There was frost on the ground when we left out this morning and now it feels like high summer. Orange tip on a periwinkle.

"The hermit crab is not, in fact, hermetical: they're sociable, often climbing on top of one another to sleep in a great pile. When a crab comes across a new shell that turns out to be too big, it waits nearby until another crab comes to inspect it. If it's too small for a second crab, they hold claws and form a queue until a crab who fits it arrives, then the next crab in line claims the newly-housed crab's shell ... "

This rather confirmed my suspicions that most people are broadly in favour of traffic calming measures, but a small minority are very vocally opposed to on social media and they're the voices that get heard by this government

#CarrieNewcomer on #light from the #eclipse.

"We know in our minds and in our bodies what morning light is, how it feels, what time of year. We know when we walk outside that it is twilight or that the sun must be slipping below the horizon. Our hearts and minds have filed away so many kinds of light and something inside us says, ”Oh, this is evening in winter, or morning in summer”. But my mind or body had absolutely no reference point for this kind of light."

Conducted a survey (n=1700) in Finland about people who cycle (also) in the winter. I translated some of the key findings below. For example the differnce in sick leave days is very, very significant 🧵 1/

afewbugs,
@afewbugs@social.coop avatar

@quixoticgeek @pekkatahkola surely there's a correlation doesn't equal causation issue there though? Maybe healthier people who take fewer sick days are more able to keep cycling through winter, rather than cycling through winter makes people healthier

I sometimes wonder if most of the Fediverse is actually cyclists, or it's sampling bias because those were the accounts I followed first when I signed up, and then I followed the accounts they boosted. I guess the decentralised nature of the place means no one will ever actually know because you can't survey everyone.

afewbugs,
@afewbugs@social.coop avatar

Then again half the Fediverse seems to be catgirl software engineers and I didn't deliberately follow them on that basis so maybe I do see a representative sample?

afewbugs,
@afewbugs@social.coop avatar

@NatureMC I do find it fascinating that there is absolutely no way of testing this, that by design there's no way of surveying the entire Fediverse. Even a hashtag search for dream cars might not give me the correct result because if there are a lot of people talking about it out there maybe I wouldn't see them because my server doesn't federate with theirs?

afewbugs,
@afewbugs@social.coop avatar

@NatureMC believe it or not I only get one hit for dream car. So either there's not much out there or I can't see it

"Electric vehicles as a whole displaced about 1.5m barrels of oil a day globally in 2022, according to Bloomberg. Two-thirds of that – almost 1m barrels a day – was just from electric bikes and mopeds, which are known as electric micromobility."

Plants are inherently anti the zero-sum scarcity paradigm aren't they. If you give someone a cutting of your plant you still have a plant but now they have one too. They can grow it till they can give away cuttings and now more people have plants, and your plant is still there.

I suspect part of the reason took off in Paris but have spawned conspiracy theories in the UK is that invested in the benefits alongside the traffic calming measures, whereas UK councils had no budget to invest in the positives and also no budget for proper public consolations explaining what was going to happen so people felt it had just been dropped on them without warning.

https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2024/apr/06/why-has-15-minute-city-taken-off-paris-toxic-idea-uk-carlos-moreno

afewbugs,
@afewbugs@social.coop avatar

says: “We don’t have the conspiracy mongers, because it is impossible to say in Paris that Moreno wants to create a new Paris lockdown.... because we live in Paris, I can invite guests to visit me and they see this is impossible.

... The opposition in Paris is not the same that you have in the UK, because nobody can say in Paris we want to create an open jail – this is evident that it is not the case. We have beautiful new green spaces and areas to live.”

afewbugs,
@afewbugs@social.coop avatar

His theory of how cities were designed in the car era makes a lot of sense, separated into living/working, living in turn segregated by income and work segregated by activity.
I've ordered his book (https://www.moreno-web.net/new-book-the-15-minute-city-a-solution-to-saving-our-time-and-our-planet/) - shoutout to in - https://bookbag.shop/

afewbugs,
@afewbugs@social.coop avatar

"Moreno thinks this segregation leads to a poorer quality of life, one designed around outdated “masculine desires”, so his proposal is to mix this up, creating housing developments with a mixture of social, affordable and more expensive housing so different social strata can intermingle. He also wants to bring schools and children’s areas closer to work and home, so caregivers can more easily travel around and participate in society."

afewbugs,
@afewbugs@social.coop avatar

"He also thinks office should generally be closer to homes, as well as cultural venues, doctors, shops and other amenities. Shared spaces such as parks help the people living in the areas to form communities.

Wondering about recording all the food we eat that we have grown, foraged or harvested ourselves.
I did it a couple of years ago and found it was good to see how much we did provide for ourselves & was sometimes a reminder to check the freezer.

@Hellybootwader @Pollinators I heard that the bred in bread and cheese referred to the leaves and the cheese referred to the haws, although the leaves would probably be a bit bitter to eat by the time the haws were ready
