Hi, this is Andre. I'll be writing about software architecture and development, cyber security, UX/UI topics, politics, and queer experiences. I'm a classically trained musician and music composer, band director, and music instructor. I'm handfasted, have kids, and play and create (video) games. Sometimes I don't recognize social cues.

If your justification for the genocide of the Palestinian people is that what Israel’s doing is legal, may I remind you the Holocaust was legal too. Hitler was acting entirely within the laws of Nazi Germany while committing the genocide of the Jewish (and Roma, and gay, and disabled, …) people.

Legal does not mean moral, just, or right.

If something is legal but unjust, it is your moral duty to break the law.

No social progress has ever come about without moral people breaking unjust laws.

This coming Sunday, Mexico will have its first woman President -- a huge deal in a country where many women alive today were born without voting rights.

I think of my grandmother who is no longer around to witness it. She was the one who took me to political rallies and who made me run on my first and only ballot (for participatory budgeting, our neighbor group lost, lol).

News: “Storms are increasing in frequency and intensity, tornadoes are striking in areas not normally hit, people are dying.”
People: Climate change isn’t real.

People: “Jeez, everyone just seems sick all the time. My kids have been coughing since last year, I have this weird tingling in my hands for some reason, and I can’t remember shit.”
Same people: “Covid is just a cold. I’ve had it four times with no ill effects whatsoever.”

I probably get flooded by asking this but welp, here I go:

I'm looking for a good, visual (!) for that focuses on Codium, Firefox and other Open-Source tools. My specific interests are to learn , , and . Perhaps some minor , however I'd like to primarily work without it.

I'm a visual learner, extended theory in text won't help me at all. As language is visual to me, so is .

Anyone knows something that checks these boxes?

Council to phase out use on To Avoid Problems
The North Yorkshire Council in England announced it will ban apostrophes on street signs as it can affect geographical databases. Resident Anne Keywood told the BBC that she urged the authority to retain apostrophes, saying: "If you start losing things like that then everything goes downhill doesn't it?"

I know that ship has already sailed but it would have been nice if the spread operator on iterable did follow the semantic of iterator_to_array with the preserve keys argument being true

Using Python 3.11 or higher, I want to create an output file and add a line describing it to a log file as an atomic operation: either the output file is created and the log entry is added, or neither happens. fcntl.flock() is only advisory - will something else give me stronger guarantees, preferably on all three major OSes? #python #file-lock #atomic-operation #question

gvwilson,
@gvwilson@mastodon.social avatar

The answer appears to be "you can't do that with a standard Unix filesystem". Several people have suggested alternative filesystems (which my learners almost certainly won't have) or using a transactional database, except everything else in the application wants plain old files on disk. Which brings me to another question: how do version control systems like Git handle this? They (appear to) need atomic multi-file transactions - do they just flock() and hope for the best?
