Writing quick one-off scrapers is one of my favourite applications of ChatGPT et al - here's a transcript from this morning where I wrote a quick script to turn an HTML table into newline-delimited JSON https://gist.github.com/simonw/ac671a9bdbda9f29dc5256511497bc1d

@simon @teleclimber All is as @ZachWeinersmith foretold: https://www.smbc-comics.com/index.php?db=comics&id=2362

Programs may have side effects, so running them is a bad way to tell if they work. And the Underhanded C Contest would like a word about "scan to see if it looks OK".

That aside, do you like being reduced to a code reviewer and error message copy-paster instead of writing code? Clearly you do, and I'm trying not to be a naysayer, but... it's not for me. But it seems like the industry will head that way anyway :(

aburka,
@aburka@hachyderm.io avatar

@simon I suppose you are constantly writing so much code that using the plagiarize-o-matic for some fiddly bits isn't a huge sacrifice, sure. I just hope we don't end up where it sure looks like we're going.

itsjustdj, to random

I got a new phone and after setting it up, I wiped the old one. Like you do.

Then I discovered that the Google Authenticator app loses all your codes when you move to a new device. Apparently I was supposed to have exported them.

Today's project: track down all the sites where I use Authenticator and create new codes.

Then export them for the future.

aburka,
@aburka@hachyderm.io avatar

@u0421793 @itsjustdj What's wrong with Authy? Is it doing something insecure to be able to back up the codes? In my case, the old phone died without warning so the auto restore feature was quite useful

Not exactly a hot take but wow what a cursed language is

From the comments:
It seems intval is interpreting valid numeric strings differently between PHP 5.6 and 7.0 on one hand, and PHP 7.1 on the other hand.
<?php
echo intval('1e5');
?>
will return 1 on PHP 5.6 and PHP 7.0,
but it will return 100000 on PHP 7.1.

@syntaxseed Fixed or broke? That's up to interpretation, but the documentation suggests the old behavior was intended :revblobfoxupsidedown:

aburka,

@evan I want to disagree, but then I'm thinking that if specification is documentation... and code is specification, then code is documentation -- and so I've got myself a bit of a contradiction

now you can use this locally instead of chatgpt to write code for you, if you're into that sort of thing

Things are getting pretty weird on . The person who started the instance decided to quit out of the blue (???) and I've seen some fediblocking going around due to server rules.

I have lots of sympathy for burnout of course, but I assume the stability/continuation of the instance is in question now.

Where are some good places to migrate?

aburka,
@aburka@hachyderm.io avatar

@jamigibbs To be honest, Nova has a pattern of making sudden announcements with no context (or heavily implied "if you need context read the threads which you have no way of finding")

aburka,
@aburka@hachyderm.io avatar

@jamigibbs And also yeah this isn't the first time there's been a wave of instances talking about blocking us for various reasons

aburka,
@aburka@hachyderm.io avatar

@j3j5 @drmorr I'm open to not leaving, but it seems like a good time to make backups at least. Migrations can also be undone (as we saw when Nova abruptly moved to a test instance and back during the Basement Era).

aburka,
@aburka@hachyderm.io avatar

@maegul @jamigibbs Last time I vaguely remember was when someone was talking about making a bot to index toots or profiles and hachyderm didn't immediately ban them?
