Hi, I'm Ben.

I'm a heady mix of a serious responsible grown up man and a stupid man-baby idiot with delusions of grandeur.

I'm a big nerd, really into music, cooking, books, films and scifi. I hate/love running and generally love being outdoors.

29 done. 'Summer course' my arse.

BUT! Although it was on grass and in spectacular driving rain, I managed to get round without stopping (which is a massive W for me) sometime around the 33 mark. I'll take it. I've definitely lost some oomph, but feel like I've hit the fitness 'trough' and am on the way back up.

Inevitably I now feel like I could solve all of the world's problems, become an astronaut and/or perform actual magic.

Go , people! It's awful, but it'll fix your stupid brains!

Friends, I'm gonna steal a page from @RickiTarr and ask a QUESTION. What's the best live music show you've been to? Or more accurately, what was your favorite?

I'll go first. For me it was Tears For Fears in 2014. I had just moved to Portland and Project Pabst was having its inaugural season in a hot sweaty gravel pit that was at once stifling and full of glorious potential. I was there mainly for Violent Femmes but I stayed for Tears For Fears because I remembered them mostly as a band my mom liked when she was somewhere around the age I was at the time (early 30s). I went in with zero expectations and was completely blown away. They played the hits without making them feel dated and new stuff without it feeling indulgent. They had enough of the original lineup to stay authentic but enough fresh blood to keep it interesting. I'm currently in a bar that serves strong drinks at a reasonable price and Everybody Wants To Rule The World started playing and brought me back to that amazing show.

So what show was it for you?

I saw Pearl Jam in '93 as one of my 'first gigs' then again last year in Hyde Park London and it was a sort of perfect gig. I'd seen them a couple of times in between but nothing like Hyde Park. Venue, people, weather, set - support was excellent aswell - Johnny Marr playing Smiths, Stereophonics (who I can take or leave but just knocked it out the park).

Whereas I'd see RHCP in Hyde Park in 2004 (who were excellent) then again last year and it was a really weird vibe and not that fun, but I mention it because in 2004 they were supported by JAMES BROWN, which was honestly quite discombobulating.

My sort of white whale was seeing Aphex Twin in '96 but although I like the bragging rights, I don't really remember much of it....

But.... If I'm really really honest, the first gig that comes to mind is Alice in Chains, Brixton Academy 1993. Layne Staley hanging off a giant net in his bug glasses. It was quite something to a starry-eyed, emotionally-wide young Ben.

Walking down into Shoreditch we walked through a deserted street with some mad shop windows. These can't be real, right? I'm assuming they were made up for a film or TV set?

@DemocracySpot The first thing my brain thought was that you were talking about this...

This is absolutely not an invitation for any kind of political debate, but was out today with my mate, who's in the process of becoming a Labour candidate for an area that I suspect may swing at some point (lot of lines being redrawn). She is an absolute force of nature and I love her very dearly. She's always been destined for greatness and I have no doubt in my mind you'll see her at PMQs at some point, tearing strips off some poor soul. But aside from all that we had a ridiculously lovely day with the fams.

TheBreadmonkey,
@TheBreadmonkey@beige.party avatar

@MaggieCi I only post this here because I know she won't see it. But she genuinely doesn't need any luck. From all the people I've known in my life (which has been long and rich and varied), she is the MOST person I've ever met. I've never known any person who cares as much as her. She leaves her front door unlocked at all times so people can visit whenever they want (which they frequently do, no matter who or the 'type' of person they are). She's the centre of any community she lives in. She's the sort of person you want in government. If half the people were half as good as her, the world would be a bright and beautiful place.

When I entertain I like to get things I know the guests will really like. Therefore I have just been to the cheese shop. I chose a bit willy-nilly and I didn’t have my glasses on so I couldn’t read the prices per kilo and when she rang up the total I kind of gulped. But she’d cut it all specially for me, so it was too late. I’m sure it will be delicious (it had f*cling better be!)

@purplepadma Love a bit of willy-nilly

TheBreadmonkey,

@purplepadma I absolutely love a bit of old English (I think I'm still accidentally things that sound like cheeses). For some reason I've started to really ham it up. I use the word chaps a LOT and am quite fond of a jolly good or a tremendous.

First run in a week. Another absolutely dreadful 5k. But as I always say.... Rubbish 5k better than no 5k. And I'm pretty sure once I've showered etc, I will feel pretty good for it. At the moment though, it doesn't feel like it touched the sides.

    When dogs hear other dogs howling and are compelled to join in, it is a bit like humans hearing other humans singing Bohemian Rhapsody.
