It's been a minute since I've done a music question, so here goes:

Who is an artist/band that you're annoyed you like?

Theblueone,
@Theblueone@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr U2. And begrudgingly, Kiss.

I am gonna take the, “did we even watch the same show as the ultra conservative and fascist people saying ‘Trek/Wars/Who has gone ‘woke’” even further, and go with there are pretty much three kinds of successful sci-fi serials:

~dystopian or subversive ones making pretty obvious commentary about fascism

-ones with some slight hope for the human future that have always made at least a little social commentary about how we could make things more egalitarian and open for POC, women, gay people, etc

~shitty space marines with generally poor writing that made ad revenue

And the first two flew over way too many chuckleheads’ noggins.

@piratero @mikecherry @hacks4pancakes Wasn't it published in the late 50s? How could it have been about Vietnam veterans?

I'm going to open up a discussion about how people actually live with Boundaries. This isn't a place to be judgemental about other people's choices, we all rationalize things, and make the best we can out of difficult circumstances.

Many of you know I care for my mother who is paraplegic, the level of care my husband and I give her is on the high end, it would be incredibly difficult for one person to do everything that would need to be done. This might sound ugly, but my mother was not a good mother, she frantically switched back and forth between helicopter parenting and outright neglect. She also doesn't think she has issues, and would never go to any therapy that wasn't "Christian" or take any kind of medication for mental health. I spent my childhood caring for her, my father and my siblings, and I still care for her. Understandably, people ask why, and it's a hard thing for me to answer. I do try very hard to set Boundaries with her now, but it probably isn't enough all the time, burn out is high for caregivers in the best of situations, and I can't pretend this is that. It feels like most of us compromise on something, especially with family.

So, what are your experiences with this kind of thing? What do you rationalize? What have you learned?
This is more about sharing personal experiences than to preach at people about their choices, so please keep that in mind when you reply.

Theblueone,
@Theblueone@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr ...have a hard time setting boundaries when so much feels like it's under your purview and stuff would collapse without you filling all the gaps...

Theblueone,
@Theblueone@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr Oh man that's rough…Haven't thought enough about boundaries or done the work.

Number of years back I managed my mom's hospice & being primary caregiver for two toddlers.

Then my wife took a fellowship in a different state & I had the kids solo for that year. Then covid hit, kids were home for that year.

Now my youngest has ADHD/extreme anxiety disorder & doesn't leave the house.

What was supposed to be a temporary situation of primary caregiving is now years long. Burnt out tbh

Okay, all Superheros are, at least, marginally problematic, but what Superhero do you think is the most problematic, and why?

Theblueone,
@Theblueone@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr Well, I know who the least problematic is…

I’m looking for a really great scales and arpeggios book for working on guitar. Does anyone have recommendations?

Theblueone,
@Theblueone@mastodon.social avatar

@GuitarSith @ambergrey Oh man...I remember that as the first book I had in the late 70s early 80s? I mean...I have fond memories of it, but I don't know if it's what I'd necessarily rec to someone today if you already have the basic mechanics down. I'd probably rec the Ted Greene stuff which is older but holds up...

I'm thinking of doing an early 80s style B&W print & mail 'zine about.... Small print runs, maybe one interview & one article per issue with whatever else catches my fancy. A couple of bucks for a subscription... Keep it real low-fi DIY but with good content. Mostly for fun and for the cool factor...

@TheMetalDog Oh man...Metal Church that year too. Armored Saint's debut. Dokken's 'Tooth & Nail'...Deep Purple's Perfect Strangers... Manowar's Hail To England, Exciter's "Violence and Force", VoiVoid's "War & Pain", and Slyer's "Haunting the Chapel"...and Van Halen's 1984 too

I was sixteen, just catching the metal bug two years prior, in a high school band with my buddy Ross, who would go on to be the front man/bass of death metal greats Immolation...

1984 was truly a magical metal year

Documentaries about pre -20th century wars always speak of long troop marches from here to there almost as minor details in the story. Those marches sometimes took many months (or years) and in some cases, many died on them.

The logistics of moving any large infantry are very complicated.
