It may not seem like it now, but during their time, the were a groundbreaking act. Their willingness to cover rock songs and contemporary material was antithetical to the bluegrass gatekeepers of the time.

They also kept their day jobs. "Seldom Scene" was coined because at first they only played once a week and didn’t stray too far from their Washington D.C. home base.

Their influence on later bands and newgrass in general is undeniable.

Everyone in Alaska has enjoyed a Universal Basic Income for over 40 years for just breathing in Alaska. Has it harmed them? No. Employment increased. Inflation slowed. Poverty went down. Obesity went down. Child abuse went down.

They basically used Thomas Paine's argument.

The recently released this 4/7/72 show recorded only months after Duane's death. So it's unique in that Dicky Betts is the sole guitarist. But it sounds great and I've never heard Berry Oakley's bass so high in the mix. You can really focus in on his playing and what made him so great.

The DEA is rescheduling marijuana from a Class I controlled substance to a Class III alongside ketamine and some anabolic steroids. This is huge and never thought I’d see this in my lifetime.

Practicing for tomorrow's acoustic set promising to stop torturing myself with .012s and switch to .011s, but after the next string change because I have a fresh set of .012 DR Veritas strings to put on after these ones wear out and these things cost money.

@dave_heumann @rowjimmy I just got back from Merlefest where I joined picking circles each night. My fingers are killing me and I can confirm that almost everyone in bluegrass uses .013s (as do I).

Thinking about bands that could fill the Sphere AND use it to its full potential, and I keep coming back to Tool being #1 on my wishlist.

@caravan @mrcompletely @Rosey Seconded! She tried so hard to still be relevant. Over-inflates herself time and time again, mostly by being a condescending ass to other people.

Give It Time is the love and light, surrender to the flow, uplifting anthem a certain other hamband songwriter I love has been trying to write for 15 years.

@Rosey Not familiar with the song. Link?

aburtch,

@Rosey Great song!

Why is it when Goose expresses those sentiments, it's cool and uplifting, but when Trey does, it's cheesy? They sound effortless and quite natural singing those lyrics.

aburtch,
@aburtch@triangletoot.party avatar

@mrcompletely @Rosey I like this thesis. The best songs are slightly abstract and allow you to hold the feeling in a way that’s unique to you. Overly specific or “on the nose” lyrics tend to spoil that feeling.

aburtch,
@aburtch@triangletoot.party avatar

@mrcompletely @Rosey Trey needs the other members of Phish as a balance. Left unchecked, he tends to the “first draft” love and light style you mention that we see frequently these days.

Very sad to hear about the death of Ben Eldridge, banjo player for the legendary act the Seldom Scene. Ben was a fierce picker and a gentleman, kind to everyone he met.

Here’s an excellent obit with a lot of historical background: https://bluegrasstoday.com/ben-eldridge-passes/

And here’s a Seldom Scene playlist so you can hear his mighty fine pickin’: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0NmyJ9h4R3BnXv5jjbQKv5?si=2QNKYA-5Q5q0T8Qzog4Z0w&pi=u-yDR9lkMHQaSr

@jeffowski I totally agree with the sentiment expressed in this post. However, I find it a bit confusing / inconsistent / hypocritical since so many of your posts rip religion as made up bullshit. So which is it?

“A death certificate would say he died of sepsis from a bone infection, but my friend and I have a term for the illness that killed him: end-stage poverty. We needed to coin a phrase because so many of our patients die of the same thing.”

Excellent essay by a US doctor describing how many of her patients suffer (and die) not from their illnesses but from the wildly precarious economics of their lives
