One of the biggest problems in business is “me-centric” talkers taking over and dominating meetings, especially open-ended brainstorming type meetings. If you lead meetings or brainstorming sessions, have plans in place to limit the ability of one or two people to derail the entire process. /rant

Thanks again for surfacing this. She's not wrong in calling out Beyoncé.

It is true she enlisted some incredible talent on the album and then drowned them out with pop sheen, "like a capitalist gesture to insert itself into that world.”

To which I say of course it was! She said herself it's “a ‘Beyoncé’ album, not a country album.” Her goal is to enhance the Beyoncé brand and make buckets of money.

aburtch,
@aburtch@triangletoot.party avatar

@Nolasox @maxellxlii90

Could she have been more magnanimous and showcased true black country? Sure, but that was never her intent. And two things can be true: She could have done a better job in that respect, AND even by doing this less than perfect album with capitalist intentions, it still calls attention to the fact that black women can be country.

aburtch,
@aburtch@triangletoot.party avatar

@Nolasox @maxellxlii90

Yasmin says “Beyoncé’s flagrant leaning on country aesthetics … suggests an artist conforming to the standards in order to cash in on the growing popularity of country music.” Again, what did you expect…it was a Beyoncé album. What Yasmin was hoping for was Beyoncé to do a Rhiannon Giddens album or a Rissi Palmer album, which is too much to ask for from the biggest black pop star in the world.

aburtch,
@aburtch@triangletoot.party avatar

@Nolasox @maxellxlii90

She goes on to criticize the lyrics for being “Hollywood’s version of the working person’s reality.” True, but at least Beyoncé is pulling from her own actual experience and not being inauthentic by making up sob stories she hasn’t lived. The album definitely would have benefited from “de-centering its superstar and letting the experts shine through” but that was never going to happen.

aburtch,
@aburtch@triangletoot.party avatar

@Nolasox @maxellxlii90

Even putting out the album she did, it made a statement. It’s getting radio airplay on country stations and shinging a light on the very real struggle of black musicians in the country genre.

I highly recommend listening to Rissi Palmer’s interview about the album on the Washington Post podcast: https://pca.st/09tb01zd

@Nolasox @maxellxlii90

Don't get me wrong, I'm not hating here, I love Yasmin and her music. I just think she wanted Beyoncé to make a Rissi Palmer album and that was never going to happen. It’s not what the Beyoncé brand does.

AND it was still a positive that Beyoncé said to the country music industry: “Screw you, I can do this too”

Appreciate you reading my screed.

And 💯 💯 💯 Post Malone + Miley Cyrus add absolutely nothing; to the album or whatever larger conversations Beyoncé was trying to have.

@maxellxlii90 @mrcompletely @Nolasox The Washington Post podcast I linked to said they reached out to Beyoncé for comment and didn’t receive a response. Other than that I haven’t seen anything, but I also have cut back on my news intake these days.

There was the much expected “who does she think she is” from a lot of the more vocal bro-country artists.

One of the most obvious tells in an written article is the overuse of the word “important." Everything is always "It's very important to..." “We must remember the importance of…"

That and the gobs and gobs of filler sentences that state the obvious or don't tell you anything new you didn't know. "Here we are going to discuss why [this] and the benefits of [that]…”

One of my favorite things about is that it's affordable. Almost all courses are in public parks and are free to play. And equipment is just a few discs that cost between $10-25 dollars each. You can get used discs even cheaper.

    @LeftistLawyer I agree it's all theater and Capitalist propaganda, but I'd hardly lay the blame with Hollywood and Madison Ave. They are symptoms, not the root cause. The real culprit is the 1% (& monopolists) doing everything they can to preserve their business models. The well being of humans and the planet be damned.

    It's getting worse because recent changes allowing unlimited money in politics and weakened anti-trust laws are eliminating any checks or balances on their power.

    aburtch,
    @aburtch@triangletoot.party avatar

    @LeftistLawyer I would argue that Hollywood and Madison Ave simply take the money the monopolists give them since their businesses also run on profit motive.

    A bipartisan panel of judges in North Carolina has ruled that the Republican-controlled state legislature improperly tried to seize control of state and local election boards – a consequential decision in a state that could emerge as a key battleground in November’s presidential election.
