeverley@mas.to avatar

@anathema_device oh my goodness! I'd have a meltdown. My OCD is screaming at the thought! (Hygiene and germ transfer. GAH!)
My first husband actually used to turn the tap on to pretend he was washing his hands; I soon got wise to that. Trust me, there was a re-education programme! 😂😂😂
Imagine preferring to pretend rather than actually washing your hands!
I can't begin to tell you my troubles with public WCs, taps and door handles... 🤣🤣🤣 (Pre-pandemic. Now, a public WC is out of the question!)

In Japanese folklore the kirin is a yokai (supernatural creature) that originated in China. It looks like a deer with dragon's scales, the tail of an ox, and a horse's mane covered in flames. This beautiful, gentle creature harms nothing and is a strict vegetarian. It is seen as an omen of luck and great fortune.

♥️♥️♥️Shoutout to the staff of the hotel I stayed at for expertly de-escalating a Karen situation!

♥️♥️♥️And shoutout to the white hotel guests that stuck around to make sure that hotel security heard exactly what she was trying to do. My favorite comment: "Wow! A Karen situation in real life! I've only ever seen these online! This is surreal! What is she thinking?"

End result, yours truly did not get kicked out of the hotel for no reason, and feels slightly better about the state of the world.

@mekkaokereke No comfort, but I hate that you have to weigh up your actions in this way.

I know this is your reality.

I'm sorry I have nothing but my solidarity to offer. Go well.

Evolution doesn’t look how it’s depicted in pop culture. We often picture the famous “March of Progress” illustration where a series of apes stand in line leading to a modern human.

But evolution is not linear. It branches & divides without an intended direction or endpoint through natural selection.

Short story: I have curly hair. But I straighten it for work to appear “professional.” Or I wear a bun to look “serious.”

These ideas were shaped by social norms + experiences where I’ve been the only woman in the room or dealt w sexual harassment/bias.

But when my 15yo niece visited last week, I marveled at her stunning curls. “It just dries this way,” she said.

And it dawned on me - Wait, mine does too! Or would if I paid less attention to cultural expectations. So I think I’ll do that now.

TalktoBeverley,
@TalktoBeverley@mas.to avatar

Another "me too" moment between us though my solution was to wear my hair cut very short @Sheril

Once I got off the career treadmill (totally incompatible with my caring responsibilities, so I'll leave you to imagine the damage to my income and pension, but that's a whole other story...) I allowed it to grow. It's so superficial, but I've had some pleasure from the appreciation of others of my curly locks (also now embarrassed at toe-curling disclosure!)

This excellent illustration, “The hostile obstacle course that & BIPOC have to endure in academia” is making the rounds again & it’s always worth resharing.

Also, this applies to far, far more than careers in . https://www.nature.com/articles/s41561-021-00868-0

TalktoBeverley,
@TalktoBeverley@mas.to avatar

I don't know where to start with this @Sheril

From being told I didn't get a promotion because "David has a family to support..." (needless to say, he got the post) to "... someone at your level can't job-share" post maternity leave, (there was no mention of grades in the HR manual) and so much in between...

Oh yes, and the female HR officer who said it "happened to me" when I complained about a poor salary offer post maternity leave - implying you can suck it up too.

Pfffttt...

Is anyone else having timeout errors constantly happen when you try to post or comment? At first I thought it was just me, but I found out another person was having the exact same problem, and now it's becoming too bothersome for me to just ignore.

If you are having problems, just know that your post does actually post, so when you see the timeout happen just discard the post and the post should be up, at least that's what works for me. This also applies to when you favorite or retoot a post or edit a post.

@thepoliticalcat @KimberlyN @StillIRise1963 The pandemic has made me think about all the years my colleagues and I accepted we'd be ill each autumn (fall) semester with euphemistically 'freshers' 'flu'. If only we'd masked or had good ventilation. I have lived like a hermit since March 2020 and think I might have had one cold in that time. Don't know how, as I use N95s, but I guess we all slip up at some point. But no COVID thank goodness!
