What is instead of Climate Change we started calling it FUCKED UP WEATHER THING?

It's nearly May and it's only a few degrees above freezing in London. This shit ain't normal.

adrinux,

@JoeRess This is why many say 'climate crisis'. 'Change' is too benign.

I really love having to reboot my stock Pixel 7 to make Bluetooth audio work. Pause. Not.

@JoeRess though possibly the least shit option on mobile devices.

I avoid that particular problem by turning Bluetooth off to avoid shittier battery life...

TIL View allows you to view history and recently closed tabs but doesn't show recently closed windows.

So if you accidentally close a window full of tabs you need to use hamburger menu > history > recently closed windows to get them back.

The Samsung's new feature "Improve Quality" works really well for analog photo scans. I wish I had such a tool on my PC.
And yeah, it's me on the photo. 🙂

adrinux,

@sesivany I think you can get some of that from Upscayl https://www.upscayl.org/#download

Definitely has the slider, I've not tried pure sharpening without upscaling, but did get some half decent results on an old b&w photo of an old house.

I am not too familiar with the Ubuntu upgrade process, so I would appreciate some advice.

I want to install Ubuntu Sway, but it's based on Ubuntu 23.10. What will the next dist-upgrade be? 24.04? And how reliable is that process? My gut tells me never to upgrade an LTS, rather reinstall?

Thoughts?

Thank You

adrinux,
@adrinux@fosstodon.org avatar

@fatboy if you customise your desktop and have a bunch of PPA's installed each dist upgrade will turn them off and remove your customisations. Requiring hours of figuring out what it did and re-tweaking to your liking.

Apart from that they were usually plain sailing, never broke the system.

Note that my experience is 5 years out of date and I like a fairly vanilla Gnome desktop. YMMV

Interesting day...

I had a Debian 12 install booting in UEFI mode on my main laptop.
Thought I would test Ubuntu Sway on a Live USB, I booted into the Live USB in uefi mode and tested Ubuntu Sway only to find out my UEFI boot partition is broken after restart: "no bootable device found".

Just fucking lovely

adrinux,

@fatboy weird. You think it was the live usb or something you did?

https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2024/01/apple-announces-changes-to-ios-safari-and-the-app-store-in-the-european-union/

Or is Apple that petulant that it doesn’t care about others’ businesses as well?

adrinux,

@aardrian I wonder if connecting via a VPN in the EU would help...though you'd presumably have to dedicate a whole machine or at least a VM to it.

We are afraid that we have some bad news regarding extensions on GNOME 45.

https://news.itsfoss.com/gnome-45-extensions/

adrinux,
@adrinux@fosstodon.org avatar

@itsfoss Isn't this part of a general Javascript ecosystem push for better standards around JS modules?

You seem to imply this done out of Gnome devs dislike of extensions or to be deliberately hostile to users. But it's really about the Javascript community modernizing and standardising code.
In the long run that has to be better for extension developers and for the availability of extensions to end users, despite the short term pain.

I saw so many people with folding phones today that it has given me total tech envy.

My OnePlus 5T is approaching 6 years old. Has a replacement battery and flashed with Lineage in order to get modern features.

I'm fully aboard the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle train. So I'll wait until it gives up the ghost and then buy a 2nd hand fold.

Looks like only the Pixel has 3rd party ROMs. So that's another good excuse to wait.

But I want a new toy!

adrinux,
@adrinux@fosstodon.org avatar

@Edent my son's phone died, so I was able to pass on my 6 year old Samsung running Lineage 18 to him. Satisfied my desire for new with a 3 year old Sony that's now running Lineage 20. Children are handy sometimes 😀

I'm skeptical of a folding screen lasting for decent second hand use though.

For all the folks out there self hosting @wallabag - how big is your host/VM? How much RAM and disk does it need to comfortably run?

I'm thinking of giving it an 8G VM with 4 cores of CPU on a rather beefy Proxmox server, and using the docker-compose example. Sound like a good plan?

#selfhosting #docker #wallabag

adrinux,

@feoh @wallabag It's not that demanding - at least not with 1 user.

The thing to watch over time of you keep a lot of articles is the disk space.

Apple may have fixed some of it CSS display property bugs with tables:
https://bugs.webkit.org/show_bug.cgi?id=257458#c8

However, Safari Technology Preview 174 requires macOS 13+. My 2017 MacBook Air will not upgrade to macOS 13.

It seems the only way I can test Apple’s latest claim is to drop $1,000 USD.

M1 13-inch MacBook Air appears to be my cheapest option. Before I drop coin on this, anyone know if it is possible to force my 2017 device to macOS 13?

adrinux,
@adrinux@fosstodon.org avatar

@generic @aardrian the latest wheeze by is having rendering accelerated by Metal.

Have been using OSX in a Qemu VM on Linux for testing Safari for years, bit slow because Apple doesn't provide for graphics acceleration in VMs, but doable.

As of the latest Safari release web sites are now just blank white pages. 😬

We need ModernIE Style VMs for testing or Apple needs to put it's vast pile of cash into making Safari available on other platforms.

iPhone users: What's the equivalent of adb push Music /sdcard/ ?

As in, is it possible to upload several gigabytes of music to an iPhone and then listen to it with VLC (or similar)?

If so, how? Please don't tell me it involves the modern day equivalent of iTunes.

If you suggest something like Spotify we might fall out.

adrinux,
@adrinux@fosstodon.org avatar

@danirabbit @nicemicro @JoeRess us old people already owned a lot of music before streaming was a thing. I still think buying music is a better deal than renting access from a streaming service.

I'm also reading "Chokepoint Capitalism" and streaming services are a really bad deal for artists. Please don't use them.
