By far my favourite bit of architectural ironwork in Glasgow, and possibly anywhere in the world! It can be found on D.B. Dobson's 1902 Art Nouveau commercial building at 50 Darnley Street in Glasgow.

Lopa has an ongoing feud with a pair of very inquisitive magpies. They stalk her in the garden, calling aggressively and try to mob her. This kind of behaviour is very common with magpies and foxes. They spat, but ultimately tolerate each other. http://www.permuted.org.uk/photography/fox-of-the-day/

For a time, during the late 1970s, I had a job leading parties of foreign visitors on tours of historic London pubs. One of my favourite stopping off points was the magnificent Art Nouveau Black Friar pub on Queen Victoria Street, which, back then, had only recently been saved from the threat of demolition. As jobs go, leading educational pub crawls was about as good as it gets.

a human-shaped stela with a necklace and a belt, carved in limestone. Found in Montagnac, . Dating 3200-2400 BC. In the late neolithic period several cultures living between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caucasus erected human-shaped stone sculptures showing clothing, weapons and jewellery. The stelae were symbols of power and status and were used for ancestor worship and rituals.

On display at Musée d'Histoire Naturelle, Nîmes

Callanish Stones for

This one in particular feels like a cross-section of wood - the layers of Lewissian Gneiss so distinct.

Feeling a kind of kinship with the Neolithic people who hefted this into place, 5000 years ago.

Another for : while I was there a skylark flew down and lit on a stone at Scotland's Tomnaverie stone circle. I was thrilled because Shelley's To a Skylark was one of my favorite poems when I was young but we don't have them in the States. I got to see and hear them plenty during my visit.

Off to Wiltshire and a Neolithic chambered tomb for today's

Devil's Den below Fyfield Down is a reconstructed chamber, originally it would have been covered by an earthen mound. It's a lovely walk here from Avebury or The Ridgeway, taking in the stone river of the Mother's Jam.

This visit May 2011.

Bus stops are the punctuation marks of life, the points at which you pause, draw breath, and see what comes around the corner. It might be the bus you want, it might be a new direction in life. The bus stop in this case was at the top of Oxford Street in Crookesmoor, Sheffield. The time was 1979.
