Every Québec government reaches the hear/speak-no-evil & vacuous policies stage just before the electorate kick them to the curb. The CAQ’s uppance on housing has come, with that of language, education, and immigration in hot pursuit.

Daily Inspiration: "Retirement? It's no longer a number, it's a phase!" - Futurist Jim Carroll

Years ago - many years ago, it seems - I wrote this into an article:

"Are you ready for a world in which the concept of "retirement' has come to an end? If not, you'd better be, as this is likely to rapidly emerge as the most significant issue for every organization through the next ten years. That's because right now, we have a "perfect storm" brewing that involves three succinct but interrelated trends that will see the ongoing involvement in the workforce of people well past the age of 65."

In that context, yesterday was a pretty big and important milestone day for me!

According to the rules and norms of the 'olden days,' I should be fully retired as of this moment - after all, that's what you were expected to do! But retirement? That's not going to happen! Things have changed much in the past years, with the fact being that many seniors are of a mindset to keep on going with what they enjoy doing. Many are instead deciding to perhaps slowly wind down for a time rather than fitting into some hard, specific date.

With that in mind, here's the article I wrote back in 2004. It makes even more sense today!

The End of Retirement

@jimcarroll I’ve been thinking about this since my 30’s. I don’t want to do a job where the objective is to make enough money to quit. By and large, I have done that. This means, however, that I have to keep working until I leave this mortal coil. But I have fun!

For Sustainable Batteries, Just Add a Pinch of Salt - IEEE Spectrum

Why do we need built-in batteries in EVs, anyway? You might own your car, but you rent your battery, rather like a bottle deposit system. Service stations switch out a depleted battery for a freshly charged one. And batteries that are nearing end-of-service-life can be recycled by battery companies, the rare metals reprocessed, rather than discarded.

The US's first international intervention was the Barbary Wars. It was why the US even has a Navy. It is why we have the US Marines.

The US will keep continuing to bust shit up until the Houthis relent. FULL STOP.

As the Biden Admin prepares to potentially ban or restrict asylum, a reminder that asylum is legal immigration.

There's no "port of entry" requirement.
    There's no "visa" requirement.
    There's no "first country" requirement.
You enter the United States, and you apply for asylum.
Because asylum is legal immigration. Period.

    Period.

I opposed Trump's asylum ban. And I will oppose a Biden asylum ban. Because my standard is justice, not political expediency. Asylum Is A Human Right. Period.

    adamvs1,
    @adamvs1@mastodon.world avatar

@PadreWil @QasimRashid A substantial number of asylum seekers are fleeing situations(esp Middle East, Latin America, & Africa) that are a direct result of US/Western foreign policy. Propping up dictatorships, imposing various economic hardships, and now climate change.

See for example Musalo, Karen. "El Salvador: Root Causes and Just Asylum Policy Responses." Hastings Race & Poverty LJ 18 (2021): 178.

America's car culture is broken -- cyclists and pedestrians know this.

But what's not acknowledged often enough is just how broken it is for drivers

Our roads are deadlier than they have been at any point in the past ~20 years.

And the average price of a new car now exceeds $40,000.

It doesn't have to be this way!

Pretty much the rest of the world is embracing micro- and mini-mobility.

    Here's what that looks like.

North Americans(US & Can) have been neglecting infrastructure for over 40 years. Now, we have to fix roads, bridges, water & sewers, electrical grid, etc. Why not improve them?
We have the money/wealth/resources. It is a choice to live with poor infrastructure.

    adamvs1,
