Welp, whatever version of Desktop I had installed on this Mac was no longer able to contact their servers. And the latest doesn't support High Sierra. Of course I can't upgrade because this is an Intel Mac. Time to boot over to Linux I guess.

aburka,
@aburka@hachyderm.io avatar

Aaaaaand they only support apt-based distros, cool cool cool

aburka,
@aburka@hachyderm.io avatar

@skyfaller I need a new distro after reluctantly concluding that my brain is not yet large enough to use Nix; Fedora is definitely on the shortlist

aburka,

@skyfaller do you use the new "atomic spins"? I'm trying to figure out what all the hype is about re those

Paxlovid is available for free but nobody knows about the program because it's some back office arrangement, like most of the American healthcare system.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/02/13/paxlovid-covid-cost-free-paxcess/

aburka,
@aburka@hachyderm.io avatar

@buermann @jonny This is valuable info but seemingly only covers the second half of the process. How do you get it prescribed? In my experience, doctors absolutely hate pax and don't want anyone to have it.

aburka,
@aburka@hachyderm.io avatar

@buermann @jonny Not in my case. They were just like "nah you're too young and there's a shortage [false] and it causes rebound [likely false], go away"

aburka,
@aburka@hachyderm.io avatar

@jonny @buermann Right. But they don't want to give you the choice. After I recovered my PCP said they should have prescribed, but I was like "okay... do you want to put that in writing?" She just told me to advocate harder. I don't know how to do that (especially when sick) except begging (tried that), sending scientific studies (tried) or threatening malpractice lawsuits (will try next time).

(ya I know I sound like a "they deny us eeeeearly treeeeeatment" ivermectin nutcase here...)

about the story of CN 3502, a diesel locomotive that traveled to a Canadian town cut off from services by snowstorms. They used a train to lift it off the tracks, drove it 1000 ft down the road (damaging both the road and the wheels) to city hall to use it as an emergency generator. It provided 375 kW which powered several buildings. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_National_3502

Saw a well-known fitness tech guy demonstrating wearing an Vision Pro headset while riding a bike on a trail, and (just as I discussed some days ago was a strong possibility when riding or driving, etc.) it suddenly went completely black for at least several seconds. Nobody hurt, but he was afterwards appropriately concerned.

aburka,
@aburka@hachyderm.io avatar

@lauren to save me watching the video, what was the point of wearing it on the trail? I thought that so far none of the AR features work while you're moving, unless it's very smooth like a plane?

Seems faintly ridiculous at first, but then again that's only 14 years away, and also I currently have a Y2k38 bug in my backlog at work (someone accidentally sets the clock forward 50 years and now I can't parse timestamps, oops (also, caching is hard so unfucking the clock didn't help, double oops))

re: the Flipper Zero, I never thought I'd say this but Canada should consider taking a leaf (hehe) out of England's book when it comes to criminal legislation.

we have minor offense called "going equipped for theft". essentially if you get stopped and search 'cos they think you're on the way to steal a car or break into somewhere, and you're found to have any of the typical tools of the trade (screwdriver, centerpunch, etc.) they can arrest you for it and keep you off the street for 24h.

(1/2)

aburka,
@aburka@hachyderm.io avatar

@gsuberland this is actually horrifying, basically precrime from Minority Report

aburka,
@aburka@hachyderm.io avatar

@gsuberland maybe it's because I'm American but the police being able to jail anyone they feel like for 24h just for having a screwdriver seems... bad, and "oh they don't charge you" doesn't help that much. You can lose a job by not showing up that one time
